Considering getting chickens? This is for you!
Format: Kindle
This book starts off with some of the many 'bads' of factory chicken farming and suggests that the much better alternative is to raise your own if at all possible. Raising chickens and growing a garden go hand in hand. Feed the chickens your kitchen vegetable scraps and they will supply you with fertilizer. Chickens can be good therapy. I can really attest to this. We LOVE to watch our chickens scurrying around and our children will often be seen with one in their arms. Chickens do not answer back or give you a hard time, being extremely tolerant of young hands. How much space do you need? A lot of helpful info is provided along with a picture to give you an idea for an enclosed coup if you do not want them running loose. Do you need to purchase the "Hilton" of chicken coups? This author provides plenty of practical advice on building/buying your coup on a budget if this is an important consideration of yours PLUS he also gives some great advice on how to prevent loss. What breed is right for your situation? Many options are discussed. How and what should you feed your chickens? A commercial feed is always an option but the author also provides some lists of "natural" foods you can feed and also ones you should not feed. How can you best care for them in winter? Some great practical advice is given here. As someone who has raised free range chickens for years I was interested to read what this author had to say on the subject. Have to say that overall I was impressed! One comment I did not agree with was this - "Let your chickens loose in your garden for an hour or two every day." That is a great idea if you have nothing growing in it but chickens can devastate a growing garden especially seedlings so I recommend you have your garden well fenced and only allow them in when it is fallow or where you are growing a well established root crop etc like potatoes. Enjoy your chickens! ... show more

Okay
Format: Kindle
Not a whole lot of specifics. I think there is a lot more information on the many chicken blogs and Facebook pages that include illustrations. Some of the information is also incorrect, but nothing that would be detrimental to your chickens. Like I said, it is an okay book though glad it was free and would recommend spending the time you would spend reading this on the internet reading the popular chicken blogs. ... show more

great book.
Format: Kindle
raising a chicken in backyard is not an easy task, because i have tried it and failed too! that's the reason the gave up. but one of my friend suggested that i should give this book a try. after going through this book i can actually have chickens in my backyard. the book gives a lot of ideas and guidelines to make you understand what you should do, and what not. its not that i have turned straight from a novice to an expert but yes i know what i am expected of, and most importantly what i should expect! ... show more

Some good information for us newbies
Format: Kindle
My fiancee and I are trying to do all things healthy these days, and eating eggs from a source we know has nothing to do with GMOs is our latest addition. This book is full of info all beginners will need - even those with limited space for coops. I agree with Dr Stone's comment about raising chickens and gardening going hand in hand since you feed chickens kitchen vegetable scraps thus get fertilizer in return. What I'm unsure about is the advise to allow your chickens to run through the garden a couple of hours a day. We did this for about 20 minutes and our four chickens were close to eliminating our tomato plants. Ours are privvy to a large coop as we intend to add more (our neighbors are loving fresh eggs - maybe not so much the rooster wake up calls). Thankfully we live in a community on the lake, and most homeowners only visit on weekends. I read only 2 chickens can be raised in certain city limits, and wonder how this book works for them I appreciated the section on avoiding loss - there are many animals after chickens, snakes being one of the worst on a waterfront community. ... show more
