Our kids often forgot to take their keys with them when leaving for school, or managed to lock themselves out when they were only going out for a couple of minutes. I have an odd sleep schedule and am often asleep during the day, and we have a very excitable dog who thinks the world is ending whenever he hears the doorbell or a knock. This wasn't a good combination, haha. This lock/doorknob has been a huge help since I put it in. It was an easy install. The printed instructions aren't perfect; there are some inconsistencies between the illustration and the product itself, and a couple of steps that could use more detail, but if you have any common sense and/or a basic sense of mechanical logic, it's nothing that will trip you up, and I think they expect most people to use the video instructions in any case. I would have checked the video if I'd run into any difficulties I couldn't solve on my own, but all of my problems were specific to our house (and the hack job done on the door frame by whoever built it) and not the product. If you're replacing a more traditional knob, chances are you'll need to drill an extra hole in your door; the vertical format of the keypad/reader needs a screw for stability (you don't want the keypad being able to pivot and wobble around the main mechanism) and the printed instructions give no indication of this at all even though it's clearly an intended step. Perhaps the video does, I couldn't say. Worth noting that if you have a deadbolt on your door that sits above your current doorknob, you'll likely need to move it to the bottom and install this above to accomodate the height of the keypad/reader. Once installed, the lock takes 4 AA batteries; the phone app used to set up and manage the lock tracks the battery health, and we've had it in place for a few weeks without it dropping below 100%, so you shouldn't have to worry about replacing them very often. Connecting the app via Bluetooth was quick and painless, and setting up fingerprints takes almost no time at all. The reader has no problem recognizing any of the prints we have stored in it; for the first little while, the kids were racing each other home from school because they both wanted to be the one to unlock it. There's no shortage of methods to unlock the door; the fingerprint reader is our default, but you can set up multiple codes, custom or random; add temporary or single-use codes for guests; two RF tag cards are included as well as two traditional keys; and if you're nearby enough for your phone to connect, you can unlock directly from the app. We keep the RF tags and keys on keyrings for my wife and I as emergency backups just in case the other methods won't work for some reason, but haven't had to use them yet beyond testing them initially. ... show more

This lock is great! Black and satin stainless, it is not a deadbolt so I used it inside on a closet vs the front door, but has a nice look. The handle is handle vs knob. What makes this unique is the "fingerprint" option. You can program it to open with users fingerprints. This is super convenient for regular users rather than having to use codes or keys. It does have an app with codes, ability to give out temporary codes, 2 keys, and 2 key cards. Easy to set up too. ... show more

UPDATE: I have a ton of smart locks, including a few by the major lock brands, but this one is by far the most impressive. We've had it for a while now but just finished implementing all of the features through the app and it is a big hit with adults and kids alike and I felt like I needed to update my review accordingly. You can't help but feel like you are Max Smart himself when you put your finger to the door for a quick fingerprint scan and the female robot voice tells you "unlocked" while lights flash and the door unlocks. Once I got the hang of where to press, it scans correctly every time. The touchpad is very responsive. Although I don't find it much different than getting keys out, the fobs that open it are pretty fun. You can also lock and unlock via the app or code, and the app has more options for issuing temporary and one-time codes than the major lock brands do. Finally, for the traditionalists, you can use the key, but the keyhole is disguised by a magnetic cover that makes it look like part of the door handle. Original review: I got this for a storage shed at a vacation home--I wanted to be able to give friends or family codes or unlock it remotely when needed. I have several name-brand smart locks and this was just as easy to set up and install as those. I was actually able to reuse the existing locking mechanism innards that were already on the door, which was nice--no cutting or drilling. I am personally so used to entering a code that I just find that to be quicker than fiddling with the the other options. My only complaint is that, if you buy a name brand smart lock, you can often rekey it yourself to match your other house keys and therefore don't need to add keys to your key ring (and having a backup key somewhere IS a must for these locks, regardless of brand). However, this wasn't advertised as being able to be rekeyed, so I did not deduct any stars. ... show more
