  • A great addition to my Z system lenses
I purchased this lens about 1 year ago when it was on sale. The lens is super sharp on my Z7, even wide open @f2.8. It also works well the built in focus stacking feature built in to the camera. I have not done any people portraits with the lens, but I imagine it will be stellar based on what I have seen. The build quality is very good with a metal base, plastic body (keeps the weight reasonable), focus limiter, and programmable function button. The display is a neat feature, but I haven't found it to be super useful, since the info can be displayed on the top camera display. While you may see some cheaper z-mount lenses with a greater macro ratio, I doubt you will find something that has all of the features this lens has, including built in image stabilization. If I have one complaint... it would be the "focus by wire" which is a let down if you like manual focus. This is my first dedicated macro lens, and I am very happy with the lens and results it gives. ... show more

  • Just get it - it’s outstanding
Outstanding lens. This was my 2nd L lens purchase and man what great choice. I put on Z5ii and is stays there. My main focus is on Landscape and Macro and it works for both.

  • My new favorite
I've been in the Nikon ecosystem for far, far longer than I would care to admit, but it's long enough that my previous go-to for macro work is a 55mm f/2.8 manual focus. I've switched to the Nikon Z50 mirroless as my primary camera and am trying to avoid the FTZ adapter, so upgrading to the Z 105mm f/2.8 seemed like a logical next step. I got it today and visited the garden to see what sort of damage that I could create. I'm super impressed by the clarity this lens provides. There's obviously some trial and error getting critical focus at macro distances, but pixels are cheap so filling the SD card is relatively painless. The 105 does great double duty as a portrait lens as well as closeups. Glad that I could get it while the price was dropped by $200, but I would say it's a great value even at full price. fwiw, I paired this with the 62mm Hoya HD3 MC UV filter to provide front lens element protection ... show more

  • Top-of-the-line glass for your Z-mount Nikon
One of the best lenses for any Nikon mirrorless Z user. Makes other decent lenses look weak by comparison. Catch it when it's on sale if you can, but even at full price, you won't be disappointed.

  • AMAZING lens!
I have the Nikkor 85 mm S and 50 mm S and love both of them. But the sharp, crispness of the 105 mm MC is unmatched. The 105 is a bit heavy but since I use it mainly on a tripod, the weight isn’t a huge deal. But it feels solid. Like a super professional lens. The focusing is lacking if used as a portrait lens. But if used as a macro lens, it’s fine. It does do some hunting but does a good job finding the focal points. The versatility of this lens is amazing. Great for macro AND portraits. ... show more

  • Lives up to its promises
I bought a Z mount platform specifically for the S line lenses, and yet again, this doesn't disappoint. I bought this because I found I've been trying to do more "macro" style photography with my regular zoom lenses, which doesn't really work very well. As such, this is my first macro lens. Well, this delivers. My one and only complaint isn't really about the lens itself, it's more about Nikon's website/documentation about the lens. Yes, it technically has a max aperture of f2.8, but that's only achievable when focusing further than about 1.7 meters away. If you get closer than that (which you need to for macro photography), it starts incrementally stopping down. At closest focus, it's maximum aperture is f4.5. After I thought about it for a bit, I realized that's just how it has to be due to how the aperture ratio works, so it makes sense and I'm not upset by it. F2.8 at closest focus would be absolutely ginormous and it would make the lens huge. I just wish the documentation said something about that. Maybe it does and I missed it, but in case it doesn't or in case you missed it too, now you know. (I also have to assume most other macro lenses do something similar, in the same way a lot of zoom lenses have variable max apertures, but I don't have the experience with macro lenses to know.) ... show more
