Description

The Plum COOLPIX B500 Digital Camera from Nikon features a 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor for high-resolution imagery as well as Full HD 1080p video. This sensor's construction utilizes a stacked backside-illuminated design to improve clarity and image quality when working in dimly-lit conditions. The 40x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm equivalent focal range of 22.5-900mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of environments. Further subject magnification can be achieved using the 80x Dynamic Fine Zoom that effectively doubles the camera's reach. The lens also features Vibration Reduction to help reduce the appearance of camera shake when shooting at the longer zoom lengths or with longer shutter speeds. A 3" 921k-dot tilting LCD screen allows image composition from unique angles, as well as image review and menu navigation.

    • Nikon Coolpix B500 - Good camera, but learn the menus before you shoot.

I bought this camera so that I could take better long-distance photos with the higher-power optical zoom, and it works just fine for that purpose. I also wanted a camera that would work on AA batteries, since these batteries are plentiful and can be purchased almost anywhere. The one time that I did go out to shoot some photos with a different camera that used a rechargeable battery pack, I think that I was able to shoot perhaps 50 images before the battery gave out, so after that, I use AA batteries only, until something better comes along. With this camera, I was able to shoot 1014 images and videos with my first set of batteries, and being able to carry several spare sets of batteries gives one peace of mind while shooting photos. This camera has several discrete modes for different situations, such as portrait modes and night-photography modes. The night modes seem to require the use of the flash, which would not be useful at any distance beyond about 20 feet (6 meters) or so. For night photography, I prefer using one of the other modes, then adjusting the light exposure level to adjust the brightness of the image. I would advise new users to familiarize themselves with the various modes, and explore the menu options that are included with each mode. For example, the user can manually adjust the color saturation and the light exposure of the image, but finding this feature requires the user to navigate through the menus, so by all means, do some exploring and learning before going out to shoot some photos. The one issue that I have had with this camera is with the auto-focus when shooting video of moving subjects. In video mode, the auto-focus feature has 2 modes, one of which is a continuous mode that continuously adjusts the auto-focus while shooting video. I would recommend against using this mode, because the continuous auto-focus tends to lose its lock on the subject and causes the video image to lose focus entirely. I would have preferred to see some more manual shooting options, such as the ability to manually adjust the aperture, the shutter speed, and especially manual focus, but one can use the various settings and modes in this camera to compensate, at least most of the time. ... show more

I wanted a camera that took good pictures, without requiring a lot of fiddling with adjustments and without breaking the bank. This camera has filled the niche for me. The camera has several settings that are automatic , which cover different photo situations. The “Smart Scene” is your go to automatic option. It works well most all situations, whether normal or long distance. The “Macro” for up close on small objects works nice too. In the photos I attached, the flower was taken on Macro. This flower was about 3/4 of an inch wide. The lizard in the photo, was about 5-6 inches long and I took the picture from 20 feet away, with the camera set on Smart Scene. I was impressed that it took such a good picture of a small object, from so far away. The zoom is great. The camera isn’t too bulky and the weight is good. I carried it around my neck for three long days of checking out a zoo, an aquarium and a museum. Battery life was good too. I took a lot of pics and never changed batteries. On that note, it uses 4 AA batteries. I like this as opposed to a rechargeable battery, as you can throw extra batteries in your pocket and switch them out n the fly if the camera dies. Here are the cons: The auto focus can take several seconds to resolve itself. Not a deal breaker, but can be irritating. The flash will not auto deploy. You must manually extend it, if you think flash may be needed. I just left it up while inside. Other than that, the camera is great. It took a little practice and trial and error, but after about 45 min, I had it down. I can definitely recommend this camera. ... show more

The camera itself is fine it is the snap bridge software that comes with the camera that is just rubbish. I have owned several of the Nikon cameras and have been pleased with them. They are older and require a cable or removing the SD card for photo transfer. I specifically purchased this camera for the snap bridge software to be able to transfer photos. One minute it would work the next it would not. Uninstalled re-installed. Read forums that other customers were experiencing the same problems and they had just given up and started plugging the camera to the PC or using the SD card to transfer photos. I already own a older Nikon Camera with a Toshiba Flash Air SD that is very slow to transfer photos and the software works slowly on photo transfer. The software interface on the Nikon COOLPIX B500 software was just sad and needs a serious update. I Returned the camera for a refund as it was useless and did not deliver the most important feature of the camera. It's just easier to use my iphone to take photos and use Photosync app to transfer photos to PC or transfer photos from PC to the Iphone within seconds and works every time without any problems. I wasted a lot of time trying to get the Nikon Software to work and was a complete waste. ... show more

This camera is the bomb. It has every feature I wanted, and none that I didn't. It's easy to use and produces beautiful pictures. I'd been so frustrated lately trying to find a simple point-and-shoot that wasn't overloaded with gimmicky features. I used to be a professional photographer and I'd always used Canon equipment (my first was a 1981 AE-1 Program), but lately I've been thoroughly disappointed with the Canon point-and-shoot cameras I've tried. They rely WAY too much on wi-fi and Bluetooth features and tons of onboard software that is buggy, slow, and frequently nonfunctional. I don't need any of that--give me a camera that's geared toward gorgeous photos and simple controls, and just a USB cable for download. (This camera does use Nikon's Snapbridge app, which I have not set up because I don't care.) This is my first Nikon, and all I can say is, what took me so long? It not only takes stunning photos but is a work of art in and of itself. Could not be happier at this price point. ... show more

I am very well pleased!! My husband bought me this camera for Christmas 2019, since he knew I love taking pictures. I didn't use it much at first until we moved out to the country 3 months later...and WOW!! Just Wow!! The pictures are so clear!! My daughter keeps taking my camera to take pictures as well...ha!! The first two pictures and the snake are my daughter's pictures. The only downside is the focus. It seems to either take forever to focus, not focus at all, or you have to switch to several different settings before it finally adjusts. I love the Snap Bridge app and how my pictures go straight to my phone for easy upload. Overall, very easy to use. Takes quality pictures. Battery life is excellent.
