  • A Camera For All Seasons
Color: Black
I bought this refurbished Nikon S8000 (a black one) since Nikon discontinued it so quickly. I bought a new one when they first came out (a red one)and was so pleased with it I wanted to get a spare. My normal camera is a Nikon D700 which is huge, cumbersome, and downright useless when spur of the moment pictures arise. The Nikon 8000 can focus down to 1/4"! If I can't read some fine print, see a scratch in a gem stone, or really really get in close to something to get a shot, I take a photo with it. It has 14.1 meg pixel resolution and a 10x optical lens with noise reduction software. It is my perfect pocket point and shoot. I can print some awesome enlargements (20 x 20 and above) from the jpeg files and it is super in low light levels. Yes, it has some drawbacks. But you learn rather quickly to get around them. The flash is sort of in the wrong place especially since I am left handed. However, remembering where it is and staying out of its way is the only way to go with any camera. It is also a bit delicate and the leaf shutter over the lens when it is closed can get a little sticky. So I always keep my hands and other things away from it and use a puff of air to clean it out after a couple of uses. Thus it has never failed me. I bought an extra battery and use a 32 gig SD chip so I can take photos forever if need be. Yes my Nikon D700 can take marvelous RAW and JPEG photos at extremely low light levels at up to 8 fps. However, to have a superb point and shoot that takes photos at .75 fps and fits in my shirt pocket more than overcomes the trade offs. I use them both. I love them both. Raymond ... show more

  • first nikon is a disappointment
Color: Black
CONS:poor positioning of flash-poor positioning of stereo mics. would charge ONLY from factory 120v/usb charger or a computer with Nikon software installed; a real bummer if you need to recharge in the field. would not work with 12v/auto powered usb charger like my other usb devices. BIG TIME BUMMER, after three days it failed to turn on and would not take ANY type of charge. I'll try another brand! PROS:credit where credit is due. great pictures. excellent lens. LOW level light photography was surprising-almost like NIGHT VISION, poor quality but it produces images. ... show more

  • Nikon Coolpix S8000 I am buying a 2nd one for me
Color: Red
I bought the Nikon Coolpix S8000 for my sister. We went on vacation. I brought my Fujifilm Finepix J38. After a day of seeing the quality between these 2 cameras I left the Fujifilm in the room and we shared her Nikon Coolpix camera for the rest of the vacation. I cannot say enough good things about her camera. Every picture came out great - it would not let me take a bad picture. We did many close up zooms, outdoor, indoor, evening low light - all came out amazingly good! It is very easy to use. Aim, shoot and it does the automatic adjustments to create very clear, crisp correct brightness pictures. Yes, it took a bit to remember to not put my finger on the flash but was easy to hold the camera without needing to have my finger on top of the camera. I think it must have a much better/bigger flash than most subcompacts so it probably needs to be on top for the space? The 10x optical zoom is amazing! There were things at a distance I could not see until I aimed the 10x on the area and was surprised to discover things in the distance. It is light weight and small enough to easily take with us. I had it in my pocket alot and had to remember to let my sister use it, as it is her camera - smile. When I complete this review, I am immediately going to order one for me. The video quality is also amazingly very, very good. I recommend buying a 16 gig memory card. She took alot of video (sorry don't know how much time total) and we took over 400 pictures and the card still was only about half full. We used it for 8 days taking many pictures every day. I highly recommend the Nikon Coolpix S8000. ... show more

