  • Worked great!
This worked great removing and replacing the valves on my 7.3 diesel. If it worked on this it should work on pretty much any engine, as these springs are around 300lb of pressure when compressed. Once you have the spring compressed, just give the top a good whack to free up the sticking valve keepers. I had the heads on my bench, so I stuck a rag underneath to keep the valves pressed against the seats so I could get the keepers out. ... show more

  • Simple to remove a valve spring on the vehicle
This tool is a good deal for it's low price. It gets the job done. The hooks are staggered just right and have enough of a bend to them to where they really grip the spring and turning the star wheel to compress the spring doesn't take that much force. You could spend twice as much on a valve spring puller but this low cost model works just fine. ... show more

  • Good quality, but didn't fit onto the springs on smaller engines.
I was doing a valve job on a 1999 Chrysler Cirrus, 2.5L, 24 valve SOHC. Wouldn't work on the springs because the gripper feet were too thick. It's a quality tool and I'm sure it would work great with bigger springs, but I wouldn't recommend for smaller engines. NOTE - The 4 star rating is only because it didn't work for me and the listing didn't have any indications on the size - It's not a reflection of the quality of the tool. ... show more

  • Well made & works great!
I just got the OTC 4573 delivered from amazon yesterday afternoon & have already used it to remove & install the valves in a 1999 Ford Ranger V6. It works great & I have had no clearance issues or any other problems. Once you attach the compressor to the top of the valve spring, the entire process takes approximately 1 minute to compress the spring, remove the keepers, and release the tension from the spring & remove the compressor. This tool is MUCH higher quality than I was expecting & I am once again happy with my choice to purchase an OTC brand tool via amazon. This is a much better quality tool than you will be able to purchase at your local "chain auto store". Unless you are seriously pressed for time, buy the OTC 4573 & wait a couple days for shipping. *** One tip I can give you for longevity of this tool: Make sure you "unscrew" the bolt completely, lube it up with thick grease (i.e. wheel bearing grease) & re-install. It only comes prepackaged with a thin coating of oil, and that will disappear overtime & the threads will wear out quickly once there is no longer lubrication on them. *** WoodstockVA ... show more

  • Did the job.
Had to check intake and exhaust seals on one cylinder. This was hard to get enough clearance to remove the valve retainers but I did finally get the job done. Glad I didn't have to do all the valves.

  • Worked but painful to use
Twelve valves later, even wearing welding gloves, my hands are wrecked. A T-handle type would be better. This one did get all 12 done, but I'll get something else if I ever do another valve job.

  • Well constructed, works easily
As to the other reviewer's comment that it "tenderized his hand" I do not necessarily agree after using it myself. It was easy to use and did not hurt. That said, I think it really depends on how beefcake your springs are. If you're taking off 40 year old stock springs then it's easy. If you have springs that are holding down a radical hydraulic roller cam, then maybe you're going to struggle. I was trying to decide whether or not to buy this or the large clamp type OTC product. I decided to get this because it was less expensive. I heartily recommend this to anyone who is working on their own personal project. 5/23/2015 Update: I bought the Pro-Form lever action type spring compressor. It is much faster than this. If you're on a tight budget, this will do the job well, but if you can afford it, the Pro-Form lever action will save you a lot of time. ... show more
