  • A very well considered keyboard that offers a unique typing experience
Color: Gateron Blue Switch
I will note first I have many keyboards, from Topres to mechanical to buckling to membrane to scissor. In my quest to find a comfortable daily typing keyboard (to replace my daily-driver 2012 MBP chicklet keyboard) I acquired one of these NuPhys, specifically for its novelty in offering the low-profile mechanical keys with PBT caps, opting for blue-switches for typing emphasis. Upon reception I was immediately impressed by the build quality and presentation. The designers clearly put effort into the keyboard and the thinking behind it. I had recently grabbed a Keychron K3 with similar specs but found the keys too crowded and with poor keycaps (though I believe they offer PBT caps on their site, if in stock); meanwhile the NuPhy held me in excitement, it feels more robust and inviting while still keeping a small profile. The chassis feels sturdy and minimal, the feet adequately keep it from moving, and the arrow keys in this format work well. The wireless options are standard, but I did appreciate them including a wireless dongle on top of the Bluetooth (though the dongle has no markings on it to designate it is paired to this keyboard, and it will be easy to lose without some kind of socket for holding on the board itself). The keys are truly the selling point here, the design choices just reinforce that I felt good buying it (which isn't the case with other keyboards). But it becomes a very specific kind of feeling. Honestly I grew to resent that I had ordered a blue-switch setup - the keys, with their almost cartoon friendliness in sculpting and low travel time, somehow do not read as "clicky" to me after use like a chicklet does; I should have opted for brown-switch or even red-switches and the pleasant thunk that the frame relates (which seems unique to this board) and it would have felt a much more integrated experience. Somehow the clicking detracts from the "roundness" or softness that the rest of the board really suggests to me. This became more apparent when I swapped out some of the switches with included singles of the others, and luckily, if I am so interested, I can order a set of the other switches and exploit the difference thanks to the hotswappable nature. Which doesn't make much sense to me otherwise - since I can't imagine personally using more than one switch type for the whole board. Maybe I will break down and try some kind of maddening dual-switch setup later after I have gone insane from the opulence of modern keyboardery. As for the lighting, I prefer it off and it was not a selling point to me. If they wanted it to be, the keycaps being opaque was the wrong call, as the (seemingly impressive) lighting system becomes a kind of disinterested back-glow. I'm a touch typist so I could care less. Notable the F and J key nibs are somewhat subtle, I would prefer them to be just slightly more pronounced. Despite being a touch typist, I find myself using my wrists more and seeking more verticality in typing, I think also simply an affect of its aesthetics, though perhaps it is that the keys somehow feel almost too large (their unique sculpting probably adding to this) so I feel I need to move more than I would otherwise, but this could all come with familiarity and habitual use. A note on a strange limitation I found was that the function keys default to non-function key functions (ex brightness, volume), and one has to download and install new firmware to remedy this very specific thing. This was honestly almost a complete deal breaker, and I only saw it after I received the unit. In the end perhaps my ideal would have been the version without the function keys, in brown or red switches, just the straight Air60 model as a simple dedicated keyboard for prose or journaling. For that it would offer a unique (and dare I say fun?) experience. I am still intrigued and excited by the board, purely on its aesthetics and form and the experience it offers in typing, and it stands out among many of the others I have collected for its design - so I am happy to have supported NuPhy and will be curious to see what they continue to do in this field. Ideally I would rate this 4.5 but will give it a 5/5 to promote it over a 4/5, given those two options. ... show more

  • A Great Keyboard, and Thank God it's Hot-Swappable
Color: Gateron Red Switch
The media could not be loaded. Let me start off first by saying I accidentally ordered this Keyboard with the Gateron red switches, and I really don't like linear switches all that much. So, while my typing experiences aren't (for me) ideal, I'll try not to skew that too much. Things I Love: I love the aluminum top/switch plate, and I dig the translucent bottom plate. It adds a little bit of fun to the aesthetic, as do the side lights. The keycaps are both very pretty and a nice, textured PBT Material, though the fact the aren't shine through somewhat dampens my joy at the RGB. Still, way better than the ABS keycaps you'll find on other boards. The sound is nice and thocky, though it's a little loud, and it gets a little hollow around the middle of the board; stabilizer ping isn't very noticeable, and the switches themselves lack much in the way of discernable spring noise. Connectivity! Want bluetooth? Got it. Need 2.4ghz wireless? Got it. Wanna run it wired? Unlike a certain logical technical company doesn't include on their similarly specced board. Things I hate Red switches. Admittedly, this is my fault, since I ordered the wrong product, but I really don't like light actuation linear switches. The typing errors are real. That said, too, the flat keycaps do take some getting used to, especially if you're coming from a full size/height board with OEM or cherry profile caps. Build quality. It's generally very good, but I think there are some areas of improvement. I think a heavier switch plate/top frame and a heavier base plate would eliminate most of the hollowness in the middle, and reduce the (admittedly minute) flex present in the board. Adding denser foam (if there even is any right now) between the PCB and the plate would help even out the sound as well. Shine through keycaps would also be a huge improvement, but that's not a requirement. Also, for some reason the switch comes out with the spacebar when I pulled it up to swap with the included brown switch? That seems like not a good thing. I actually swapped between two different keyboards to write this review; the Nuphy Air75, and the Logitech MX Mechanical Mini, and let me offer some conclusions for those who have read this far. The logitech's BT connections seems a little more laggy, but at the same time less prone to drop-outs. I don't know if this is because the MX is equipped with mechanical switches, which I am much more familiar with), or if there really is an issue with the BT on the Air75. I will say the air75 sounds better than the MX Mechanical; the Logitech's spring ping is so loud I can hear it even when I'm leaning back in my chair... with headphone on. I know these two keyboards are kind of the gold standards right now for wireless low-profile keyboards, but I gotta tell ya, I'm not 100% happy with either of them. The Air75 wins by a good margin, but there's enough there that keeps me from giving it five stars, especially considering the price, when a hot-swappable Keychron K3 can be had for less, or the QMK customizable K3 pro for about the same price. All in all, a good keyboard with room for improvement. I'd be very curious to see what a gen 2 of this can accomplish. ... show more

  • Got fried after a year and a half.
Color: Gateron Brown Switch
Update: Contacted Nuphy and sent me a new board so I could reuse my switches etc. Original: Let me say first that this is a great keyboard, I used it for gaming, work and what not. Last night left it charging with the usual USB-C charger that I have used before, and use for other devices and I woke up to a dead keyboard with signs of burning. I'm glad it didn't caught fire, could have been bad, but there is clearly signs that something melted inside. ... show more

  • Solid investment
Color: Gateron Brown Switch
I got this keyboard for coding and its been perfect. I was a little annoyed recently because after about a year my t key started being less responsive and one of the keyboard bumpers fell off but then I checked the replacement pack it came with and was able to replace both pieces and now everything works great! The foresight to include a spare switch of each type + small things like the bumpers makes me really appreciate the investment. Awesome job Nuphy! ... show more

  • Keys, lighting, responsiveness are great. Fn keys, foot durability, and battery life not so much.
Color: Gateron Brown Switch
- Function keys only have the alternate functionality out of the box (brightness, volume, etc.) You need to update the firmware to be able to switch to primary functionality, aka actually send F1 to the computer. However, I'm not sure that a linux installer is available so this is worth checking. - The feet tend to come off after a couple months, especially the top ones. There are spares and it's not hard to glue them back on. But they could be higher quality like for example Thinkpad feet. - The battery life is decent but not exceptional. In wireless mode it'll last around 3-5 days with intermittent use. About 24-36 hours of total use. ... show more
