  • Replacement was unplayable
Legere has a generous return policy. If the reed you try is too hard/soft, you may return it for a replacement of another hardness. The reed I got was not super easy to play. It didn't give me the articulation I was used to. I've been playing sax for over 20 years so I know how a good reed should feel and work. My Legere on my tenor is wonderful! So I returned it using their formal process (send the reed in an envelope directly to them) and they sent me a replacement that was softer, as requested. Great!! A+ I carefully opened the package and noticed that the reed tip was bent. I tried to straighten it, but being plastic, it held the crease and is unplayable. :( They only allow one return/swap. It went from not super playable with the first reed to absolutely unplayable with the second. Very disappointed. The reason I went for this reed was because I had a 5-star experience with the same reed on my tenor. LOVE it!!! Sounds great with smooth tone across the full range. Easy to hit altissimo notes and full bodied at the bottom. Great tone in the middle. I was sold. But this alto reed experience was sub-par. If it were $10 or less, I would not complain so much. ... show more

  • Great Reed, Wrong strength
I've been using Legere Signature alto sex reeds for 6 years now and won't go back to cane reeds. My order with Amazon was for a 2.25 strength reed, but received a 2.5 which is too stiff for my mouth piece, so I returned it. Since they don't stock a 2.25 strength Legere ( which 7 of my fellow sax players also use) I had to go to Woodwind Brasswind for the 2.25. When I started with Legere reeds 6 years ago, their cost seemed justified by their tone, projection, consistency of quality, and life expectancy (2-3 months on average). Recently I have found some of them losing tone and vitality after 3-4 weeks, and the $30 per reed cost doesn't seem justified any more. Rather than buying a box of 10 cane reeds, and throwing half of them away, however, I will foot the bill and continue to use Legere Signature alto sax reeds. I just wish Amazon. com would stock the 2.25 strength I want. ... show more

  • Thoughts from a lifelong professional saxophonist...
I am a retired music educator, playing alto and soprano sax in five bands, including a marvelous professional concert band, two big bands, worship band and a ‘60’s-rock combo. Over many years, I’ve used Java 3 and Hemke 2.5 or 3 reeds on my Selmer Mark VI alto (Meyer and Concept mouthpieces and Versa ligature). Concerned by inconsistent cane reeds, even with ReedGeek usage, and noting a trend among my concert band colleagues toward Legere Signature reeds, I tried one in strength #2.5. I may never again go back to cane reeds!! Incredibly, I’ve been playing on that same alto reed EXCLUSIVELY for the past seven months! I have noticed no changes in the reed’s sound, stability or performance at all! The tone and response is, I feel, equal to my best cane reeds and when doubling, they are instantly ready to play. Always the same, every time! I would definitely recommend that every serious sax or clarinet player at least TRY a Legere Signature reed and decide for yourself. Why insist on being a “cane reed purist” when this could be the reed you have been searching for? The only drawbacks I have found involve their steep price, poor packaging, allegedly selling used as new, and, being rather transparent, the disconcerting view of water droplets showing through the reed. ... show more

  • so I like loud and bright sound
I've been playing on Vandoren V16 2.5 reeds on my Selmer MKVII and Vandoren Java A45 alto setup for more than 20 years. I've tried all of the synthetic reeds over the years, and none of them gave me the projection, tone, and control that a cane reed did. They always seemed to have issues in Altissimo or in the low range, or both. They also always had a duller sound. I'm in a rock band, and I'm competing with distorted guitars, so I like loud and bright sound. This is the first synthetic to accomplish this. Rico plasticover did well too, but they were cane with a coating. For me, the 2.5 reed strength lined up very well with the Vandoren V16 2.5 reeds. Nice job Legere! I'll definitely buy another if it lasts a long as a box of V16s. ... show more

  • Consistent but not at warm. Great for Altisimo!
Over all: The quality of the product is excellent. Consideration for where the reed will exists if not mounted on the mouthpiece left me puzzled. There is no protective case or holder for a single reed with a price point of ~ $24.00. The reed does fit securely with most reed holders and I have several...it slides out! The length is shorter than the all wood reeds I've had previously. No protective cases were advertised on their website. At least I didn't see any. Playability: It's a bit dull for the lower register (I used a Jodi Jazz 6 mouthpiece on a Cannonbal Sceptur). However, major contrast for the upper octaves. Put it this way, you'll be able to fly high with great intonation! Alternate fingerings were more consistent, some required a bit of pushing though. It may play a lot differently on a metal setup. I have to get to that later on. For now, I'll keep it but likely use a larger mouthpiece (7 tip opening). ... show more

  • Reliable for everyday practice.
I've been using Legere 2.25 Signature Alto Sax reeds for a couple years now. 2.75 is too hard for me. But I just got a 2.5 today and I love it! My only criticism of Legeres in general is they do split and crack more quickly than I expected. They're still playable but I don't like seeing splits! They don't sound as good as a really nice came reed but they're good enough for everyday practice. Not so great for upper overtones and altissimo though. ... show more

  • Not sure about these for sax...
I've been using one of these for clarinet and had no problems but after a week on our alto sax, well, see the picture above. It still works but as you can imagine, the sound quality has gotten pretty harsh at times. My son and I are beginner sax players but we both play clarinet and know how to take care of reeds. So perhaps the wider sax reeds are more prone to this? For now, this is sending me back to 'reed' reeds. That said, I LOVE not having to warm these up, keep them moist, etc. So still giving it 4 stars! ... show more

  • Durable, but more stiff than standard reeds.
This reed seems as though it will last a long time. Since it is synthetic, it doesn't require any moistening before using. Be sure you select a reed one half size lower than you're accustomed to though as these synthetic reeds tend to be a bit more stiff. The sound and tone are very nice.
