  • Dell XPS 9700
Liked it! Just received yesterday, very will tracked the package delivery status through UPS global network. Great service! Intel 10th generation i9 8 cores 32RAM 1TB hdd, 4K 17” touch screen. Just the battery cannot compare with Apple MacBook Pro, only 4-5hours usage time.

  • Good but not great
The Dell XPS 17 is probably one of the best, Windows based, personal laptop computers that you can buy, there are some many things that Dell did right with this generation of the XPS 17, and at the same time there are so many things that they missed and could have done much better. Let me start by listing all the positives and the features I absolutely love about this model: - Excellent build quality, the chases, the screen, the keyboard, everything is on a apple level of quality, if not even better in some cases, for example the chases feels heavier and more solid. - Screen size and quality - yes, being able to fit a 17 inch screen in a 15 inch frame, sort of speak, is quite incredible, the screen is plenty bright with 400 nits, the resolution at 4K is good, but only if you are a content creator, about that a little bit more later, and last there is touch for those that like that feature on a laptop, personally I am not a fan. - Top level CPU combined with a great nVidia RTX2060 MaxQ - now here we have indeed a great CPU represented by the Intel Core I9 10885H with 8 cores and 16 threads, this CPU can deliver a great productivity and is a very capable gaming chip as well. The RTX2060 MaxQ is also still a very good mobile GPU and is great for video rendering and games as well, but about that a bit later. - Keyboard and touchpad - To me this keyboard and touchpad are one of the best I have used in the last few years, despite the fact that the keyboard is not full size with the numeric pad on the side, it is still very responsive and comfortable to type on, and the touchpad, well is huge and that is convenient. Previous years and versions had an issue with the touchpad being wobbly, but this later version is perfect. - Four Thunderbolt 3 ports, an SD card and 3.5mm headphone jack on board, TB3 to HDMI and USB-A adapter in the package as well, great port selection and all you need for your content creation. - 32GB Ram and 1TB fast Nvme of internal storage - top level components that can get you started with your content creation, video editing and everything else. - Included separate fingerprint sensor for easy access and Windows Hello. Negatives: - The cooling system on board is not capable to effectively dissipate the temperatures produced by the CPU and the GPU - I was forced to disable the Turbo Boost in the bios in order to keep the temps in control, otherwise even the simple tasks were making the whole system heat up fast and the CPU temps were going over 100C almost all the time (and that is with 22-23C room temperature) causing the CPU to throttle. With the TB disabled, the temps were around 80C. - 4K screen - While great for content creation and media consumption, pushing all those pixels can be challenging for the RTX2060 MaxQ, so gaming is almost impossible, unless you are willing to lower all game settings to the minimum possible. otherwise you are looking at 20-25 frames. - Touch screen, maybe is just my personal preference, but not all laptops need to have touch, especially high-level production or gaming laptops. - Battery life - obviously with such powerful components inside, the battery life is expected to be nothing amazing, but I was disappointed. Luckily most of the times I am not using the laptop plugged in as a desktop replacement work horse. - Very expensive, and not only as a laptop, but computer in general. For the price of over $3K you can buy components to build an incredible desktop, even with the component crisis today, same goes for laptops, you can get a top level gaming laptop that can do everything you want. - Having to use the included TB3 to HDMI adapter in order to output easily on a external screen. - The included web camera on the screen doesn't match the price tag of the laptop, the quality is poor and for this price, it should have been at least a 2K camera with good quality. - Because of the poor cooling solution, which btw even with repasting with good Thermal Grizzly past is not improving too much, you can really utilize the potential of all the top-level components. Overall, despite of the high-quality components and a build quality, it’s really hard to recommend this laptop, I think for the price, you would have a lot more and better choices. ... show more

I can only assume the XPS 17 is an awesome machine since I was sent a Chromebook 3100 instead (retail $260.00). And while Amazon is working to fix the issue, I was not able to return and request a replacement since Amazon only has 15 of these machines left. Seeing that I bought one nearly 2 weeks ago, and it wasn't actually shipped to me, they should have an extra one hiding someplace. ... show more

