  • Great coffee maker with a couple issues
Overall this is a solid coffee maker. We noticed a marked improvement in the coffee since using it. We got it to replace old Keurig and wanted to up our coffee game with better brewer along with a burr grinder. Also, really liked the single/small pot feature to compliment the full pot. I would like to give it 5 stars because we generally really like it except that it has some really annoying issues that make you go hmmm. 1) When we brew in the carafe mode, the coffee drips from multiple spots on the spring hinge and not just the intended hole. This leads to coffee collecting around the rim of the carafe. Luckily, it hasn't overflowed to the counter but the coffee slowly makes it way into the carafe through the spout opening. When done, I unscrew the lid and the rest ends up in the pot. Just never know if this will lead to a complete overflow condition or not. I've used paper filters, reusable metal filters, adjusted grind size, clean it to ensure the brew path doesn't have any coffee ground blocking the tiny holes. Also, I noted the lid seems to bubble out coffee during the brew process which doesn't seem normal. Maybe my carafe lid has an issue too. 2) I used the exact amount of coffee and water recommended in the OXO manual (56g to 40 oz) to make a full carafe. This is a lower amount of coffee than the golden ratio. It always results in the coffee getting all over the shower head. Seems like this is a bad design - like the brewer should be deeper to allow for the coffee bloom. This happens with both paper filters and the reusable metal filter and at all the grind sizes we've used. We generally grind to a medium setting on our Baratza Encore from high teens to low 20s. Again, we really enjoy the coffee brewed with this OXO 8 cup. I consider the above as a nuisance or maybe a notch above that so wouldn't reduce the rating further at this point. I've contacted OXO about the issues I'm experiencing as these are things that should happen with a brewer at this price point. Follow up: OXO quickly sent replacement parts. Not sure I see anything different but the issues have not happened again so far. ... show more

  • Solid Coffee Maker with a Couple of Minor Issues
In an effort to find the perfect cup of coffee, I decided to retire my Cuisinart Grind & Brew 10-Cup Coffee Maker and buy the OXO Brew 8-Cup Coffee Maker. I really liked my Cuisinart; it’s been a workhorse for many years. I stopped using the built in grinder, it's terrible, moisture gets into the grinder, clogs it up and it’s a disaster. This time around I bought a separate grinder, an OXO and I’ll review that later. I did the research, read reviews and watched videos; the OXO seemed like a great product, its SCA certified and priced well. Of course, $200.00 is at the high end but my old Cuisinart was at the high end too. Out of the box the OXO is perfect; it’s a great looking machine, well made and easy to use. I read all the set-up instructions and was ready to brew. I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison, so I set up my Cuisinart and the OXO to brew a 4-cup pot using the same coffee to water ratios. Here’s what I found: Set-up both were the same, very easy but notice the OXO pot dribbled a lot when pouring water into the reservoir. I’d recommend buying a small pitcher just to full the reservoir. Brew times were drastically different. The OXO was 4.30 minutes and the Cuisinart 6.17. Not a huge deal considering if you really need a cup of coffee in a hurry both pots can be removed while brewing but both emit a few drops of coffee when the carafe is removed. The big difference was the temperature and taste. The Cuisinart brewed a warm cup of coffee, but the OXO brewed a hot cup of coffee. The brew temperature is very important so when I tasted both cups of coffee there was a huge difference. The Cuisinart was good but very bitter; I can’t believe I’ve been drinking bitter for all this time compared to the smooth rich flavor of the OXO brew. I’m guessing the taste had a lot to do with the OXO integrated bloom cycle which allows for optimal flavor extraction, the higher water temperature and the Rainmaker shower head that distributes the water more evenly. Another big difference was the second cup. The OXO remained hot in the pot and tasted as good as the first. Both makers had a significant drop in temperature after the third cup, so I’m not impressed with either thermal carafes. I’d recommend the OXO over the Cuisinart. Neither is perfect but the OXO does make a great tasting cup of coffee. ... show more

  • My best coffee maker, so far
I'm serious about my coffee. But, not to an extreme... My local city water is high in dissolved solids, and eventually ruins my coffee maker. Even using a well-regarded filtering product...I replace my coffee maker every 3 or 4 years. Because of it. So, while looking for my latest replacement, this is the one I chose. I read all the reviews, positive and negative. Whether they were sincere, or just meant to discredit a competitor, I'm happy with my choice. I can't account for people that don't get their coffee grinds inside the paper filter. Or, they want their coffee as hot as the sun. Or, there isn't a clock, so they can setup the coffee maker the night before. Then, you might consider something else. I personally have a burr coffee grinder, to use in the morning. When I really I need that first cup. So, I did a comparison test between a single 15 oz (yes, for whatever reason, the 3 cup mark on the water tank equals 15 oz) serving. The first time I used the regular basket, 2-4 cup setting. For the brew cycle. It was delicious. Some high notes of flavor, and all-around satisfying. The second time I used the smaller basket insert, and brewed directly into my mug. It was not the same. Although I used the same amount of coffee, it had a deeper and more rich flavor. But, it lacked the high notes, for whatever reason. I'm not complaining. It actually presents two different options, depending on my mood, as to what I might like at the time. I don't expect to be brewing a complete pot of coffee everyday. So, I can't speak to that. But, in my experience, I think the flat bottom basket/filter combined with the the shower head dispersion of water is better than a cone shape. It just makes sense to me... Regardless, I'm very happy with this coffee maker. ... show more
