  • Fabulous extra magnification for a macro lens
I bought the TC-14E II to match up with my Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED macro lens so I could get even closer while shooting small creatures and flowers. The results have been amazing. You will always need to use a tripod to avoid camera shake at this close distance, and on top of that don't take photos by pressing the button, as any slight movement will be magnified by an extra 1.4x - especially with a macro lens, so set the timer delay or better still use a remote or release cable. It takes practise getting crystal clear focus, so don't rely on auto focus at all. I always use aperture or shutter priority so that everything can be fine tuned manually. I contemplated getting either the TC-17E II (1.7x) or TC-20E II (2.0x) as well, but thought there was a possibility of too much image degradation. I stuck with the TC-14E II, and am really satisfied with it as there's always a trade-off between magnification and quality. The TC-14E II lowers the light sensitivity of a lens by just one F Stop, therefore an f2.8 lens turns into an f3.8 lens - which is still pretty fast for most purposes. Another real bonus of the TC-14E II comes when shooting in low light conditions. Allowing for wider apertures and faster shutter speeds, this enables subjects to be frozen so reducing motion blur. This teleconverter now never leaves my macro lens, I love it! ... show more

  • but want to send out my good news from work I have done just this morning
For all you bird lovers, please take note, just getting started on my evaluation, but want to send out my good news from work I have done just this morning. I recently purchased a new AF-S Nikkor 200-500 mm lens, plus I bought a very good condition Nikon 1.4X Teleconverter (TC-14 EII) on Amazon too. I bought both products here on Amazon at a very good value. As you know Anazon works with other Global vendors and the 1.4X teleconverter was from a vendor in Japan, a used VG quality and they shipped it in a weeks time so do not worry about their customer service. Too, when I received the used teleconverter it was a s good as brand new, no wear of any kind so their quality rating is just excellent. Just about the time I received my new Nikkor 200-500 mm lens Nikon came out with a tech brief foir this teleconverter works well on this lens, hence today, I just did some wildlife shots and have learned a great deal, more to learn, but when using my zoom on my D7100 from 200-500 the auto focus on a cloudy morning worked very fast and my images are very sharp. With this lens, on my D7100 and using the teleconverter now my magnification is a stunning 364-910 mm. I have a lot more work to do and I will update my review more as I generate more data, but just know this gives you birders a great value here on Amazon. Amazon's Japanese vendors are excellent and of the highest quality. I am so excited about my New Nikkor 200-500mm and now with the 1.4X Teleconverter I have even more range and magnification. Here is an image of a blacked cap chickadee as example at 728mm. Jimmy Springett wildlife painter ... show more

  • Extra Reach
I purchased this to match up with the AF 200-400mm f4 VR Nikon to give me that bit of extra reach when photographing birds. It does just that. The resolution of the image is near perfect. However when shooting at f4 in low light situations the auto focus has some trouble. At 5.6 and above it does fine. I opted for the 1.4 over the 2.0 as I shoot in low light more often than not. The extra magnification wasn't worth the light loss. I wasn't impressed by what I had heard about the 1.7 although a few pros match it with the above lens. This is a nice addition to my camera equipment. I am very pleaed with it at this point ... show more

  • Didn't perform well with the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G ED VR Nikkor Zoom Lens
I purchased this teleconverter to extend the reach of the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G ED VR Nikkor Zoom Lens. The purchase was made based on very good reviews from photographers using this teleconverter with the 70-200 f/2.8. Unfortunately there was a marked reduction in image quality with the f/4 lens and I ended up returning the teleconverter for a full refund. ... show more

  • It Didn't Fit My Lens.
This is an excellent Nikon teleconverter that fit my D7000 as advertised. What is not clear in the product description is that the teleconverter must fit the lens you are using also. I have a Nikon 18-300mm lens and it didn't fit. I called Nikon tech support and they told Nikon doesn't make a teleconverter to fit my camera-lens combination. My advice is to check Nikon before you buy this item. Note: The one-star rating is to get someone's attention to not make the mistake I made. ... show more

  • Pricey, but worth it.
I use this with 20-200mm f/2.8, 200mm f2.0 and 200-400mm f/2.8. In my opinion it adds more than a stop to the shot, but in daylight it works fantastic with very clear results throughout the image. At night events I only use it with the 200 f/2.0 with good to very good results in poor lighting such as night football and other youth sports. I also have the TC-17E, but that is strictly a daylight device. These are not the optimum way to get longer telephoto shots, but even at this price it beats the price of decent 500mm and 600mm lenses with very good results and way more easy to tote to remote locations. ... show more
