  • Excellent starting point for beginners .
Well explained basics that include LiFePo4 and “older” lead acid batteries. (Use LiFePo in almost every situation except very cold -0 climates, plus they are less expensive in the long run, much better capabilities and much lighter). $7 well spent.

  • Solar Made Easy Is Right
This book is fantastic. The book has a durable plastic spiral binding, it is only 89 pages long but is packed with good information with little to no fluff. Every paragraph contains the information you need. The book could walk a child through setting up a solar system. The book is well-organized and concise. The order in which the author has laid out the information is perfect, taking you from understanding electricity, calculating power needs, and setting up simple systems to larger systems. It lays out several scenarios from small and simple to large and more complex. He even breaks it down to "Lazy Method, The Minimalist, The Classic 400 Watt, The Off Grid King, and Ultra Lightweight. Great explanations on recommended battery bank size for each of the above scenarios, battery types best suited for solar, wire, and fuse sizes, and installation of same. He takes you through what you must have to what you can do without if money is an issue. I have followed the author on YouTube since I first entertained setting up an emergency solar backup system....he knows his stuff and is enjoyable to watch. I highly recommend subscribing to his channel, DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse. For such a young man, he is the go-to source for all things solar. If you are considering solar, this book is a must and I highly recommend checking out his channel if you are seriously considering doing anything solar. ... show more

  • Great DIY Reference for Building Off-Grid/RV/Emergency Power Systems
I'm in South Central Texas. After our 2021 week long power & other utilities outage in sub freezing weather. I started thinking about emergency power. Good thing I did, because I was marginally ready for our February 2023 ice storm outages. I'm now in the process of upgrading capacity/convenience for more of these situations. I've recently watched perhaps a dozen of Prowse'e videos. He goes quickly through the designs, components, math, etc. But for someone actually going to build a system, his book (in Paperback) is essential. The free Kindle version is nice, but having an actual book, that provides much easier marking, highlighting, notes, more relaxing, and easier to read information is better. At ~$5.00, it's the cheapest, most valuable component of the DIY power system. Besides solar, he also has some attention paid to wind and gas generators as sources. For DIY systems, the emphasis is on the storage capacity in the system. Sun, wind and even gas generators (fuel) are limited sources. I held back one star because I felt there could be worksheet samples, and a few other detail enhancements included, but for $5, it's amazing. I suspect that anyone taking on designing & building off-grid power systems, they should be able to build spreadsheet (Excel) estimates and inventory lists. I happen to be a retired engineer (not electrical), so I know about the estimating and other spreadsheets used... but not all of the readers of this book may have that background. I'd have removed just 1/2 Star, but that isn't available here. After I got my book, I gifted another one to an old buddy jn California, who's also handy with tools, and may have been thinking of emergency power... considering our nationwide weakening/vulnerable energy production & delivery. ... show more

  • A good basic course in solar technology for beginners.
This is a very good introductory book for people with little or no experience in solar applications. Even those people with a basic knowledge solar technology will benefit from this material. A major plus is the book is spiral bound. This facilitated my using the manual as I reviewed my solar design. I would buy this book again. ... show more

  • Excellent how to book
I’ve used this book not only for setting up off grid for my camper but also for a backup power system for my home. It explains how solar systems work, what you need, what are the best batteries to use and why and the relationships between the parts. It gives you all the formulas you need for calculating what size system fits your needs and the electrical specifics you will need to meet those needs. Simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. However, an Ohm’s Law available in the app stores will do the calculations for you. Good how to book and anybody can do it. Remember, if you want to connect a solar system to your house as a backup, have a certified electrician connect to your house panel with a main line cut off switch ... show more

  • Great book for beginners
This book was indispensable to me in designing and building my first DIY solar power system for an off-grid truck bed camper set up. The author does a great job of walking you through basic electrical theory, various system components, wire sizing, fuse placement, properly constructed connections, tools, techniques, and much more. This book is a very practical and useful resource for anyone that is reasonably handy and wants to build their own custom mobile solar power system that is reliable, functional and safe to operate. The associated website also offers numerous videos and links to recommended components which I found to be indispensable as I sorted through the process. If you're new to this topic I highly recommend buying and reading this book first. ... show more
