The Starter Kit That Made Me Feel Like a Brewing Prodigy

The Northern Brewer Essential Brew. Share. Enjoy. Starter Set is exactly what it sounds like: a box full of brewing confidence. I opened it expecting a chaotic pile of tubes, buckets, and regret. Instead, everything was neatly organized like it was assembled by a very polite brewing wizard who respects my time and questionable life choices. This kit basically pats you on the back and says, “Relax, you can totally do this,” while handing you all the gear you need to turn water and grains into something your friends will pretend you didn’t just make in your kitchen. It’s simple, it’s clear, and it makes homebrewing feel less like a science experiment and more like a fun hobby where explosions probably won’t happen. If you’ve ever wanted to brew beer without needing a PhD in Yeast Whispering, this is your kit. Five stars. It turned me from “guy who owns too many pint glasses” into “guy who actually fills them.” Cheers.

Love it!

Homebrewing has been a dream of mine since I was in high school. I like the idea of stovetop chemistry and love cooking, but beer always seemed like it would be a complex, over-the-top project. Having listened to the Rooster Teeth Podcast, where they complained about the stink of the fermenting beer (later discovered to be an infected batch), I waited and waited until we bought a house. Now I know there was no reason to wait. I started brewing at the beginning of November 2016 after reading several books on the subject and doing my due diligence. I got this kit, a 20 oz bottle of Star San, collected bottles from my friends, and got to work. Six months later, I've stopped using the primary vat in favor of a 6 gallon carboy, begun to modify kit recipes, use a hydrometer, and have a few more advanced touches (oatmeal, oaking, custom herb additions etc), and love homebrewing. I've made, to date: Block Ale (came with kit): Was Ok, little watery/weak Stout: Killer good, changed my friend's attitude on homebrewing Vanilla Spiced Porter: Was excellent, didn't last a month after bottling Scottish Stout: Poor lad died when the bottling bucket tipped over, almost causing a divorce German Black Ale: Awesome. Slightly moldy. Seemed to help? Scottish Light Ale: Gross. Keeping it for science. Bourbon Cask Ale: Got moldy, infused with (a lot of) bourbon. Suddenly became delicious. Traditional Irish Stout we called "Boston Tea": Finished on St. Paddie's day...less than a third of batch left the subsequent Sunday afternoon Heavy Porter: Just finished, is crisp, black, and almost chocolatey. The only additions I've made to my overall kit were the hydrometer, the two glass carboys, and a metal funnel. I've done all of the above with just the Northern Brewer kit, and some pre-assembled beer kits from my Local Homebrew store. Worthy purchase indeed.

Can't Go Wrong with This One!

Husband LOVES this. Bought it based on other reviews saying you couldn't go wrong and happily, they were right! My husband is now on his second brew. It does take time and commitment to the process and it will stink up your house on "cook night", but if you have the interest in brewing your own beer and are more than just curious to do it, this kit is a good starting place. The company offers lots of support and information as well as a place to purchase additional brew recipes and supplies. One thing we didn't consider was once it was made how to store it. Duh. Obviously bottles are the answer, so we bought two 24 packs of bottles (it was cheaper through them) and the next kit. My husband also bought a bottle holder, a sterilizer, thermometer, cleaner and some sterilizer solution. He might have bought a few more things that have gone under the radar...I told him he needs to cool it with the spending already. He still WANTS a hydrometer to measure alcohol content. Anyway, you really do need the supplies if you plan to make more brews. :D So keep in mind that the starter kit is wonderful, but you will definitely see some additional expenses after you buy it. That said, my husband really enjoys the process (he is a reader and spent some good time learning about the different stages of brewing and how to avoid various newbie mistakes. AND, in case you are wondering, the first batch came out very good tasting which is a big bonus and incentive to keep making more.

Ok, so I will admit I have never brewed a batch of beer before buying this kit. I did some basic reading on beginner beer kits and this was one of the top rated kits. After a lot of contemplation on why I should try brewing beer in the first place, I decided to give it a shot during the COVID lockdown to see what happens. I will first state that here I am about 3 months later, and the Block Party Amber Ale that came out with the kit came out awesome with a small addition of about a pound and a half of honey added to it. I never saw active fermentation and even ordered an extra pack of yeast to pitch into it two weeks into fermentation and let this sit for 6 weeks before bottling it. So, the beer came out great and everyone was surprised, especially me after expecting to poison myself after reading about that south African couple. Now let's discuss why I took off a star for this kit although the kit has served its purpose and I have so far brewed 6 batches, bought 4 more kits from my local homebrew supply store (that I didn't know we had before I picked up this addictive habit). So I have been bit by the beer bug after picking up this kit which has most of the stuff you need. First of all you need to be careful. Northern Brewer has a few different kits listed on Amazon and their website. They are very similar and some of the pages on their site are somewhat misleading if you do not pay exact attention. I thought I ordered the kit with the brew kettle in it and did not, so I received a kit with no pot and was pretty shocked to not have a pot. For a little bit more money I could have gotten the kit with the pot and the hydrometer which I ended up buying separately. Luckily I snagged and have been able to borrow a 4 gallon kettle from a friend that I have been able to put into use. The second reason for knocking off a star are the discrepancies with the instructions. I printed out the instructions for the block party amber on the Northern Brewer website. The instructions there are different then the ones that come in the box. This generated some heated arguments that escalated as did the alcohol consumption on brew day. Not a huge deal, but definitely confusing if you are a noob trying to brew with other noobs trying to brew. The last thing that I want to point out, and the reason for the title of this review, is that there is lot more to know about brewing then what limited instructions come with the kit. For one, you need to have a basic understanding of fermentation and the importance of temperatures to achieve proper fermentation. Is it as easy as boiling some stuff up on the stove, throwing some mold in it and letting it sit in your closet to drink it a month later, and get drunk? Well, kinda, but if you don't want to be questioning whether it works or not, I would do some additional reading into brewing before giving it a try. I watched a ton of youtube videos and reviews, and even the Northern Brewer videos led me to believe there was kettle in this kit. I would also recommend reading John Palmer's book 'How to Brew' which you can find on line as well. In the instructions that came with the kit, there is no mention to fermentation temperature control or the proper temperatures to pitch your yeast and what temp the mixture should be stored at. These are all things that you should have a basic understanding on. That is it for my opinion and I have learned a tremendous amount since experimenting with this kit and still use the components that come with it, but there is more information out there if you want to be successful at home brewing. This is a great way to dip your toe into the beer game if it is something you want to try out but there is a vast amount of knowledge out there to better your understanding. I will at some point pick up another Block Party amber ale kit to brew and see if it turns out differently then the first one now that I have a bit more experience under my belt.

