  • D3200 (refurbished) : impression
First of all: as somebody already said in this internet universe, I rate "refurbished" higher than "new": the refurbished was kindly tested for us by a volunteer, and returned to the factory for cleanup. This is my ultimate strategy with cameras as well as laptops. Nowadays, parts are cheap for either on ebay, so there is no need to rely on service, at least by the time China closes its special inventories of spare electronics parts. My immediate impression from D3200 was disappointment. I looked at the display max-zoomed, and the picture did not look right. Worse than my D5100, that I left on the train seat 3 weeks ago, with 135/F2 on it. But then I downloaded pictures, and saw. It is frightening, the amount of detail. It is simply not the picture you saw when composing. It's like photographing with microscope, as you by habit blow up the picture on the screen to 100% and scan around. D5100 felt halfway of this phenomenon, you went to the waters but did not submerge. So what is this toy good for? I already have my mind split: it would be so relieving to forget about this and just have a nice camera with few MP and watch on the screen what you composed and maybe print. But with this camera I can't get rid of feeling that I'm not composing, but throwing nets into deep waters, and we will see what it shows afterwards, when the nets are pulled out! What can I say? This camera is outstanding toy, I'm not sure what is it good for in the end, but there is no way I could say I havent been impressed. Note added: I have my own measurement of ISO sensitivity, and I rate this sensor to ISO 100 in SHADOW areas for myself (don't worry at normal daylight condition!). Really, that's when I stop seeing these white-yellow or green-blue ghost patterns looking like surface wetting. I have an easy way around though: turn off the color by setting the camera to monochrome. So what. There are probably borderline situations when you want to see the color and it's hard but possible to get it right; but in most situations when you see the color shows artifacts, it is not relevant and BW will do. (Though some people dream in color, I hear.) D5100 was not better at 100% crop in this respect, D3200 would definitely be better if pictures were viewed at the same output size. This is not meant to say that pictures at 3200 or even 6400 if you like are useless! ... show more

  • Good for stills, less good for video, and terrible wifi
I've only had the camera a week and will write a more complete review in a few months. I've owned Nikons for decades, both film and digital and this is the first one that's disappointed me. The problem is not the camera itself, it's Nikon's WU-1a wifi adapter (a separate purchase). I specifically wanted to use the D3200 with wifi as a monitor for filming video, but the adapter is completely useless for this purpose. I am very disappointed that Nikon would foist such a weak product on its customers. I ordered the D3200 from Beach Camera Same Day Shipping. Beach Camera is an authorized Nikon dealer and so I was confident they would not ship a grey market Nikon. As promised, the camera was shipped quickly, the next business morning. However shipping was very frustrating. Beach Camera is on the East Coast. I am on the West Coast. The camera traveled as far as Nevada quickly but then sat in a Fedex facility for nearly four days without moving. It was very frustrating wanting to try out my new camera but checking every day and seeing it not moving. For the price I paid for this D3200, it's a great deal - people are paying nearly as much for it used on eBay without a warranty. I won't be able to use it for video the way I planned because of the wifi problem, but I can use it as a still photography replacement for an old D40, which I'll sell. However it leaves me still needing a satisfactory video camera. Aside from the wifi problem, the biggest frustration with the D3200 for recording video is the 20 minute video recording time limit. I knew about it before ordering it (all still cameras except some Panasonics have similar restrictions) and I am looking into the firmware hack from nikonhacker.com that removes the time limit. This would make the D3200 much more usable for video. If I decide to use the hack, I'll of course wait until Nikon's 90 day warranty expires. I'll write more after I've owned the D3200 long enough to write a meaningful review. ... show more

  • Refurb Much Good
I bought the Nikon-refurbished D3200 model. Camera arrived in a plain white box with "Nikon" printed on it. My camera was absolutely like new; no scratches, dings, or even fingerprints. It came with all the normal accessories...charger, battery, strap, instruction book, eyepiece covers, etc. I love the camera, and have tried to test every function...it works perfectly. I am a very experienced film SLR and compact digital hobbyist. When you step up to even a simple DSLR like this one, there are many, many more functions to deal with to get off the automatic mode. And, why would you buy this unless you wanted to go to the next level? This is nothing you want to lug around without a good reason. Some of the features are hidden or somewhat obscure, even if you carefully peruse the menus (example: fine-tuning the White Balance), but it's simple to do once you figure out the "trick." It's also easy to think the camera is defective in some way unless you have carefully studied the manual. At least by reading the manual you will be aware of the possibilities if you happen to get stuck. I bought the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens to go with this camera, and I am extremely happy with it. Some of my favorite features of the system are nearly-instant focusing, the convenient thumb wheel which lets me breeze through aperture setting, the large easy-to-read mode selector, and the beautiful screen which is much-improved over the D3100. Things I don't like: two function buttons tucked out of sight on the front left of the camera, it's way too easy to accidentally enter Live-View mode, and the plastic mount on the lens I selected (I can only blame myself for that). Also, the 90-day warranty on Nikon refurbished products is pretty skimpy. All in all, I am thrilled with this purchase. ... show more
