  • The best motion picture of 2023 IMO on pristine 4K disc
I own all of the films Christopher Nolan has directed and have seen each one more than once. So, it seemed that what is basically a biopic would be something he wouldn’t be interested in. Of course, he picked a man who isn’t well known by most people today. Although I’m old enough to know who J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy, “A Quiet Place Part II”) was, I didn’t know much beyond that he is the acknowledged scientist responsible for developing the atomic bomb that was dropped twice on Japan and the conclusion of World War II. While Nolan and his co-writers Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin provide a brief look at Oppenheimer's upbringing and days as a student, the meat of the film is after his selection to run the Manhattan Project beginning in the early 1940’s after the U. S. entered the war. What everyone knew was that the science of the day was capable of developing a huge advantage in warfare with a really big bomb. As played out in the film, Oppenheimer had concerns from the beginning. He agreed to head the project primarily because he knew that if Hitler got the bomb first, he would have no compunction about using it. In order to gather the best scientists, he and his Army General overseer, Leslie Groves (Matt Damon, “Air”), would use their heritage as a deciding factor. Most of the top physicists were Jewish. In spite of Oppenheimer’s awkwardness at times, he was also something of a ladies' man. In particular, he has an off and on relationship with Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh, “Don’t Worry Darling”) that gets quite physical on screen. She becomes something of a thorn in his side throughout the movie because she was a card-carrying Communist. As much as the American government wanted to thwart Germany and Japan, they were equally concerned about the growing influence of Stalin and Russia who were in fact allies at the time. Eventually Oppenheimer will marry Katherine “Kitty” Puening played by Emily Blunt who starred with Murphy in “A Quiet Place Part II.” Blunt doesn’t get a lot of screen time but when she does, she’s very effective. Something of a boozer, Kitty will ultimately be her husband’s strongest defender. A great scene when she testifies for Oppenheimer at a security hearing headed by Roger Robb (Jason Clarke, “The Desperate Hour”). The movie runs 3 hours long, so there are a lot of characters introduced and a lot going on before even the first bomb (“Trinity”) is tested. One character in particular has a major role and is someone I had never heard about. Lewis Strauss (a nearly unrecognizable Robert Downey Jr., “Avengers: Endgame”) was the head of a prestigious college who was trying to hire Oppenheimer. He was a businessman, a retired naval officer and ultimately the head of the Atomic Energy Commission after the war. His real ambition however was to be in the President’s cabinet. He along with Edward Teller (Benny Safdie, “Licorice Pizza”) wanted to push the development of the hydrogen bomb, more powerful than the A-bomb. But after the destruction of Japan, Oppenheimer was against it. Strauss used his influence to sabotage Oppenheimer’s security clearance as he was obviously still quite influential in the country. A brief and uncomfortable meeting with President Truman (a definitely unrecognizable Gary Oldman, “The Woman in the Window”), Oppenheimer’s future with the U. S. government became clear. Nolan is a master of confusion in that he can keep you interested in what is going on even if you aren’t sure what is. He almost always uses time shifting scenes which sometimes helps or at least provides some context. This film is fairly cut and dried from a technical standpoint, other than some scientific gobbledygook. The film does jump around a bit but it’s never disconcerting. One case is the security meeting. The other is the testimony before Congress. Both of those events are interspersed and shown in black and white. Yes, there are big bombs exploding, primarily the “Trinity” test which is very effective. We also get some razzle dazzle early in the film providing a non-scientific look at physical science. Nolan and his cinematographer do a great job moving the camera. In particular the close ups of Oppenheimer’s face with those piercing blue eyes give the viewer a look into his thoughts. There are numerous well-known actors who show up in the movie. Too many to mention here. Every actor is terrific, but I’ll make special mention of Murphy in the key role. Since “A Quiet Place Part II” he’s done a short, a TV series, a video game and a voice over. Things are about to change. Maybe an Oscar. I was also impressed with Downey, Jr. Put him down for a Supporting Oscar and maybe Blunt and/or Pugh for Supporting Actress. This is a great film, probably my favorite of the year so far. • The Mere Beginning of, "The Story of Our Time"
I want to emphasize that the quality of this picture is first-rate throughout. I additionally wish to declare that a dramatization of the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer in and of itself, is not equivalent to "The [Entire] Story of Our Time," however - the phrase of which is associated with one of the bonus features included with this purchase. "The [Elaborate] Story of Our Time", involves the existence of one sub-Rosa transnational Fourth Reich Deep National Security State Illegal Secret Government, of which has been disclosed by numerous individuals. I believe it is prudent to express how each one of us, as sentient manifestations in consciousness, plays an imperative role within establishing a collective framework of what people recognize and / or experience, as reality. The following statements are attributed to the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) and the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL): "Inspired by a profound experience of personal