Description

ONE OF ESQUIRE'S BEST SCI-FI BOOKS OF 2024 Bethany Jacobs returns with On Vicious Worlds, the electrifying sequel to These Burning Stars, the Philip K. Dick Award–winning space opera novel about revenge, power, and the price of legacy. The Jeveni have found a fragile sense of peace on the ice planet of Capamame, far from the Kindom’s domineering control. There, Jun Ironway and Masar Hawks are tasked with the impossible: protecting their colony from a faceless saboteur who is hell-bent on spreading mayhem and murder through the colony. Meanwhile, stoic Cleric Chono and Six, the wild manipulator responsible for outwitting the Nightfoot family, struggle to stay one step ahead of their enemies. A collision is on the horizon. One that could ignite the spark of revolution. And over it all hangs the cruel legacy of Esek Nightfoot. A legacy that may prove impossible to escape. . . . Praise for These Burning Stars: ★ “An intricate plot for revenge drives this far-future SF political thriller. An exciting start from a fresh talent.”―Kirkus (Starred Review) ★ "Readers who love smart thrillers and explosive science fiction won’t want to miss this book."―Booklist (Starred Review) ★ "A devilishly fun thrill ride ... These Burning Stars is plotted like a chess match, confident and surprising as Jacobs moves each piece thoughtfully across her board."―BookPage (Starred Review) Read more

  • Masterful storytelling
I love Jacobs’ storytelling. She completely invests you in the characters so you feel each and every blow. There are many hand to hand or virtual casting battles and some fairly hot love scenes. Highly recommended writer and I can wait for the next book.

  • Fantasy mystery-thriller
Not as amazing as the first book but still a compelling read.

  • This is a page turner... The best kind of book!
Brilliant author and what a great follow-up book to her Philip K Dick winner. These 2 books are amazing and highly recommended. Be prepared for a fantastic ride. I am really excited for the conclusion of the trilogy this fall. I'll probably have it the first day it's available.

  • Needed Editing
This is a great story, but it could have used a little editing. The story meanders with repetitive conversations and many, many fight scenes. The world building, however, is amazing, the characters interesting and the plot engrossing (though sometimes heavy on coincidences).

  • fantastic second book in this series
This story continues to be epic worthy. We left off with our cast of misfits rescuing an entire planets worth of people, the Jeveni , from brutal treatment by the ruling regime. Now they are safe and sound, or are they? what of those who didn't want to be rescued by the wheel? Murders are happening in the refuge and who is to blame? Even more interesting, Six and Chono return to ask for the release of the Jeveni who returned. They are walking right into a revolution as well as a coup. Six as Essk will have to use all their skills to convince the Clerics they are Essk. Really great book. Many thanks to the Author and netgalley for letting me read this book. ... show more

  • Riveting SF Sequel
On Vicious Worlds is a complicated book to review, as it is very much the middle book of a trilogy. Those who read the first book will already be itching to read the second, and those who haven't will be confused. That said, this book is an excellent second-in-a-trilogy queer space opera debut. This picks up with Six, who has spent years crafting themselves to look like Esek Nightfoot, meting out revenge on all who have wrong them over the years (and it's a long list). Bethany Jacobs takes us on a deep and complicated character dive with intricate (but not convoluted) worldbuilding. On Vicious Worlds reminds me of much of my favorite books in the SFF genre these days, where there is no good or evil, everyone is morally grey as a matter of perspective. It's hard to say more without spoiling book one, so SF fans take my word for it, you'll want to read this series. ... show more

  • One question
Seti starts the book as a woman, but returns as a man. There's no explanation, not even a mention that they changed their gender mark. I'm curious what's going on with that.
