  • Replaced broken unit
Style: 6-12" Woodworking
Cheap vise. After using it to hold pieces of wood for hand sawing and planing, it now cannot hold anything - the threads loosened and cannot tighten anymore. Update: Attentive customer service. Sent replacement for same model after contacting them. So far so good, vise is holding well. Impressed that even after a year, they still stand behind their product. ... show more

  • Good, well functioning WW vise for hobbyist
Style: 6-12" Woodworking
I am happy I bought it. Seeing some of other reviews I was doubtful, but not now. I am a mid-level woodworking hobbyist, and need it as an end vise with a bench dog for my bench, and it fits my needs perfectly -- considering the price. Interestingly that the opening width is almost 7" -- surprisingly large (after putting in two 3/4" plywood "cheeks", I still have more than 5" opening). Slight drawbacks: (a) the vise was generously covered by black paint, which resulted in the steel dog being stuck in its nest -- quickly solved by using WD-40 and a knife with a thin blade to pry it free; (b) two guiding rods are a bit loose in their threaded holding holes -- but this is a common thing for most of woodworking vises; will fix it by using LOCK-TIGHT' and (c) the winged nut holding the steel dog is a bit drawn out and the round bar used to tighten the vise, can graze it; a few light strokes by metal file fixed it. I haven't install it at my bench yet (still working on the bench), but will do it later. If everything is OK, I'll purchase another one, or perhaps two (for other end of my bench and for smaller bench) -- you cannot beat them for that price... ... show more

Not expensive, and not a great vise.

  • Perfectly serviceable vice
Style: 6-12" Woodworking
For the money its 4 stars, if you are comparing this to a high end US made vice then its a 3. As long as you're willing to do some fine tuning and have realistic expectations about this being a light duty vice then you'll be happy with it. Set up was easy. To make things easier, you need to remove the cotter pin in the screw shaft and take the two halves of the vise apart. Make a couple of wood jaws up and install them before you reassemble. On the bench side you have to predrill holes in the jaws to allow you to screw into the bench. QC on these isn't great. The bench dog had so many rough burrs on it that it was pretty difficult to move. I had to pull it out with vice grips. After giving it about 1 second on the belt sander it was perfect. The castings have some imperfections but at the end of the day it works. With the wood jaws it holds tight, and that's all its supposed to do. ... show more

  • I received this vice today and it does have the ...
Style: 6-12" Woodworking
I received this vice today and it does have the metal dog as described. I will update the review after I get it installed an use it. Update: I have installed the vice and it works ok. I didn't expect it to be the greatest thing ever for the price. It does clamp well as long as you use the center of the vice. Clamping to one side to cut dovetails, the vice flexes very easily and does not stay even across the jaw. I am a hobby woodworker, and I think it will be fine for me, but probably not for a serious/professional. Another Update: I think I have had this vice for a month or so. I only use it as a hobby (maybe 8-10 hours since installed.) Here is what has happened so far. The guide rods have came loose, and cause the vice jaws not to close completely. Have tightened them twice now. vice flexes super easy, as I stated before. Unless you are holding something directly in the middle of the jaw, you can't tighten it enough to hold for fear of breaking or bending something... The handle knob came off and parts scattered. The handle hit the wing nut for the vice dog, and broke half of the wing nut off. I am thinking you might add another 20-30 bucks and get a different vice. I thought it would be fine for what I did, but really hasn't been that good for just a month of light use. If you do buy it, get the vice grips out when you get it and tighten the guide rods and handle knobs right off. I can't say that I am terribly disappointed for what it costs, but one of those things where you will be better off to pay a little more. ... show more

  • Don't think you can beat it for the price.
Style: 6-12" Woodworking
With all the comments saying that there was no dog I was a bit skeptical but for $16.48 even with no dog I'd consider it a great deal. When mine arrived it DID in fact have the dog and it was apparently a newer model (even though it still had the same 38-736 model number) as the box stated 6 1/2" instead of 6" and it measured out at 6 1/2" (the product details do say 6 1/2"). It took some cleaning to remove the oil on the rods. Even after removing the oil it still operated smoothly. If I ever have any issues I'd simply apply some stick wax instead of oil. The dog was a bit rusty and I'm not sure it will be useful anyway unless your bench thickness is only about 2 1/4" which is the measurement from the base mounting surface to the top of the vise. While they say it mounts to the face of your bench and there are 2 countersunk holes on the back face for this there are also 4 countersunk holes on the base mounting surface for attaching from below. As mentioned those mounting holes are not large (a 3/16" drill bit fits easily in them and has some wiggle room). The front face on mine had 2 threaded holes for attaching a jaw pad while the rear face had 2 non-threaded holes for this purpose. The metal handle for operating the vise has a nice feature of a thick rubber O-ring at each end that can be moved to keep the handle positioned wherever you want it. ... show more