discovery, Apollo 14 astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell created IONS in 1973 to explore the interplay between scientific knowledge and inner knowing. Today, IONS has the world’s largest team of multidisciplinary scientists conducting research on frontier topics in consciousness and its impact in our lives." "The International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL) is a consortium of individuals from all walks of life, united within a shared passion: understanding consciousness for a better tomorrow." STAR, LLC has implemented various copyrighted research, including a comprehensive explanation of reality, within their 8-slide presentation, "Cosmos: The Holographic Conscious Universe". Author Paola Leopizzi Harris first released the relevant publication, "Trinity: The Best-Kept Secret – Meticulous Research Reveals How 'Alien' Technology Has Been Concealed" with coauthor Jacques F. Vallée in 2021, the title of which correlates with the founding atomic weapon test, in the Tularosa Basin of White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico on July 16, 1945, disclosed within this film. J. Robert Oppenheimer's attributed citation of the phrase, "Now I am become Death, The Destroyer of Worlds." from the Bhagavad Gita in 1945, is critical. Earth has experienced steadily increased interest from enlightened extraterrestrial civilizations since the time of the Trinity test, due to the destructive nature nuclear weapons invoke upon higher dimensionality within a veiled construct of quantum physics – the reality of which has been withheld by rogue operatives within a transnational Military Industrial Complex, intent on maintaining an archaic petrodollar-based geopolitical structure, that has brought our civilization and planet towards the brink of biosphere collapse within unnecessary climate and energy crises and various other atrocities. For this reason, authentic Extraterrestrial Vehicles (ETVs) have shown interest at times around incorporated nuclear weapons facilities; yet in no way, do these visitors pose as "threat(s)"! It is therefore important to learn to recognize the need to incorporate acute discernment, in our naivety… we cannot necessarily trust corporate mainstream media outlets, because of Intelligence Community infiltration. In truth, a psychological warfare program was unleashed in the late 1940s / early 1950s, based upon the corrupt desires of the Military Industrial Complex, against enlightened extraterrestrial civilizations; this is why almost all "national security" interests / corporate mainstream media representations of extraterrestrials have and continue to condition homo sapiens (humanity, who share 98.8% of DNA with chimpanzees, who are known to form groups in warring against one another) to "fear the unknown" / all things "alien" within what is referred to as deceptive Indication & Warning(s) {I & W [False Flag (Military terminology)]} scenarios. Transcendental meditation, as utilized within various pursuits including but not limited to prayer, utilizes higher capacities of the sentient mind, which have historically been miscategorized as the stuff of science fiction, or that of which may merely be available to a few gifted "psychics". Please witness the following, eluding to the reality of quantum physics: "When a thought of war comes, oppose it by a stronger thought of peace. A thought of hatred must be destroyed by a more powerful thought of love… If you desire with all your heart, friendship with every race on earth, your thought, spiritual and positive, will spread; it will become the desire of others, growing stronger and stronger, until it reaches the minds of all men…" Excerpted from the compilation "Paris Talks"; "The Pitiful Causes of War, and the Duty of Everyone to Strive for Peace" – 'Abdu'l-Bahá, October 21st, 1911 Additional resources include but are not limited to the following: Secrets of Power, Volume I - The Individual Empowerment vs. The Societal Panorama of Power and Depowerment, by Ingo Swann Secrets of Power, Volume II - The Vitalizing of Individual Powers, by Ingo Swann Phenomena - The Secret History of the U. • Brilliant!
Although I am a born-again liberal, I have always found the history of The Manhattan Project totally fascinating. It was so top secret that the newly sworn-in President, Harry Truman, did not know of the project until 24 hours after he became the Commander-in-Chief. The film version of Oppenheimer is based upon a superb biography by Kai Bird. The adapted screenplay should have won the Oscar, but the film was not short changed. It won seven Oscars. And, it deserved even more. It is one of the greatest film biographies ever made. The acting, directing, cinematography, special effects, music and every other element of the film is simply astonishing. People ask why we do not have great classic films (e.g., Patton, Lawrence of Arabia) any longer. The truth is that we truly do have some great films coming out of Hollywood. Two of the great films of 2023, Maestro and Oppenheimer, are biographical films that soar to great heights. Oppenheimer is a three-hour film that never lags and is never boring. It is amazingly directed. I will watch this treasured film many times in the future. I thank Amazon for making it available in several formats and in such excellent transfer to both DVD and Blu-ray. One word describes Oppenheimer, the film. BRILLIANT! ... show more

  • Great movie, and absolutely horrifying
I've always been a science nerd, so when I found out that not only would there be another A-Bomb movie, it would be done by a great director and feature great music. Then, when I saw it, I was really shocked at the attention given to the emotional and mental state of the main character. This was the genius of this movie...anyone could make a documentary, but it took Nolan to make it an exploration of good vs evil vs duty vs desire. Would 100% recommend for anyone. ... show more