  • Great all-purpose creator laptop
I was looking to replace my old laptop and it came down to a choice between this Dell XPS 17" and the new Razer Blade Pro 17". In a lot of ways, the specs were pretty similar, but Dell's processor was better being a core i9 10th gen. If this Dell also had the newer GeForce RTX 3080 it would have been perfect! If you are looking for a creator laptop in a 17" this is an excellent choice. Of course, there aren't many choices for 17" laptops so you should expect the premium pricing. If you need the extra GPU and CPU power with lots of storage built in it's worth it though. I do a lot of different things on my laptop including video processing (need a lot of storage for all the raw and edited video files), I do 3D rendering and animation (needs a lot of GPU, CPU, and storage), and of course when I'm not working I like to relax by PC gaming. This laptop isn't marketed as a gaming laptop but it performs very well as one. In addition to PC gaming, I've also started VR gaming with an Oculus Quest which can be used as a PCVR device but my old graphics card in my old laptop just wasn't quite good enough to handle VR. This laptop performs spectacularly with PC games and VR games alike. It renders 3D images in a matter of minutes on images that took nearly an hour on my old laptop saving me a lot of time and while rendering this PC is powerful enough that I can still do other things on it while waiting for those renders to finish. The only thing I'm a little conflicted on is that this only has USB-C ports. I know their better for data transfer and charging but at the same time... every peripheral I own is USB-A. Headset... USB-A, mouse... USB-A, keyboard USB-A, webcam... USB-A, microphone... USB-A, USB flash drives... can you guess it? USB-A. It's meant having to buy a lot of adapters and hubs to be able to connect things which adds a lot of extra buk to the desktop space this uses as well as keeping track of additional parts. That part isn't particularly convenient and considering most devices are still being made as USB-A connections I couldn't replace all my peripherals very easily (plus a lot of them are fairly new and were pretty expensive) What I do like about the USB-C ports though it that I can charge my laptop form any of the 4 ports which means I can choose the side that's most convenient and least likely to trip over. The battery life on this laptop so far has been exceptional and lasts a long time even when I'm heavily utilizing GPU and CPU. This laptop also turns on super fast. Even restarts are amazingly quick. Normally, restarting my PC to install updates or whatever took a few minutes. Now it's usually around 30 seconds or less from the time I hit restart to the time it's restarted and waiting for my to log in. I've never had a PC restart this fast and I think it's fantastic. The fan is relatively quiet and really only whirs up when I'm really pushing the GPU. Even then I wouldn't call it loud just noticeably louder. Most of the time I would say the fan is pretty whisper quiet. The 4K screen is absolutely amazing for detailed work in photos and video but I have had issues with some older programs not auto-resizing well to a 4K screen. Some programs I've used had to have some special parameters added to their startup to get them to not look like a teeny tiny little mini window. I don't think it's an issue with any newer programs though and even most older programs auto-scale well. Also this screen is huge! It's viewable space is bigger than my last 17" thanks to their ultra thin bezel but that also means that you can't put a camera cover over the built in camera. The camera itself is only 720p though so personally I'm just putting a tiny sticker over the camera (I don't use the facial recognition of Window Hello) and using an external 4K camera. I found the choice to use a 720p webcam as the built-in in a 4K laptop a little odd to say the least. I would expect at least a 1080p, so it was a disappointing feature. The fingerprint reader is extremely quick and easy to use for logging in and is a feature I've been missing from the last few laptops I've owned. I had it on a previous HP laptop and it was super convenient then so I was happy to find it's a returning feature. The finger print reader is up in the top right which is also a power button that's right on the keyboard. I actually really like this placement as I often end up bumping power buttons on the sides or too close to the screen since I sometimes lightly rest my fingers/hand there. This one is not in a place that I accidently bump so I'm really happy with the power buttons placement. It's also not obvious that it's the fingerprint reader so it's somewhat discreet. Overall, this is an expensive laptop but if you game, do video stuff, and or work with 3D either images or animations this is an all around great laptop that meets the need for probably most creators and gamers (and those who like to do anything and everything between). ... show more

  • This laptop is a beast.
Starting off, I was incredibly impressed with the first impression while opening the box. It looks futuristic. There is not a fragile piece of plastic to be found on this device. It is reminiscent of a space-craft. Turning it on and using it impressed me even further still. The i9 that can surprisingly be found in this relatively small laptop far exceeds any desktop processor I've ever used. Even for something like 3D modeling and rendering, the cpu matches or even exceeds the performance of the RTX 2060 that it also somehow contains. Gaming is entirely possible on this device. Video editing is entirely possible on this device. Any single one of my use-cases are entirely possible on this device. ... show more
