Description

Labor and related costs account for more than half of the price of the average home solar installation. But homeowners can save thousands of dollars with this user-friendly manual, which follows the same process professional contractors use. Through detailed directions and step-by-step photos, veteran solar installer Joseph Burdick and seasoned builder Philip Schmidt teach you how to determine the size, placement, and type of installation you’ll need. This comprehensive DIY guide covers everything from assembling rooftop racking or building a ground-mount structure to setting up the electrical connections and making a battery bank for off-grid systems. • Very helpful diy install book
I got a couple of books on solar installation and this one was the most useful and informative out of them all. Its well written, covers a good level of detail, and cleared up some areas i wasn't sure about. Well worth the investment, I'd recommend this over even the better rated book.

  • Fantastic book for DIY *or* contracted install
I am going to install a solar PV system, either this fall or in the spring. This book has been incredible fantastic! It has a logical progression from planning to installation. It is chock full of photographs, a few of which are more "scene setting" but many of which in each chapter show valuable details of actual installations. You may at first think, "Nah, I don't need that--I'm hiring someone" but I think you're wrong. There are *so* many details in a solar install, like... will you use 60 or 72 cell panels? Install them in landscape or portrait orientation? Is it grid-tied, off-grid, or hybrid (grid-tied with battery)? (This will determine many of the large items that may need to be installed.) This book will be invaluable for anyone doing a DIY install. But I also urge anyone planning to hire professionals to also read it, so you will become very familiar with all the steps, all the options, and so you can participate intelligently in both crafting the design for your intended system as well as asking pointed questions of the proposed installers once you get a bid. ... show more

  • Amazing book for a DIY install
Once I decided to tackle a DYI install of solar at my home, I ordered a couple of books to help me through the research and plan development stage. This book, by far, was the best one that I ordered. Honestly, once I got into this book I never used any of the others again. Everything was explained clearly and gave me enough information to get started with my project. I consider myself to have average mechanical and electrical skills, and I was able to complete the entire process -- including all electrical and mechanical -- by myself and passing my inspections on the first try. Couldn't recommend this resource enough! ... show more

  • OK first step, but pretty basic.
This worked fine for me as a starter but don't expect anything very detailed. If you know nothing about solar (like me), but have wired complete new houses (as I have) from new main panels to sub-panels to every outlet and light through a hundred J-boxes, you'll find this annoying. My worry is the technology of inverters, batteries, and racking, not hooking up conduit to the regular mains with wire nuts, where the author advises getting "professional help", all while making out that the solar end of it is a no-brainer once you read this book. I didn't get the equivalent of what many books purchased at home improvement stores give on home wiring, framing, or plumbing. It's simply not enough. But I don't regret the purchase. It's a fine starting point. ... show more
