    • What A Difference!! - Updated
I had used gut strings for probably 30 years and was reluctant to change to synthetic. I upgraded and bought a very sweet 100 year old German violin about 3 years ago and the shop outfitted it with Dominants and said that was their recommended string for the character of the violin. I was past due putting new strings on and decided to do a little research before getting another set of Dominants. Boy, I'm glad I did. I used to play mainly in a symphonic setting, but now do more small group work at church, with drums, guitars, and keyboards. In that setting, I have to use a pickup and it takes the depth out of the instrument. Seeing the reviews about the darker tone of the Obligatos, it seemed like these would help balance out the tone. The strings arrived the day before I had to do some solo work, so I decided to wait to install. That gave me a good chance to really pay attention to the sound before switching strings. I put the new strings on this morning and what a difference! I don't think the sound is darker - on my violin I actually think it sounds brighter. It is very rich, penetrating, and seems to have more dynamic. I can't wait to get on stage and see how it blends with the rest of the group. I still do some orchestral work at church around the holidays (un-mic'ed) and think that these will blend very nicely in that setting too. When using gut, I used Pirastro Eudoxas, so I was hopeful that the Pirastro Obligatos would be just as good. They didn't disappoint! 12/9/12 update - I wanted to provide an update, now that I've had the strings a couple of months. Unfortunately, I can't give these 5 stars any more. Although the initial tone was superior to the Dominants, I've already had to replace the strings. They died a very early death that brought on a buzz in the G and D strings and a general flatness across the board. The buzz was so pervasive that I actually thought I needed to have my instrument checked for a crack or damage. Fortunately, I saved the old Dominants for an emergency (didn't figure I needed to order another set to have on hand so soon). I put the used Dominants back on and my buzz disappeared. Didn't really want to resort to an old set of strings, but I was playing in a wedding and needed to do something fast. Once I get finished with the hectic holidays (I have a musical at church next weekend), then it looks like it's back to the drawing board to research another set of strings. I was debating between the Evah Pirazzi's and the Obligato's when I got these, so maybe I'll try the Pirazzi's next time. I've got to think that there's something out there superior to the Dominants, but just haven't found it in another synthetic yet. ... show more

I just ordered my second pair of the Obligatos. They are great all around strings; much better than the Corellis I replaced. My first pair of Obligatos lasted a year and a half, then I noticed they weren't as responsive, and became more difficult to play. Actually, I was surprised they lasted that long. The new set was easy to break in (tuning stablizied within a week) and they have a great tone. (I think my violin would sound good with a lot of different brands of strings, however the obligatos really make a subtle difference to me, especially on sustained notes). They can make a really good violin sound great. I know they are expensive, but they last longer than traditional gut strings, and I love that they stay in tune. I ordered mine through Johnson String Instruments, and I received them within a week of ordering them. (I know JSI was a few dollars more than their competitors, but they have great service--this is my third order from them and I intend to order from them in the future.) I wouldn't put the obligatos on a student level violin, but if you have a fairly decent violin ($5000-10,000 range) they are worth the price. If I could afford to change them out more frequently, I would, but they still sound great after a year and a half of playing about 10 hours per week. ... show more

I purchased a new violin online, mid-range price, and thought I would try playing it in comparison with the student violin that I had been playing and had outgrown. The new violin looks beautiful, except the strings were cheap and sounded so terrible. I ordered and put these Obligato strings on. What a difference! The sound is wonderful and it also improves the playability with the bow. I definitely would recommend these strings. It is most assuredly worth the cost. The sound improve amazingly I was hesitant to buy these ones but finally other friends of my musicians have convinced me to buy this product. I have to admit I’ve never heard my violin sound so vibrant so beautiful deep and incredibly strong.     • Not as "dark" and expected
Firstly, let me say that I decided to try Obligatos because I read many times that they have a very "dark" sound. Now this can be an ambiguous term and may have a meaning for me that is not intended, but I was looking for a gritty, deep, almost viola quality sound. They took about a week and a half to break in and get their "true" sound. They have a good quality, warm sound but lack that "dark" quality I was seeking. I had been using Evah Pirazzis and almost think they had more the quality I have been wanting but went with a new model anyway. While they are a great quality sound, don't expect too much if you are like me and looking for that dark, gut string sound. I think next time I'll actually go with a true gut core. I won't buy these again, but will enjoy them while I have them. ... show more
