I bought this lens for $250 this summer with my D5300. I have upgraded to a D7200 but will keep this lens indefinitely. This lens is perfect for any kind of photography whether you are a beginner, amateur or even semi-pro, or going from one to the next like me. Auto focus is not the fastest if comparing it to the f/2.8 equivalents, but for the cost its pretty exceptional. 55-200mm is amazing range, and I wish there were f/2.8 lenses with that extra 15mm of width. Portraits, landscape, sports can all be done on this lens with the right camera settings. Only problem is low-light settings. Manual focus becomes your only option in that scenario. Conclusion: Buying this used at anywhere less than $200 is an absolute bargain. Durable from drops, easy to clean. Crisp photos and very easy to get used to. ... show more

I'd actually give this 4.5 stars, but I'm willing to round up since another reviewer gave 1 star when shipped an older version of the lens. (That should be a 1-star against the shipper, not this product. I received the Feb 2015 version of this lens with gold VR and "1:4-5.6G II ED".) Pros: for the price point, this is a very sharp telephoto zoom lens. If you've got the common 18-55mm kit lens, this is the perfect companion for anyone wanting more zoom. The zoom action is smooth and there is no signs of creep since the lens is quite lightweight. VR II seems to work nicely for hand-held shots, although I haven't had the lens for a week, so I haven't taken a lot of shots with it yet. Auto-focus speed seems fine, although maybe I'm more patient than some. Cons: This has a plastic bayonet mount rather than metal, and it only has Auto and Manual focus modes, not the "M/A" which lets you autofocus and then tweak by hand. I guess that's expected as there is a huge price jump to get to a pro lens like the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. ... show more

Used Like New at half price; performance = Great! The first thing I have noticed is that this lens focuses instantly on my D7000! It is instantaneous and silent; you would have a hard time seeing it focus it is that fast! The out of focus areas at F4 are very nice. The overall clarity is VERY good but falls off just a bit at 200mm. Compared to a 18-105 VR the photos from 55-105mm are too close to call. With a better lens you would might see a difference, zooming your view to peep, but those lenses are much heavier! I will use it for landscape and nature walk a bouts but have a higher end arsenal to draw on for follow up more serious photography. D40X results were fine too. I use Large-Basic jpg; I view my photos on a 42" screen at 6'. My IQ score = 4 star. UPDATE: 10-16-2025 I am raising my star level to 4. Very few things in life rate a 5, LOL. The new VRII technology threw me a bit when I first started using this lens as you can actually see it perform in the view through this lens! Update: Dec 10, 2015: My D5100 has the same sensor and processor as the D7000 that I enjoyed for a year so since selling the D7000 and am down to 3 lenes. The Nikon 18-105 is an okay walk around, my Sigma 10-20 Is excellent indoors and for landscape + the Tamron 70-300 with stabilization is wonderful for macro with special lenses attached and great for wildlife but is my heaviest lens. I plan to acquire a Nikon 40mm f/2.8; dedicated for flower photography and maybe some landscape, we will see what Santa says! ... show more

What a great deal! I had almost given up on my Nikon D800. It was not giving me the quality of photos it is capable of, and I had tried to find out what was wrong with it. After testing old lens' with it that were not AF and having good results, I decided to buy a NEW, AF lens.... found this 55-200mm. lens for a GREAT DEAL! For anyone new to DSLR and looking for a zoom lens, this is a must get! It is really cheap, lightweight and compact for a zoom lens, and the VRII does wonders even at 200mm. It may not be the fastest lens, but newer camera body allows for using faster shutter and higher ISO to compensate for the smaller aperture without too much noise (used on D5300, which ain't too shabby). Do note that the focus mechanism only allows for full-auto and manual focusing, there's no manual overwriting of the auto-focus unless you toggle the focus switch to manual. Focus ring is thinner compared to those found on bigger lenses, but that's the trade-off when a lens get this compact. In times to come when one is ready to upgrade to FX or use a better lens, there's 70-200mm f2.8 options from Nikon and Tamron, but priced around $1200 - $1500. For now, I'll be snapping away happily on this little bugger :) ... show more

This is a really good zoom lens, especially for the price. I bought this lens specifically for a trip to Italy and it was so much better than I expected! It's not a great lens for indoor use, low lighting isn't where it shines. But it works very well if you need to zoom in, especially for portraits. That said, I went to a shoot recently and someone had a 55-300, and his shots were SPECTACULAR. Mine were pretty good, but this lens doesn't match up to the 300. If you want a zoom lens that will give you some great quality pictures for landscapes, and even better than average portraits, and you are on a budget, this lens will give you what you need. If you can afford it, bump up to the 300. Otherwise, you'll be very happy with this purchase. ... show more
