  • The Good, The Bad, The Ugly-FIXED PARTIALLY
Major Update April 2, 2021. As you can read in my review below, the main problem (ugly) with this computer was the poor thermal performance and at times extremely loud fan noise. I removed the Cooler Master radiator fan and substituted the Noctua NF-A12x25 5V PWM premium quiet fan. It was a simple process. This accomplished two things. It noticeably reduced the fan noise compared to the Cooler Master fan and the CPU ran a little cooler overall. It did not completely fix the problem, but it helped somewhat. The CPU still hits 100 degrees Celsius with CPU intensive tasks, but the temps were cooler and the noise reduced with the games listed below in the review. To really solve the problem you would need to replace the radiator unit, which would be a major undertaking. It is worth the minor trouble and cost to replace the fan. I would recommend this to anyone who feels comfortable doing a radiator fan replacement. There are you tube videos showing you how to do it. First let me start with the good. To be able to buy a computer with these specifications for under $2000 in December 2020 is a big plus. The specs are: 1) HP custom triple fan RTX 3080. 2) Core I9-10850K CPU. 3) 32 GB of DDR4-3200 HyperX Fury memory in two modules. 4) 1 TB Western Digital m2. Nvme SSD boot drive that I benchmarked at 1700 MB/sec write and 2300 MB/sec read, and a 2 TB Seagate HDD 7200 RPM storage drive. I was able to replace the Seagate HDD by going into the BIOS to configure a RAID 0 array with two much faster SSD's. 5) 750 watt Cooler Master Platinum power supply. 6) 120mm Cooler Master closed loop liquid All In One CPU cooler. 7) A solidly built, attractive case with RGB lighting with numerous configurations that can be controlled by the included Omen Command Center software. 8) It has two prewired drive cages that can accept hard drives or SSD's. 9) The performance is excellent. The 3DMark scores of >16000 for the GPU and >13000 for the CPU put this model in the top 1% of all the scores in their online database. If I attempted to buy all the components at December 2020 street prices, it would cost almost $3000. If I could get the RTX 3080 at suggested retail price, it would bring the total down to $2100. Sadly it is almost impossible to find one now at the retail price. So getting this unit delivered within two weeks of ordering it at this price was very good. Now for the bad: 1) Although this case design is an improvement over the previous generation Omen desktop, it still has significantly subpar thermal performance. Any demanding pc video games will cause the RTX 3080 to go above 80 degrees Celsius. Any demanding tasks for the CPU, whether a game or video editing etc., will cause the CPU temperature to go above 90 degrees Celsius. When this happens the fans ramp up their speed and become extremely loud, and I mean LOUD!!!. 2) The wiring and cable management that you can see appears untidy, sloppy and slipshod. I can even see a piece of black electrical tape used to hold down a cable so it does not touch the water radiator of the CPU cooler. Now for the ugly: 1) The subpar thermal performance. See major update above. The unit only has one 120mm intake fan, one 92mm exhaust fan, and one 120mm exhaust fan for the radiator/CPU cooler. This results in extremely loud fans with any demanding tasks. The 120mm AIO CPU cooler is totally inadequate for the I9-10850K cooling. You really need a 240mm or bigger AIO cooling unit. When I stress tested the CPU the temperatures would go up to 98 or 99 degrees Celsius and the fans were so loud you really could not tolerate it. It even hit 100 degrees Celsius on one occasion. Over the long run this will not be acceptable. I may have to move this system to a case with better thermal performance and use a bigger CPU cooling unit in the future. I would recommend this unit only at the sub $2000 price point. At a higher price I would look elsewhere for one that has better thermal performance. I hope this has been helpful. Update: Playing at 4K resolution with 120 Hz refresh rate, Shadow of the Tomb Raider with HDR and ray tracing at high and all other settings at maximum resulted in 76 FPS average, 60 minimum and 120 maximum. The CPU temp was in the 90's Celsius and the GPU temp was in the 70's C. The fans were noticeable but not too loud. Playing Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War with HDR, ray tracing and all other settings at maximum resulted in a FPS range of 80 to 120 with an average of about 100. The most demanding game was Cyberpunk 2077. It was set with HDR, DLSS 2.0 at performance, ray tracing at Ultra, and all other settings at High or Ultra. The FPS range was 40-60 with an average in the high 40's. The CPU temps were in the 90's C and the GPU temps stayed in the mid to high 70's C. The fan noise was noticeable but not unduly or exceedingly loud, like when I did CPU stress tests. My recommendation for this system remains unchanged. ... show more

  • Update after 2 Weeks
Style: Intel i9-10850K Size: Omen 30L Set: NVIDIA RTX 3090