  • Mixed results
Color: Black
I've owned only Canon brand cameras for the past 10 years or so. I was looking to upgrade my SD880IS to something with HD video capture and a longer optical zoom than the typical 3-4x found in the Canon slim cameras. I decided to give the Nikon S8000 a try. Results are definitely mixed. The most important feature of any camera is its ability to capture great still images, and the S8000 is absolutely superb in this respect. At full 10x optical zoom, it captures breathtaking images. Very few slim cameras offer this level of optical zoom, one of the main features I was seeking. Unfortunately, the HD video capture doesn't enjoy the same success. I found that an annoying high frequency whistle accompanies all video recording when playing back on my computer, something I never encountered with my Canon products. Some might describe what I'm hearing as a tinniness to the sound. In order to use video captures from this camera, I'll have to post-process the video to filter out the frequency of the whistle sound. Also, the HD video didn't seem smooth, and it kind of had the effect of being captured at a slower fps rate. A design issue I found with the S8000 was that the pop-up flash is inconveniently placed. Often when the camera needed to engage the flash, my left pointer finger was resting on top and prevented the flash from lifting. Nikon likely foresaw this as an ergonomic design problem, and the camera issues an onscreen message to the user saying that the flash was unable to deploy. Would have been more convenient for the user if Nikon had integrated the flash into the camera body. The negatives on the video capture performance and the flash placement, the S8000 does take beautiful still images. If you plan to do mostly still shots and want a slim camera with lots of optical zoom, the S8000 would be a great choice. If you plan to use the S8000 often for video capture, which I was hoping to do, then perhaps wait until Nikon issues a firmware update for the S8000, or perhaps wait until the next post-S8000 release from Nikon. Canon seems to put out new camera models every year, but I don't know Nikon's plans for their product releases. If Nikon fixes the noise in the video capture, then my rating would be at least 4 stars, perhaps even 5 stars. ... show more

  • Nice Camera, yet not what I had hoped for
Color: Champagne Silver
I got this camera for my birthday last month and wanted something with a zoom that would be comperable to my SLR. I found it in this little camera. I wanted the ease of a point and shoot with some capabilities of the zoom of my SLR. I have a Pentax *ist D that I've had for almost 5 yrs now and I love it....but it's sometimes not so easy to haul around on trips and things. This camera does really great shots IF you know what you're doing. There are so many settings that it takes a little getting used to! It's not a difficult camera to work, but the settings weren't what I was used to. It's not so great at low light pictures with much movement (i.e. I shoot alot of bands in bars & concerts) it has alot of noise and distortion, but for good light it does great pictures. Outdoors or indoors it does a great job! The video is good quality. I've been so used to my older video camera with the shaking while shooting that it was a nice surprise when it had the video stability. People see the videos and say 'Wow! You've got a pretty steady hand!' then I have to laugh! I've done some videos with my kids' school concerts and things, they seem to turn out really well. All in all, this is a good little camera....but don't be fooled with it's high speed manual zoom....it's not the same as an SLR, but it will work for those occassions I need to pull it out from my purse! I read the reviews before buying and there are also a few things I would like to note... The shadows in all of the pictures that people keep talking about, I don't understand. I have YET to see that in any of my pics! The flash is DEFINITELY in the wrong spot! Although I just push it back in when I don't want a flash anyway. They should have made it a stationary flash instead of pop-up. There are plenty of things that make this camera worth the price! The 14 MP photos make it easy to crop/zoom without distortions...so what you can't do with the camera, you can with the editing. It's worth the $$. I had to see for myself...maybe you should too! ... show more

  • GREAT Auto Focus Camera
Color: Red
I purchased a $400 Canon auto-focus, image-stabilizer camera about 2 1/2 years ago and hated it from "Day One." My husband claimed it was "operator error," until he tried changing every setting to see if he could get it to take decent pictures. We finally gave up and bought a new camera about one month ago: the Nikon S8000 from amazon.com. I couldn't be happier. The pictures are awesome with or without the telephoto. Unlike my Canon, the Nikon takes nice pictures in low light situations, or when shooting into the sun (with flash turned "on.") The controls are very intuitive and I like the "scene" feature to tell the camera if you are taking a portrait, landscape, night portrait, indoor shot, beach/snow, sunset, dusk/dawn, night landscape, close-up (such as a picture of a flower), etc. The only negatives I have found are the placement of the flash (as noted by previous reviewers); it's in an awkward place where some people would normally place their left index finger to hold on to the top of the camera. I also find that the LCD screen is very hard to see in bright (outdoor) light, even when adjusted to the brightest setting it can be. However, I can live with a few minor inconviences as this camera takes just awesome pictures! I have always loved Nikon cameras and wished my husband had NEVER talked me into the Canon. After two+ years, I am finally ENJOYING photography again! UPDATE -- JULY 21, 2010: I just returned from an Alaskan cruise and am still in love with this camera. My pictures are incredible and the various scene selectors were very helpful. I would encourage anyone purchasing this camera to also buy a second battery (and keep a fully charged second battery on hand at all times). When you receive the low battery indicator, you only have about one or two more photos you can shoot, so there's not a lot of warning that your battery is low. I charged up both of my batteries every night while on the cruise (took 500 pictures in seven days) so I was always ready for a full day of sightseeing and picture taking. ... show more

