  • Returned the Nikon Z50 for this, so HAPPY!
Before I give my review of this awesome camera, a little background on my photography journey. I learned the basics of photography on a Nikon D5300 (over 5yrs ago), then over time I upgraded to a full frame D750. After years of shooting for fun and semi-professionally, I decided to down size and I purchased a used Olympus Em10 mark I. This is when I fell in love with the M43 format as the size and portability allowed me to take my camera everywhere and with that, some of my favorite images were on my Olympus. Coupled with some good glass like the Panny 20mm 1.7, the images were amazing and SHARP. Fast forward to today, I decided to try out the new Nikon Z50 as a way to go full Nikon and possibly get rid of my Olympus. Not because of image quality, but the autofocus on the Em10 Mark I (over 7 yr old camera) was slow especially when trying to track my daughter. I used the Z50 for a little over a week and sure the images were great as was the autofocus, but I hated having to use the Z adapter to use my other glass as it added more bulk which defeated the purpose of such a small camera. To sum things up, I returned the Z50 and ultimately purchased the Olympus em5 mark iii and I could not be happier. The Em5 mark iii sensor is a big improvement from the older 16mp m43 sensor, the dynamic range is GREAT, low light has definitely improved, and 20mp is perfect for whatever I need to shoot. As for image comparisons with the Z50 vs Em5 iii, I can honestly say the the Em5 iii is neck and neck with the Z50. The kit lens on the Z50 is stellar and portrays excellent color and sharpness but nothing the Em5 iii can't do. Once you throw on some good glass, the Olympus really shows you what it can do and that updated sensor shines! Overall, I am extremely happy with this camera. The JPEG colors are vibrant and pop, the stabilization is incredible, the autofocusing is SOOOO much better, the PRO capture is awesome for bird photography, and the EVF is probably the best I've used. If you're a M43 user or someone looking into getting into the format, this is a great camera with the ability to shoot casually AND professionally especially with the amazing M43 glass out there. • Style. Weight, as in light. Functions.
I have had three pro level Olympus cameras over the last two decades. I have loved them, both for their quality and for their ability to work in almost any weather conditions. But I hated their weight, heavy. This camera delivers the same outcomes, has that neat retro look, and will tuck into my pocket if I want to do some inobtrusive street photos, and it doesn't weight my shoulder down. Love this camera. ... show more

  • Ease Of Photographing
In Picture Mode a very easy camera to use with excellent results. Olympus improved low light picture taking and location of on/off lever. I highly recommend this light weight camera. I use it mostly for photos of people.

  • Micro Four Thirds is NOT Dead !!
For those who think " MFTs " are to small and can't be taken seriously for " Real " Photography , think again !! This third follow up to the excellent " OMD EM5 . " line is packed with features in a small , easy to carry body ! As you can see from my sample pics , it can tackle ANY job and do it well ! Very pleased with this addition to my stable ! ... show more

  • Perfect camera for me, but HUGE design flaw making it almost useless.
I started out with a EM10-MK iii and loved it but was really excited for all the great features in the bigger brother EM5 MKiii. In particular the weather sealing, high res shot, better AF. All in a package hardly bigger than the EM10. My one concern was their decison to go to a plastic body instead of metal, but in the end I decided they must have known what they were doing... I Ordered one pretty early on and within 6 months of very light use noticed the tri pod mounting area was cracking. And it kept getting worse. To the point where the bottom plate was separating from the rest of the body. Making is useless on a trip pod and flopping around. Even before it cracked the frame is so weak the camera will flex with any of the metal pro lenses, and the 12-100 F4 pro is my everyday lens. I sent it back to them for warrenty and they initially told me it wasn't covered, I was able to complain and get it covered. But still this should be covered by warrenty without question, shouldn't have to fight it. I've now had my repaired body for about 4 months of very light use and have already noticed another hairline crack appearing!!!! And this time around I was extra careful not to over tighten and even bought a larger L bracket to hopefully spread out the forces on the bottom plate. So incredibly disappointing. One of the things I loved about Olympus was how tough and durable the bodies where. My EM10 is a tank and took so much abuse and still works 100% even though it's not technically weather sealed. At this point I'd just want my money back so I can switch to a different brand unless they come out with a design improvement or a replacement bottom plate made from metal. It's just not useable. Such as shame as the feature set is exactly what I want, they just had to put it in such a horribly under engineered cheap plastic shell instead of spending the extra $20 to make the plate from metal. ... show more

  • wonderful lightweight camera
I like this camera! The High res mode is great for Landscape images. It MUST be used on a tripod for High-res, though. If you want Handheld High res, as well as some other features, check out the E-M1 Mark III.
