Off grid home building essentials is an excellent book to start your journey for living off grid. What it does is give you a a comprehensive overview of considerations for living off grid. The book is broken up into four sections which cover the key components of off grid living: home building examples; home electrical systems; water source ideas; and heating/cooling/plumbing. It covers different types of examples in each section along with cost projections, and pros/cons. The book does not make any recommendations that you should go one way or another. Rather, it lays out the information in an easy to read and understandable manner so that you can make an informed decision as to what would suit your needs. I found this book extremely beneficial as I did not know much of the information it cites. This book contains very helpful insight for those beginning their off grid journey. It is well laid out into 4 parts, and I found each part full of helpful and detailed information. I liked how part 1 compares 19 types of off grid house types, with pros & cons, labor and material needs, and tables showing cost per square foot and build time. Part 2 covers off grid electrical systems—Solar, Wind, Hydro, and Generators—explaining how each works, with schematics and cost breakdowns. I really appreciated the attention to detail. Part 3 details off grid water systems, including well drilling, pump sizing and depth, and pressure tank installation. And part 4 explores off grid heating and cooling options like geothermal, hydronic floors, and passive/active solar water heating, with energy-saving tips. I learned so much from this book! The info isn't overwhelming or too in-depth, which would make it hard to understand or follow for someone with little to no experience with this subject. Wow! If you are thinking about taking the plunge to live off grid, this is your go to book! Lots of thorough research about various homes to build and how to comfortable live in them. The author truly thought of everything. The book is well organized and very easy to read. I never knew there were so many options.