  • Great Camera! Nikon Factory Repaired - STILL HAPPY!!
Color: Champagne Silver
UPDATE JUNE 2012: I bought the 2-year Nikon Extended Warranty NIKON COOLPIX 2YR EXT WARRANTY back in July 2010 with my Coolpix S8000....I figured it's $2, I'll give it try. My S8000 started acting up with a mind of its own....so I had nothing to lose. I'm here to tell you it's TOTALLY WORTH IT!!! I was at 22 months with my S8000, sent it in for repair (to the factory) and they took care of everything! Covered new parts, labor, cleaning and return shipping (I had to pay shipping to get it there). Mailed it to them May 29, got it may June 11. I couldn't be happier!! Doesn't matter who the seller is, they just need proof you bought extended coverage and that it's within the covered range. ALSO, now that I have a couple years with this camera, still very happy, but I wish it had a "sports" mode to choose like their S3300 and other camera's I've owned. Other than that, I still love this camera! ORIGINAL REVIEW: I bought the S8000 having had Olympus Stylus 740 and C50 Zoom camera's. The Nikon LCD view finder is BY FAR BETTER to see in bright light conditions than the 740 and C50. Yeah, it could be better, but it's night and day compared to Olympus. Nikon recommends a Class 6 or higher SD card for the S8000 for faster data writing (within the camera). I bit the bullet with a Class 10 8GB SDHC by Sandisk ($50). To torment myself, I compared my classless regular 2GB SD card to see how much slower the data writing process was. With the camera at the highest setting (14M* 4320x3240) and outdoors, it took 1 picture every 3 seconds with either card. (For comparison, my 740 set at SHQ 3072x2304 took 1 picture every 11 seconds). Then I tried recording in HD. I'm not sure I can really see a difference using the fast and slow card! Maybe I'm not under the right conditions to see a difference, but now I question biting a $50 bullet. The 2GB card was a freebie from my local MicroCenter store.....would have been $6 purchased outright. I discovered 1 minute of HD video = 62MB for a quicktime movie. In my situation (basically shooting pictures), a slow card (less than Class 6) probably would have been fine. Live and learn. Bought the "ZipKit" ($25 with shipping) to accessorize the camera....what a great deal! The kit comes with a USB2.0 SD Card Reader that boosts transfer time. 100MB of pictures took 16 seconds with the USB on the camera, but using the USB Card reader it dropped to 7 seconds with a Class 10 SDHC card, and 8 seconds for a classless SD card. The reader is the way to go. Obviously Nikon's recommendation for a Class 6+ SD card has nothing to do with getting pitures off of the camera. CASES: the Olympus 202066 Neoprene Case fits this camera better than the 740 it was designed for! It's not tight and there's room for a couple extra batteries. I read concerns for the Nikon hard shell case and held off. Glad I did because I would get another 202066 if I ever wear out the Velcro. Overall I'm happy so far. I'm wondering about battery life. With my 740, battery life was the weakest link. I was lucky if I got 3 hours (250 pics) per OEM battery (far less with non-OEM batteries). For the S8000, I'll know in August... ... show more

  • I had high hopes…. I had high hopes….
Color: Black
If I could leave ZERO stars I definitely would. I bought this camera last September, in hopes of starting a YouTube channel or taking more photos, but I was sadly mistaken. First of all when I received the camera, I quickly saw that it had some defects on it. The shutter clicker on mine, was broken and it doesn’t lift, and on the lens, it also has black spots from damage. I immediately went to return the camera, and it’s been MONTHS since I have heard an update. I bought this while I was overseas, and it is now March of 2026. Bottom line, the camera is bad quality, and I have yet to get some kind of refund. Please whatever you do, do not buy from the Red Cup seller if you want your sanity ... show more
