  • Worked good
Color: Kama Citra IPA
Got this for my husband for his bday and he loved it, was easy to use/follow instructions. Arrived in time and intact was a fair price for a starter pack I thought. Smell wasn’t to bad once unboxed and brewing process. I don’t drink but my husband does and he liked the taste once the wait time was over and he could try it. ... show more

  • Good self brew beer.
Color: Kama Citra IPA
It tasted like a lot of IPA brands on the market BUT with the difference being you MAKE IT YOURSELF. It was a nice experience. It made me appreciate beers a whole ton more. The instructions might be a lil confusing but leave enough room for some mistake. even with a few mistakes on my end i still ended up with great tasting beer. I do not know the alcohol content at the end but I do know it turned out great. Sharing it with friends and family was also fun. ... show more

  • Not All Butterflies & Rainbows!🤣 SOLUTIONS in Written Review!🌟
Color: Kama Citra IPA
So, as you can see by the video, the container does leak a bit from the spigot. This makes sense because the pressure builds up in the container. So, just make sure to put something under the container to catch the runoff. I got this Northern Brewer Beer Making Starter Kit for my husband who has been experimenting, trying lots and lots of different beers, commercially made, trying to figure out which ones he likes best. He was Super Excited receiving the kit! So, I would say that it is giftable but there are some things we discovered. Here they are for you: 1. You do need to purchase a hydrometer separately to test the alcohol content. This is important because you must test the alcohol 2 times during the end of fermenting: 2-3 weeks after the start of fermenting, and then again 2 days after the first alcohol percentage test. If the percentage of alcohol changes in 2 days, then you must wait longer for the beer to finish fermenting. If you have a different alcohol level reading the second time you test the beer 2 days later, then it is not finished fermenting. That means that if you bottle it up, it will explode the bottles! So, that’s Important! Unfortunately, that also means that if you drink your beer in less than 3 weeks (uncarbonated), since it would not be finished fermenting by then, it may give you a big stomachache as well. 2. You do need 2 people for the bottling process. You can see why in the second photo. The glass container must be tilted to get more beer out of the container. As you can see, 1 gallon of beer makes, at the most, 8 bottles of beer (4th photo). And in the 3rd photo, you can see the small amount of beer at the bottom of the container that we didn’t bottle because it has too much much residue left in it. 3. You must sanitize everything before beginning and at the end of course for the next batch. The sanitizer that most people use is called Star San. My hubby bought his on Amazon. The reason why this kind of sanitizer is preferred is because it is Fast acting: It sanitizes surfaces in about one minute of contact time. It is a No-rinse sanitizer! It breaks down into harmless byproducts and yeast nutrient, leaving no harmful chemical residue or off-flavors in the beer. It is Reusable: Mixed solution can be stored and reused for a few days if kept in a sealed container and the pH remains below 3.0. 4. This is something Super Important that we found out after getting this kit: Fermentation (yeast converting sugar to alcohol) requires precise control, typically ranging from 45°F–55°F (7°C–13°C) for lagers (so you would need a refrigerator that is used only for fermenting lagers), and 65°F–72°F (18°C–22°C) for ales. The above info definitely made the fermentation have to occur in a completely different area than the one I had set aside in our house! Yes! You can up the alcohol content by adding a 5oz container of priming sugar (dextrose/corn sugar) during the boil for 1 gallon of beer (like this kit). I thought for sure that it would be less expensive if I purchased corn sugar or dextrose in large amounts. Shockingly, it was more expensive to purchase it in larger quantities! It ended up being the least expensive purchasing 5 of the 5oz bags at one time that are called fining sugar.for beer on Amazon. Fining sugar also can be used (actually its typical usage) to prepare your homebrew for carbonation in bottles. The wonderful thing about this starter kit is that it comes with carbonation tablets in the beer kit that comes with it! So, that makes the beer making faster and more convenient. I am saying this because if you use fining sugar for carbonation, for a 1 gal batch, you would combine 1 oz priming sugar with 1.5 cups of water. Bring to medium-high heat on the stove, and stir to dissolve the sugar, boil for 5 minutes, remove from heat, cover and let cool completely. Then transfer your beer into the pot with the priming solution, gently stirring to combine. I think that you can see by those directions why my husband found it so much simpler just to use the tablets! Overall, IMHO from all of the research I did (I’m kinda wild about researching!), this starter kit is the best one for the low price here. And from what I read about other kits, having a glass fermentation container like in this kit REALLY does make a difference in the taste compared to the plastic ones. And yeah, you will definitely purchase a 5 gallon container if you enjoy brewing. However, even though I knew that my husband would enjoy making beer (despite this learning curve), it’s a good idea to start with the 1 gallon container. Because when you’re trying different beers, there will be ones that you probably won’t like. And when that happens, having 5 gallons of a beer that you don’t like is a bummer! At least for us!🤣 Here’s wishing you Great brewing success!🎉 ... show more

  • Great beer kit for beginners!
Color: Kama Citra IPA
I bought this kit last year so my boyfriend and I could attempt to brew our own beer. The kit is great, and we used both the provided written instructions as well as their youtube video to work through the steps. The beer turned out great! We eventually moved across the country and had to leave this kit behind, but we recently purchased one of their five gallon brew kits to start making a larger amount of beer. We will review that kit once we have our beer ready! ... show more

I meant to order their 5gallon kit, but the mobile Amazon app selected this one. Northern Brewer and they worked with me to cancel this and order the 5gallon kit. Can't wait to try their Block party Amber Ale!

  • DO NOT BUY
Color: Kama Citra IPA
Big waste of money. Everything was either broken or not designed the right way. The tubing didn’t fit into where it was supposed to, the airlock was made out of really cheap plastic so it arrived cracked, and the spigot on the jar was too high so bottling was near impossible. Seriously, you’re better off just separately buying bottles, caps, a capper, fizz drops, ingredients and a recipe, and a glass jar with a low spigot. Overall, just a $70 lesson in how to not brew beer ... show more

  • Turned out not great
Color: Kama Citra IPA
Instructions were fairly easy to follow and made about 9 beers. Unfortunately it turned out kinda weird. Technically drinkable but not good, some weird off flavors. I wonder if it's because of chlorine in my water? My water normally tastes great so I felt fine using it. Would have been nice if they included a Camden tablet or something. ... show more