Awesome Starter kit
Size: Essential w/ Block Party
Right out of the box, they include to everything to get started including the giant kettle to cook it in and a full recipe. They give you the step by step instructions, manuals, tools and equipment to brew your own beer at home at a starter level. Now the Deluxe Kit includes two beautiful glass carboys, but this has 2 plastic buckets instead. BUT they have the kettle, which the Deluxe kit doesn't include, so there's that. Not only is it fun to brew your own beer at home and play Brewmaster, but it's really inexpensive. Once you get a few batches under your belt, I would recommend getting the deluxe kit with the glass carboys to step it up. Nonetheless, this is incredible starter kit for brewing beer at home with friends. Cheers to that.

Great kit to start brewing your own beer!
Size: Essential w/ Block Party
This is a great basic starter home brewing kit. I brewed the Block Party Amber Ale that came with the kit and it surpassed my expectations... delicious! A couple of notes: buy some extra sanitizer because the kit only comes with enough to make 1 gallon. I was expecting the fermentation to bubble co2 from the airlock. After a week I did not think it was fermenting as there was no bubbling so I added another pitch of yeast that I bought from a local brew shop. What I now realize is the bucket will allow gas to release around the edges as it is not sealed air tight locked with a gasket hence the lack of bubbling activity. Also, don't bother opening your bottled beer after just one week. Give it at least 2 weeks to bottle condition even though it is hard to wait. The finished product is great and may even improve some in the coming weeks if it lasts that long. I bottled close to 50 (12 ounce) bottles. Enjoy!

Comprehensive Kit
Size: Essential w/ Block Party
EDITED REVIEW: Responsive customer service and great supporting materials on youtube. It would help if the buckets were clearly labeled "primary" and "bottling" to avoid confusion with what is shown in some of the video the instructions. This kit includes important items other kits seem to lack: Long spoon, large steal pot, sanitizer, funny instructional YouTube videos*, bottling tube and syphon, bottle capper, and a bullet proof recipe.** You will need a thermometer (we just used a meat thermometer and it was fine), extra bottle caps, extra sanitizer, your own bottles. In my research, few kits come with these items and you won't need things like bottle caps or extra sanitizer until the second stage of brewing (2 weeks later). So, out of the box, you should be ready for your first full afternoon of activity. We initially thought the lids to the buckets didn't fit because they require a good deal of force before they snap on. When we called, customer service gave us the benefit of the doubt and overnighted us a replacement lid and some extra sanitizer. We found this replacement lid to be the same size and just made our first batch without a sealed lid. To our surprise, the recipe was so robust, the beer still came out 'okay.' We later learned that the lids fit (our bad). You just really REALLY have to work them on their with your knee or a handstand or something. Flash-forward a few weeks later and my Dad is already working on his next brew using the same kit. I also enjoyed the experience so much that I've since purchased my own smaller (apartment friendly) 1-gallon brew kit from another supplier. Yay Brew Family! * YouTube instructions mean you can drink beer while you brew instead of relying on long recipe sheets you'd otherwise have to be sober enough to read! ** No really, you are going to want that larger pot and that longer spoon. You're probably thinking, "meh - Can't I use that lobster pot and that long soup spoon?" No - we learned that beer is very easy to boil over. Plus, is hacking a solution to moving large volumes of boiling hot liquid reeeeally how you want to save your money? Skimp on a thermometer before you pass-up the pot and spoon.

First Time Brewing
Size: Essential w/ Block Party
This is my first time brewing. Everything is included in this kit to make 5 gal (46 bottles -12 oz ea) of Amber Ale EXCEPT the bottles. You will need pry top glass bottles. Here was my time schedule: 4 hrs for brewing day 3 wks for fermentation (bubbling stopped after 4 days, but I let it set for 3 wks to clear) 2 hrs for bottling day (messy) 2 wks for carbonation PROS- Fast shipping, fresh ingredients. The online video instructions were very helpful and needed. The telephone support was good. Sturdy, reusable products. Good tasting ale (but with homebrew taste), not bitter, clear body with medium foam that doesn’t last long. CONS- The laminated two page instructions weren’t detailed enough. The 2 oz of sanitizing powder only makes two gallons of solution (big problem), and is different than the starsan liquid used in the online video. The lid is difficult to pry off the fermenter bucket, use a screwdriver. The room temperature for fermentation is not specified. The amber ale instruction says optimum yeast temperature is 57° – 77° F. But fermentation stopped when room temperature dropped below 65°F. Bottle capper is tricky, press too hard it’ll break off the bottle top, too light it won’t seal. Two weeks later, three caps leaked, when I pried them off, the bottle top broke, the ale inside was flat.
