Frequently asked questions

Battery life depends on the speed setting, weight of the kayak, and water conditions. However, on average, with a suitable battery (e.g., a 12V deep cycle), it can last between 2-4 hours with continuous use on medium settings.

Yes, this motor is designed for saltwater use with corrosion-resistant materials but works equally well in freshwater environments. Regular cleaning after saltwater use is recommended to prolong its life.

The LED battery indicator provides a general idea of the remaining battery life, but it's not highly precise. For longer trips, it's recommended to carry a separate, high-quality battery gauge or monitor.

Installation is straightforward. Secure the motor's transom mount to the rear of your kayak using the clamps provided. Ensure it's tightly fastened and positioned correctly before heading into the water. Always refer to the manual for detailed instructions.

  • Good Motor at a Great Price
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor
I use this motor on my 13 foot fishing kayak. I like it. Runs great. More than enough power. I like the five forward speeds. Gives me good options when trolling. I have had no issues and no breakdowns. Seems very sturdy but is reasonably lightweight. Very easy to adjust the height as needed and tilts up and out of the water with just one button press. ... show more

  • Nice trolling motor for a kayak
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor
Old Review: I bought this trolling motor for my Field & Stream Shadowcaster 123 kayak, and I really liked it, but just felt it was a little too heavy for installing to the side of the kayak, so I returned it and ended up going with a more installed, transom mount solution instead. I do wish I had bought this motor for my canoe instead of the Watersnake brand that I bought, because this motor doesn't need the shaft cut. Although it may seem a little trivial, I like that this motor comes in grey even though it's saltwater rated (which is typically white). New Review: Okay, so my original kayak trolling motor prematurely died on me, so rather than wasting time and money returning it for warranty service, I decided to buy this Newport Vessels NV Series motor again. As you can see from the pics, I heavily modified it for my kayak mount (there goes that warranty). It's incredibly quiet and very fast. For the first test run I was fishing for ~5 hours, covering about 4 miles with the last 2 of the miles being at full speed returning to the launch. I have two small 35AH batteries in parallel and had 70% charge left when I got home and put the batteries on a charger, so this motor is really light on the juice. Although my initial impression was that it was a little too heavy for a kayak (and I still stand by that opinion for side mounting), it's actually fine on the stern. I have the batteries stowed in bow compartment (which is why I chose two small ones rather than one big one), so it balances out the weight nicely. I did add the Bullnose Rudder to it, and it provides an overall big improvement in tracking and turning. It's also nice to just use it as a rudder to provide a little steering when just drifting. Great motor -- works very well and looks good. I'm probably going to buy the same motor for my canoe and pick up the 36-lb version for other smaller kayak. ... show more

  • Great motor at a great price
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor
I put this on my kayak and it works great. I weigh 245 lbs and It's got plenty of power to push me and all my gear around in my pelican catch 120. Only time will tell, but it seems well built and plenty capable.

  • Amazing support
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor
The 55lb is solid! Not too heavy but built strong. All fittings, hardware and mounting brackets are top quality. The motor ramps smooth and quiet with little to no vibration. The controls are easy, intuitive and well calibrated. The handle actually extends which was a huge bonus. Customer support was super responsive and helpful. • Good so far.
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor
I use it on my hunting kayak. I get 4mph on high in a fully loaded sit on top fishing kayak. Super quiet. Low battery drain. Speeds are perfect. Holds up great so far. I've ran it into rocks and trees many times in the dark. Adjustments are clunky for raising and lowering and tilting the unit. A plastic washer sleeve came out, looks like an easy fix. I'd recommend oil where the shaft rotates to turn. ... show more

  • Holly Bat Troller
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor
I have a Klamath 15' with a tiller outboard. The Minkota 55 was doggy with a sucky prop and 36" shaft that was a pain when it was out of the water flipped forward. This 55unit has a bigger much stronger motor. The short shaft is perfect for the Klamath. The three bladder prop kick's ass. Much more powerful and faster than the Minnotsomuch. • Fits nicely on a 15" transom inflatable
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor
I have a Seamax 380 inflatable and have put the 24" shaft 55 lbs. Kayak model on it. This boat takes a 15" outboard with a transom that is actually 15" itself. This kayak motor fits nicely and the propeller unit sits well below the waterline. Still have to test it on the water, but it is low and compact on the inflatable making it easy to control while sitting on the inflated pontoons which is how I use the boat. The handle extension is well designed and probably will mean no additional handle extension will be needed, though I have one in the boat for the gas motor. I admit to not liking the longer shafts as they stuck up too high on the transom and caught fishing lines when standing and fly casting. This lower-profile motor looks to be a much better fit for fishing from a small boat. I'm using a 75ah battery with it but don't know what the battery life will be; it will probably be more than adequate as the motor will be used for short periods, probably ca. 2-3 hours at a time, at a fairly low speed on a lake that does not permit gas motors. The motor is light, ca. 23 lbs., which is a real treat compared to the 4 stroke 87 lb. Tohatsu I use on the boat otherwise. The gray color fits very nicely with the gray inflatable as well. The only apparent disadvantage is that the control unit is not waterproof and has to be protected from rain and moisture. This is a bit of a pain if you store the boat outside as I do so I'm working on finding the right motor cover for it. Right now it's plastic bags and an extra outboard cover fitted over the control unit and incidentally the depth finder next to the motor. ... show more