Review update after owning for a little over 2 weeks. My original review was ranty and while I am not changing my overall rating I decided to update the content of my review and make some recommendations based on my observations/testing over the last 2 weeks. To make it easier I will break this down into sections and go from there. Design: I really like how this PC looks but as I said in my previous review when you pick a case purely based on aesthetics you can end up compromising airflow or at the very least not optimizing it. This is a mistake I have made with my own builds and this pre-built consistently reminds me of that. If you look at the pictures and find this isn't something you like I am sure you can find something better with better thermals, especially after the current GPU shortage ends. However, if you NEED a machine now, appreciate how this one looks, and can get over the markup then as long as you are willing to do some troubleshooting this is a solid buy. Components: Everything in this build is solid and completely transplantable to another machine in the future (which was a big deal for me), even this case is something I would reuse for a more "medium-high" build because I like how it looks. The i9-10850k and RTX 3090 are a bit warm in general and this case certainly does them no favors however it is manageable. I also imagine a less power-hungry build with an i5 or i7 and an RTX 3060 or lower would have nearly no thermal issues. One big thumb up is that I have personally found the HP OEM RTX 3090 to exceed expectations performance-wise and it consistently benchmarks above other RTX 3090's including Asus Strix which use to be my go-to. Thermals: This is what I ranted about in my original review but mostly "yelling" at all the people complaining about it in their reviews. To start as I said above the i9 and RTX 3090 (as well as the 3080) are known to run warm, that is just how it is. Additionally, all that heat needs to go somewhere so the reviews complaining about "buying a space heater" are just ignorant because regardless of how well the airflow and cooling is that heat is going to be the room you are in. Are there some obvious flaws? Yes. A bigger AIO would be nice and a second intake fan would do this thing wonders. The main issue with the single intake is simply that the GPU is too large and divides the case. Nearly all the air brought in first passes through the GPU which increases the ambient temp in the case itself. The i9 is now battling its own thermal issues as well as the heat coming off the RTX 3090, I improved this by adding another fan inside the case on my own but it isn't a perfect solution, all it really does is assist the primary (only) intake with airflow. That said I did see a 2-3c drop in temps. Managing Thermals: Now that out of the way here is the thing. All of the thermal issues are completely manageable in this rig, as is. The first point I like to make to EVERYONE with high power consumption PC's is that ambient room temperature matters! I have a feeling a lot of people do not take this seriously but if you can budget to spend $2k+ on a gaming rig you really should be able to afford an AC if you are in a hotter climate (or season). I try to keep my room at around 20c (which is 70f~ish) or lower. Even with this, I saw some core temp spikes that made me feel uneasy. The first thing I personally did was undervolt the CPU, which pretty much solved the issue off the bat (no more than -0.04). It turns out however there is an easier solution. A few people have reviewed that going into HP power settings and reducing min processor state to 5% and max to 99% did the job for them. I really did not believe this would work, I thought it was just trolling. I decided to try it and it actually does lol. It is insane that it works but it does so it seems that HP just crapped the bed when it came to their own recommended settings. It is kind of funny because I would expect running hot on the performance settings but not the HP one. I think undervolting kept it a bit cooler however I did not see any spikes by simply adjusting power settings that would concern me. Everything pretty much stayed in the 60s consistently. Now, why do I give this build 3 stars? Frankly, it's just overpriced but that is more so the state of the market. Still, I really don't like overpaying for things. If this rig was $3500 it would be a deal but at over $4000 it's a bit much. Even then it would be a 4-star rating because of the poor decisions from HP to use a small AIO and 1 intake fan, I even would have been happy if HP simply left a cutout or mesh above the front intake for a second one so I could do it myself. Fans are cheap enough. As for noise, which was a common complaint. This machine is very quiet, even with my additional fan. If your is loud I would really inspect all of the components and consider contacting HP as something may be defective or your AIO may be pinched (as I saw in one previous review). Let me clarify that on turbo the fans are pretty noticeable but I would not classify it as loud. ... show more
