Very powerful, but get a cooling pad (and be cautious of Microsoft)
I'm not a tech guru, software programmer, or heavy gamer. I despise purchasing computers because of the built-in obsolescence factor... if I'm going to spend the money, I want it to last for 7+ years. So I wanted a laptop that would be future-proofed for as long as possible, and this one may do the trick. I've been playing a couple of recent games off Steam and some Tabletop Simulator, and this laptop works perfectly. There were two major issues, but I resolved both (see below). Here's my quick summary: PROS + Very fast machine. From boot-up to gaming, it works exceptionally well. + Keyboard and touchpad are great, no issues at all. I like the integrated 10-key and backlighting. + It starts up in seconds. Literally no delay. Open the screen, push the power button, and I'm ready to go. + Again, it feels solid, like it might be one that will last for quite some time. CONS - It gets very hot, particularly around the top-rear area. I knew this from researching product so I bought a three-fan cooling pad and that seems to help. No impact to performance when running at full load but it is definitely hot to the touch. - The charger gets even hotter, so don't leave it near your leg. - The battery life is not good at all. Maybe two and a half hours, and I wasn't even playing a game. So be aware that this is not a productivity laptop for use on long flights or roadtrips if you don't have a power source. Short battery life should not be a surprise if you do your research (no gaming laptop is going to have a long battery life), but I didn't think it would be quite this short. Now, here's my major complaint, and it is more an indictment on Windows than this laptop. I downloaded all the necessary updates when I first got the laptop fired up. Two days after that, there was some optional Windows update that I scheduled to run that night. I made no other changes to my laptop, downloaded no new software, visited no "questionable" websites, and adjusted no settings. The next morning, my laptop was a brick. It couldn't run even a modest game like Wasteland 2 without heavy, unplayable stuttering. Even web browsing was bad. It was like I was using a dial-up connection or a 20 year-old laptop. I tried to roll-back my system to the previous version, and that didn't work. Rebooted, closed all background software, looked for updated drivers (imagine the frustration of typing in a web address and waiting... waiting... waiting... waiting...), but nothing worked. My CPU was clocked out at 100% when I used any software at all. I was furious, but managed to go in and do a system reset. Again, not being tech savvy, I had my concerns that this would cause some major problems... but it worked. After a wait of about 30-45 minutes, the laptop was back up and running like a champ. Maybe even better. Whatever that Windows update was, it destroyed the functionality of my machine. They should be embarrassed. I came thisclose to sending my laptop back and buying a Macbook Pro, because at least I wouldn't have to worry about some randomoid update ruining my laptop out of nowhere. Excellent specs for the cost!
*Initial Review* Like: Good screen, no discernable backlight bleed 144hz panel with G-Sync - nice Samsung NVMe SSD, 2000/2000 read/write per Crystal Disk Samsung RAM, 19/19 etc at 2666 MHz Per CPU-Z, 8 gb of GDDR6, also from Samsung Room for one 2.5 SSD or HHD Thunderbolt 3/USB 3.2 (type C) port Omen control panel - performance mode does elicit a noticable increase in FPS Very good value for the cost - cheaper than comparable models from other manufacturers No like: GTX 2070 Max-Q - description is incorrect Have not found a four zone backlit keyboard - may exist, but currently is single zoned and red only, with option to light WASD keys only Thermal management is adequate - CPU 30-40 c on idle, GPU 35-45 c on idle, however temps ramp up rapidly under load May not be suitable for intense AAA gaming due to inadequate cooling solutions Undervolting and repasting might help, but that's not something the average consumer probably wants to do Keyboard is acceptable, but is not mechanical and does have more travel than I'd like to see Conclusion: Overall, 5 stars despite possible thermal issues. Amazing first purchase!
