  • Excellent Technical Guide for Solar Planning & Design!
Format: Kindle
This book gave me exactly what I had been looking for! I've read many web articles for basic information to design and build my own solar system for simple projects. But some of the details I've been wanting have escaped me. This book did a great job filling in the technical details I'd been looking for! For example, on solar controllers, I'd read many similar descriptions on the difference between PWM and MPPT controller technologies for solar-charging batteries. But I could find nothing on the exact details of what a "Max Power Point" represents (in an MPPT controller) and how determining and measuring this helps the controller be more efficient than PWM. The author's descriptions and charts in the chapter "Different Charge Controllers" gave me exactly what I wanted to know, in relatively simple terms for a beginner. The chapter on "Selecting a Charge Controller" also gave me the details on why a 24V solar panel works better with MPPT controllers for charging a 12V battery in less-than-ideal sun conditions. The MPPT controller I ended up buying recommended a 24V solar panel (or series pair) for that controller with a 12V battery, and this section of the book gave me a good description for why. All stuff I didn't know I needed to know for even my simple solar projects! So, in addition to providing convenient refreshers and handy formulas on basic electronics needed for my projects, this book provided me answers to questions I had on selecting the right combination of solar panel(s) and controllers to get my projects working correctly! Great reference guide and tutorial book! ... show more

  • Fantastic Book on Solar Power for onor off-grid power options.
Format: Paperback
Excellent book! I was a builder for 20 years, and learned a lot from this book. Love the calculations and sizing for each individual application. Everyone wanting off-grid or on-grid options needs this book!

  • Great book for someone new to installing solar power systems!
Format: Paperback
Nice book for someone newly interested in installing their own solar power system. I've used it to install a small solar pump house to run a sprinkler system fed by a lake. The book answered several obvious questions to help a person become more knowledgeable in solar systems and even answered some questions I didn't know I had until I started reading the book. It covers a lot of topics and explains things at a low level for ease of understanding. ... show more

  • TOO TECHNICAL FOR NOVICES
Format: Paperback
I give it 3 stars cause maybe this book is helpful for people with more advanced knowledge how to build diy solar, but more of a one-star for novices. For a novice, the book is too technical. And some sections were confusing to understand, very likely cause the book is hard to follow without background knowledge on solar. Maybe the book would have been best separated into several books; maybe som' like: Novice - 12V 1000W inverter set up, beginner 12V/24V 2000-3000W inverter set up , intermediate and advanced 24V/48V 4000W+ inverter set up. Also, some sections did not make sense; ex. p.115, jumps from an amps calculation for a wire, but then the wire chart selection is by temperature.... huh?. Also, fuse section, describes fuse types but no explanation exactly how fuse power is determined. The book gets overwhelming for a novice. I akin the book to showing a novice carpenter how to glue 2 pieces of wood together by describing tech aspects on how joist loads are determined for a mansion. before installing them. If you already understand solar, I'm sure you will find this book very helpful. But novices, the book seems tmi..... ... show more

  • Excellent book
Format: Paperback
Terrific book for beginners and advanced solar off grid folks. Love the examples of different types of possible setups in the back, one of which I will be using. I have some trouble with Nick's accent on his videos, but he writes with clarity.
