  • Could be better
It's a nice metal shade, but why a round shade has to use a screw on the side to secure it, I don't understand. The screw sticks out and is obtrusive. I fear it will not hold and the shade will be lost. I also think it's a bit overpriced for what it is. I wish this screwed into the filter thread, or that it was rectangular, like the shade for the 12mm, which does not fit the 17. ... show more

  • Pricy lens hood, but is nice.
I bought this for my Olympus 17mm f1.8 lens here at Amazon. Thought it was the best price around when I ordered it. It is a very nice piece of metal, and fits the lens like a glove. It is a clamp type hood. Goes with the metal lens construction perfectly. Took it out on very sunny days without getting any flare in the Pics. Since I work as an engineer and with metals, this is a work of art for fit and finish. I understand that in smaller quantities that manufacturing costs are higher. That's the way it is, not trying to justify overpricing. The (build) quality of this is outstanding. However, why only 4 stars? I feel that even though Olympus is the best around, they price gouge and this should have been included with the lens. That was opinion. Fact: The lens hood is still worth buying, even under protest. ... show more

  • Olympus hoods fit and work with no marring of the lens.
Everyone seems to make cheap hoods for olympus lenses and that is just what they are. Cheap. The proper hood that works best for any lens has to be designed for that lens. I know that Olympus lens hoods come at a premium price. I also think Olympus is nuts for not including the hood with the lens and just building the cost into the price of the lens. At the present this is our reality. Do yourself a favor, bite the bullet, and get the Olympus hood that was made for your lens investment. I hope this gets better in the future. I see some hope that Olympus may be listening. The new 12-40 f2.8 Pro Olympus lens that I just sold my soul for came with a case and the "hood". It darn well should have too! These comments apply to all Olympus hoods. I have them for all my Olympus lenses. ... show more

  • I like it but......
First off, this would be rated a 5 star if not for the price. This is an expensive item for something that should be included with the lens (although I am sure that an included hood would not be of this quality, or metal). If the price does not bother you, then this hood is a must have accessory for you lens. It looks great and is well made. Just not great value for the money. If you are like me though, you will have to have it, not an aftermarket one. ... show more

  • Nicely made. Expensive for what it is.
I do not understand why Olympus does not include this with the lens purchase. I feel a little nickel and dimed about this. Having that off my chest, this is very well made and I am sure does its job. I always shoot with the hood, so frankly I don't see myself putting the effort into making identical shots without the hood and looking for flaws. I accept that these things help. There are other non-Olympus hoods that appear identical, plus get good reviews that are worth considering. Having the official Olympus hood was important to me. (Maybe irrationally so.) Why don't they make this attach with a bayonet mount? ... show more

  • Protection and shade
Lens shade and "glass" protection. I get one for all except fisheyes (obviously).

  • Shade
Shade for the 17mm camera plus think about a filter for the lens. The shade doesn't screw into the lens but fits over the lens with a lock screw but attractive anyway and I see no problems in getting loose or in the way. Different than other lens shades that screw or set into the lens.