This is my first official gaming laptop and I'm glad I chose this one. It's a great compromise between form, function, and raw power. The laptop is lighter than the box would make it seem, I was a bit concerned when the shipping box said 8.6 pounds. I am happy to report that the laptop weighs in at around 5 pounds and looks very slick. It does not feel cheaply made compared to some laptops out there but it does NOT have aluminum case. The packaging itself was really nice and simple. Nothing more than an insert about the features of the laptop, a space for the power brick, and the laptop itself. Set up was a breeze and was very fast compared to lower end machines I have used. All told, took me around 5 to 7 minutes to get through the initial setup. Minimal software installed save for one sore point -> McAffe... instant uninstall. Otherwise there wasn't anything that set off alarm bells. It had just what it needed to run the Graphics card and HP support apps. Screen was crisp and responsive. Nice and bright with a clarity that I am really enjoying. No dead pixels here! Sound is awesome. The Bang & Olufsen speakers provide nice, full tone. They can really boom when you raise that volume. It does not feel like you have to struggle to hear anything the sound is directed right at you. Keyboard has a nice feel considering the keys don't travel as far as I might have liked but not bad. I am personally more partial to a mechanical keyboard but I know what I was in for when I bought this. The red back-light is super bright and pretty. Keys are laid out nicely and don't feel cramped. I say that as a man with pretty big man-mitts. Fans are definitely noticeable but not the worst thing ever. I have heard far louder fans on other high-end machines. Cooling seemed to be working just fine while doing basic tasks but it's definitely a good idea to get a cooling pad to assist with heavy gaming just to be on the safe side. For the money, this is a great value. Coming with the i7-9750H and an RTX 2070 max - q with 8GB onboard memory, and 32GB of System RAM it's a great combo at this price point. Sure the NVME SSD is only 512GB and it isn't the fastest one on the market, it still beats the pants off of any spinning drive. There isn't a dvd drive but there is hdmi, mini display port and thunderbolt 3 connectivity. I am a fan of no moving parts in my machine. I thought I would miss not having the optical drive but now I realize how obsolete it has become... if you're older, feel free to mourn with me. Overall, I'm very excited to put this further through its paces and will see how it stands up to heavy use. If you're on the fence with other machines like I was, know that with this machine you're getting a great laptop for a fraction of what others are gonna charge. Also, the build quality is better than many other brands from the research I've done. One of the reasons I picked this one was due to the seemingly good manufacturing done on the machine. Other brands have had myriad issues and I wanted to avoid problems. (Please do your own research about what quality may mean for you!) Buy this laptop. After spending the past seven years in the same desktop system on Windows 7, an upgrade was finally doable. I searched for several weeks, and after this laptop checked off my list of mobility and power, I made the plunge and upgraded. I switched to DaVinci Resolve in conjunction with my switch to the Laptop, so the speed increase I saw was frankly unbelievable. I had a client job, and exported a 15 second 1080p video (upscaled to 4K) in 9 seconds. For a longer half hour interview I'd done, again upscaled to to 4K, it was done in about ten minutes. The fact that it worked at all on first attempt was mind-blowing after working with Premiere CC 2018 for the past few years which rarely exported at all let alone on the first attempt. This has led to the direct benefit of being able to take on several client jobs at once without anxiety, or staying up until 3am reexporting while my PC screams and blows hot air into our bedroom. It's worth sayin this was my first experience with an SSD outside of an old Chromebook I had played with in 2013, so the speed of the machine is incredible to me. The backlit keyboard is also a huge bonus, since I can see my keyboard at night or in dim rooms when playing back videos. Gaming has seen a huge boost. I'm not a PC gamer, but I do own a few games through Steam, like Skyrim and the Arkham games. These games load instantaneously, and play smoother than ever before. I was able to load Assassin's Creed Unity in 9 seconds, vs 90 seconds on my old desktop; Red Dead 2 loaded in about 45 seconds, as opposed to the usual 3.5 minutes on my Xbox; GTA V loads in 20 seconds compared to several minutes on Xbox; and Alan Wake will load in a second or less, and be running at 200 frames per second. If there are any cons, first thing's first, the battery life is virtually nonexistent. This isn't a problem for me, because I'm usually within a few feet of a power outlet, but even while typing on a word processor, the battery life is maybe 4 hours. I'd also say that the machine is pretty loud. Not loud enough to disrupt headphones, but load enough that you may not want to bring it to a quiet coffee shop to work. The heat is also something to be aware of. The space above your keyboard will be hot to the touch while doing intensive tasks such as exporting a video or gaming for more than a few minutes, but is quick to cool down and so far there have been no signs of damage or overstressing of the system. I'd also suggest a riser such as the Lamicall branded one that can be found for about $20 USD. It allows for better airflow under the laptop, and folds nicely into any laptop bag. Dead motherboard poor customer service (updated Review)
