Frequently asked questions

Battery life depends on the speed setting, weight of the kayak, and water conditions. However, on average, with a suitable battery (e.g., a 12V deep cycle), it can last between 2-4 hours with continuous use on medium settings.

Yes, this motor is designed for saltwater use with corrosion-resistant materials but works equally well in freshwater environments. Regular cleaning after saltwater use is recommended to prolong its life.

The LED battery indicator provides a general idea of the remaining battery life, but it's not highly precise. For longer trips, it's recommended to carry a separate, high-quality battery gauge or monitor.

Installation is straightforward. Secure the motor's transom mount to the rear of your kayak using the clamps provided. Ensure it's tightly fastened and positioned correctly before heading into the water. Always refer to the manual for detailed instructions.

  • ONE OF THE BEST TROLLING MOTOR FOR THE MONEY
Style: 36lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor Only
I use this on my SeaEagle 285fpb inflatable fishing boat. With all my rods, my tackle back pack, the battery and me on board, this thing can haul my boat rather quick at full speed. The length of the handle is adjustable and the length of the shaft from handle to propeller is perfect for my boat. I primarily use this for freshwater, so I'm not sure how rust resistance the components are. But I do spray them with Corrosion X once a year for protection, just in case. It's very easy to install on my boat and not very heavy. Overall, this is one of the best value for the money when it comes to transom mounted electric trolling motors on the market. ... show more

  • Nice trolling motor for a kayak
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor Only
Old Review: I bought this trolling motor for my Field & Stream Shadowcaster 123 kayak, and I really liked it, but just felt it was a little too heavy for installing to the side of the kayak, so I returned it and ended up going with a more installed, transom mount solution instead. I do wish I had bought this motor for my canoe instead of the Watersnake brand that I bought, because this motor doesn't need the shaft cut. Although it may seem a little trivial, I like that this motor comes in grey even though it's saltwater rated (which is typically white). New Review: Okay, so my original kayak trolling motor prematurely died on me, so rather than wasting time and money returning it for warranty service, I decided to buy this Newport Vessels NV Series motor again. As you can see from the pics, I heavily modified it for my kayak mount (there goes that warranty). It's incredibly quiet and very fast. For the first test run I was fishing for ~5 hours, covering about 4 miles with the last 2 of the miles being at full speed returning to the launch. I have two small 35AH batteries in parallel and had 70% charge left when I got home and put the batteries on a charger, so this motor is really light on the juice. Although my initial impression was that it was a little too heavy for a kayak (and I still stand by that opinion for side mounting), it's actually fine on the stern. I have the batteries stowed in bow compartment (which is why I chose two small ones rather than one big one), so it balances out the weight nicely. I did add the Bullnose Rudder to it, and it provides an overall big improvement in tracking and turning. It's also nice to just use it as a rudder to provide a little steering when just drifting. Great motor -- works very well and looks good. I'm probably going to buy the same motor for my canoe and pick up the 36-lb version for other smaller kayak. ... show more

  • Great trolling motor with superior customer service by Newport Vessels!
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor Only
I bought the Newport Vessels 55 lb. trolling motor on 12/2/2019 for my Lifetime Sport Fisher angler kayak. It’s mounted to the kayak using the Lifetime kayak trolling motor mount made specifically for this kayak sold separately. Powered by a 114-amp hour Everstart Maxx deep cycle marine battery, this Newport Vessels trolling motor provides plenty of power, doesn’t consume a lot of watts, and can troll for hours on the slower speed settings (1-3). At speeds 4-5, your battery range goes down considerably, but that’s true of any trolling motor. It’s quite heavy, so it doesn’t feel flimsy. I usually take it out on the bay, and it handles quite well. I also installed a Bullnose rudder to help improve tracking since the Sport Fisher tracks like a battleship. However, I’d trade stability over speed any day of the week. There’s a battery level display on the trolling motor handle itself, but I wouldn’t put too much faith in it. I also have a battery meter on my Minn Kota Power Center battery box. Starting with a fully charged battery, I’ve never run out of juice! After taking it out a total of four times, I noticed that the motor no longer went in reverse! I had to go to Newport Vessels’s website to seek product support. I immediately received an email response asking me to file a warranty claim. Newport Vessel’s customer service and warranty department are second to none. After sending them proof of purchase, pictures of the motor, and a description of the problem, Newport Vessels completely took care of me. This type of confidence in their products and outstanding customer service is rare in today’s market. My faith in Newport Vessels has been restored, and they’ve earned a lifetime customer. ... show more

  • Too heavy
Style: 36lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor Only
The motor is well built and performs as expected. I use it with a 48 Li-ion shark-fin bike battery with a step-down converter to 12 v and it works well. The one star off is for the weight - for something that goes onto a kayak it is way too heavy. It is completely encased in metal and probably quite indestructable, but for a kayak application is an overkill. Also, a brushed motor in this day and age is really not something that should be made. Plenty of high quality brushless options out there to build out of. Basically it feels like its design is from the early 2000's - well behind the curve. I'm guessing all of this is driven by the cost. ... show more

  • Stopped Paying Big Money
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor Only
Got tired of paying big money for glam trolling motors where the battery alone cost more than most kayaks. Went back to the basics and got more speed and battery life for about 1/4 of the price. This Newport works great. Glad I went back.

  • Great kayak motor with short shaft
Style: 55lb Thrust Pattern Name: Motor Only
I love this little trolling motor. Fits perfectly on my fishing kayak using the built-in transom. Easy to install and take off. Moves the boat a 10-ft fishing kayak at about 4 miles per hour.
