  • wonderful reference book
Format: Hardcover
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my art instructor. I had the paper back copy of it , but wanted to get her a really nice and useful hard copy. It is filled with gorgeous prints of "The Masters" works with exceptionally descriptive pages of how the painting was achieved. I love this book, and she did too as one of her favorites. ... show more

  • Masterful portraits
Format: Hardcover
Great illustrations and demonstration of technique. Don't forget to check publication date - this is not a recent book but a good reference for your painting library. Artist paints from dark to light using glazing techniques, resulting in "Old Masters" effect.

  • Not your average "how to paint" book
Format: Hardcover
I love this book, although I just saw a video (David Paints an Interior) where David Leffel describes the agony of writing it many years ago. He said that he guessed it turned out ok, because people told him they learned from it. I am among them. David Leffel is one artist where I really cannot predict what he will do next when he is painting, but the results are sublime. Even when he describes "the language of painting," and what he is doing, I don't get it. This book reveals the basics and his underlying philosophy. Even tho I will never paint like David Leffel, I am starting to get it. I read and savor it slowly, like an after dinner treat. ... show more

  • Great book by a great teacher
Format: Hardcover
This is an excellent book that will help introduce wisdom into oil painting. While listening and watching Mr. Leffel is wonderful, not everyone can do that. David Leffel will make you think. If you are serious about painting this book is a must.

This book is very old. Painting styles have changed. Taste has changed. And the writing is dated.