Update February 26, 2020: After many attempts HP called me and said I had two options. Get a 6 month extension on my warranty and a 5 dollars Bluetooth Mouse, or a refurbished unit. I had asked previously for a new unit but they told me that it wasn't their policy to give you a replacement but only to fix it. Due to their parts coming from China and the current coronavirus problem they said only now it is an option. I told them that I can't wait for the repair due to me leaving for work but they explained that they can only provide me a refurb unit when one becomes available so they couldn't guarantee that either. I said that due to the age of the unit they should provide a new one but that of course was not in their policy either. Due to my circumstances I had to accept the warranty extension and the cheap mouse as a reprieve from me not having a computer for 2 months. Hate HP NEVER AGAIN! I had an acer v7 nitro that finally met its match with borderlands 3 and a desktop in need of upgrades so I bought this to replace the both of them. I am absolutely happy with the purchase. I bought borderlands 3 and neither of my old rigs could play it except on low settings. This thing plays it on badass settings with absolutely no problems. Sorry I am not a tech guy but after lots of research this was the best one for me for the money. It is a laptop but the fan intakes are on the bottom so if you put it on your lap itll definitely get warm. On a table or positioning it between my legs so that it can get air has kept it pretty cool even when gaming. I am happy with the purchase and think itll hold its own for a while. Just went to Germany with it and it is the perfect size and wasn't to heavy. Update February 5, 2020: Graphics card is dead. Screen was giving me the red screen and scrambled pictures. Finally it stopped doing it but nvidia cant update and the device manager cant find it. Games wont play now at all it just an overpriced chromebook at this point. Update February 20, 2020: Have been dealing with HP support for the last couple of weeks. They kept just trying to do the same updates that I already did. Updated the operating system, updated the drivers this is what 3 different tech support folks tried to do. Sent pictures of the problems, spent hours watching someone do exactly what I did. Finally I convinced them that this computer has a failed card and that it being under warranty needed repairs. They sent out a box via FEDEX with NEXT day which was nice and it was there the next day. They told me that it would take over a month to repair this computer. A MONTH! I didn't spend this kind of money so that they could just hold it. I have been unable to talk to anyone about this because when I go into the repair side of HP it only allows me to check on status. Functionality of a computer with this problem is very limited. Sometimes it worked okay sometimes the screen would scramble so much I just gave up. HP service is terrible. ... show more

Cool but hot
This is an amazing gaming laptop, however, there’s a few things you need to know before buy it, this model don’t have a keyboard light system, keys are just red without backlight, and the battery life is short, very short, just 4 hours of a normal use, and 2 and half hours of gaming performance, but that’s normal in this kind of devices, and also gets hot like hell, so I recommend to use a external Cooler Cooling Pad system, but still, is a very powerful machine, looks pretty awesome and the price is amazing so I recommend to buy it. ... show more

Powerful (but with limitations). Runs hot!
This laptop checked a lot of boxes for me when I was in the market so I pulled the trigger without doing more thorough research. I do not regret my purchase but I did realize I would have been happier with something slightly different. Here is what I have learned. Pros: Specs are amazing for a laptop in this price range (at least on paper; see below) Capacity for an additional laptop HD if you would like to add one 144hz G-Sync display looks great Aluminum interior gives a sleek and premium feel Mouse track pad is the best I have ever used (I normally dread their lack of response but found this one to be very accurate). Red lighting & theme looks good for my personal style Cons: CPU - Temperatures hovers in the high 80's and 90's while under load which is too high for my comfort zone (even with a good cooling pad). The surface of the laptop directly above the CPU gets noticeably hot to the touch. Despite having such a powerful processor, I have capped its performance (around 75% - 80%) to keep the temperature in check. A 17 inch design handles heat better so this is one of the things I would have gone for if I could make the purchase over again. This by far has been my biggest disappointment. GPU - 2070 Max-Q is somewhat underwhelming. Gaming on the 1080p 144hz display is overall great, but the occasional hiccups are frustrating considering a 2070 should be dominating this framerate no problem. Under load the GPU maintains much better temperatures than the CPU so I am not worried about this. Would have gone without Max-Q in the future. Speakers - Boasting a "Bang & Olufsen" speaker, I was expecting it to be a little louder. Sounds better than a standard laptop, but I was not "blown away". Nitpicking as I use a headset most of the time. Bloatware - I expect to encounter this on a $200 laptop from walmart. For an enthusiast laptop that costs a decent amount, there really isn't much of an excuse (this includes a plethora of useless HP apps). Yes you can get rid of it all, but why be bothered in the first place? Nitpicking here as well but it was genuinely annoying. TLDR: Wish I got a 17" Non-Max Q laptop, but still happy with this one (have no choice). Hope this helps! ... show more

This Laptop is truely a Tank.
So this is 10 months after I've bought this laptop. The worst thing about this laptop is probably the keyboard light that you can't change and the webcam. The quality of the camera isn't what I would consider good but everything else makes up for it to the point where it is forgettable. I've thrown a decent number of tasks at this thing. 3D Modeling, 2D Animation, Rendering at the highest setting, Rainbow Six, Minecraft with optifine at its highest setting, and even VRchat. It has handled everything I've thrown at it without any noticeable lag. As expected with something this powerful you will hear the fans if you are working this device like a horse but it usually takes a while to get it to that point. !0 Months in I am at half of the battery cycle and its still marching on like a tank. The only other down side to this is the battery life of 4 hours and 45mins but that is easy to overlook due to how much power something like this would need. 10 out of 10, would definitely recommend. ... show more
