These two reviewers were generally thrilled with the Netgear Nighthawk router. Both praised its increased coverage and high-speed performance, particularly in environments with multiple devices. They pointed out minor setup issues, but these did not significantly affect their overall satisfaction.

Pros

  • 🚀 High-speed performance even with multiple devices
  • 📶 Extended coverage compared to previous routers
  • 💪 Stable connection throughout its use

Cons

  • 😕 Some issues and hiccups during the setup process
  • 👀 No QR code found for easy setup
  • 💼 Potentially annoying additional software offers from Netgear

Should I Buy It?

Based on the consistent praises for its performance and range, the Netgear Nighthawk seems to be a worthwhile investment. The occasional setup frustrations noted do not outweigh its benefits, making it a strong contender for those seeking a high-performing router.

  • Performance is outstanding, setup was somewhat annoying
Size: 25.4 cm x 76.2 cm x 10.2 cm
I'm going to start with the good news...this thing really performs. I upgraded from a Linksys AC1750 that was going on 5 or 6 years old. It had always been rock solid (not a single outage in all those years) but I had a feeling I wasn't get the speeds I should have been, boy was I correct. I recently upgraded my FIOS internet from a 100 to a 500 Gbps plan because I have two sons and both are now using tablets, etc. Plus I have a high end gaming PC and we have three TVs in the house streaming 4k, in addition to other devices. After the FIOS plan upgrade I ran a speed test from my PC and was getting about 340 gbps download and upload speeds. However, after I upgraded to this router...520 gbps download and upload! On top of that the range of the 5G network is way bigger than it was, probably triple the area. One of the other main reasons I wanted to upgrade to this router is so I have better coverage in my back yard in the summer. This thing covers my entire house and most of my yard - front and back. I am extremely happy with the performance. Now lets discuss the initial setup... First off, I got it done and it only took me a total of about 15 minutes. But there were some annoyances that I want to share with others. When you first start the setup and open the app it tells you to scan the QR code on the router. Mine didn't have any QR code on it. That was number 1. I checked the box too, no QR codes anywhere. So I had to do it manually. Not a big deal for me, however...when you select to do it manually in the app it takes you out of the app into your phone's settings to connect to the router network (NETGEAR** and the password is written on the bottom of the router). It also says that after you connect to go back into the Nighthawk app to continue setup. OK, so I connected to the router manually (which worked fine) but then wasn't able to go back into the app because the app was still directed to my phone's settings to connect to WIFI. Nothing was happening, so had to close everything and re-launch the app, which then started the process over again. Finally after 3 tries, the app recognized that I had connected to the router and continued with the setup process. Then, the router needed a firmware update. During that update I got an error message saying that it couldn't find the router, but the firmware update finished successfully anyway. Then I had to re-connect my phone to the router (again) manually to move to the final step in the setup. All in all the setup completed correctly but as you can see there were some hiccups. As stated it only took me 15 minutes or so but probably should have taken less than 5. I am being nick picky here but I remember setting up the Linksys router and it went very smoothly and quickly. Not really a big deal though and now that its done it never has to be done again. Given the performance I am getting from it, I don't really care. Hence the five star review. The only thing remaining is to find out how well this stays connected over the years. After how extremely well my Linksys performed I have very high expectations. We'll see...this review may change. ... show more

  • Really good router . Recommended with many setup option !
Size: 25.4 cm x 76.2 cm x 10.2 cm
Have had this router for awhile. Been very reliable. NETGEAR still provides firmware updates too. The web page setup interface is very deep with lots of options to fine tune its setup. I live in an area where lots of WiFi routers exist. Using WiFi sniffer on windows laptop ( I have a free app ) I’m able to find less used channels and assign the router to those . I’m using the 2.4 and 5gig bands for different settings and 2.4 gig I have 2 logins to separate out specific devices. I have a lot iOT Devices plus the computers and streamers. Everything is has a reserved IP in the LAN setup table. .It’s actually more than the NETGEAR specs it for, but not all are used at the same time so it works ok. NOTE Apple devices have a feature that will change the MAC address randomly. This will cause the router to eventually choke as it assigns new IP to the new Mac address ( dhcp is enabled in the router) . This can be seen in NETGEAR logs. the Apple device has an option to use a fixed MAC address which stops that issue. I have some background from a networking work which helped me to get the best performance in my local network. ... show more

  • Fast and secure - my internet download speeds almost doubled without any network changes
Size: 25.4 cm x 76.2 cm x 10.2 cm
This is an excellent performing wireless router with great security features like the Guest network option, which allows your guests internet access, but they can't access anything on your internal network like printers, TVs, thermostats, etc.. Installation was pretty straight-forward, but I do have years of network experience. ... show more

  • A very good router with some caveats
Size: 25.4 cm x 76.2 cm x 10.2 cm
I bought this router to replace an aging nighthawk previous model. I was drawn to it's better speeds both in terms of the internet and the intranet. Setup can be a little funky. The device comes with no instructions whatsoever. The only thing they tell you is to download the Netgear nighthawk app to your phone and to follow the instruction. This works fairly well as long as you don't make the same mistakes I made. Tip to avoid my mistake: Since I already had a nighthawk, I didn't use the power supply and internet Ethernet cable that came with it. The power supply looked identical to what I already had with the same connector. When I got the first AX5400 I could not get it to work at all. It simply would not come online. Their tech support seemed lost and recommended I ask for a replacement device, which I did. The replacement arrived a few days later and it too showed the same exact symptoms. This time I wasn't buying it, no way I got two bad ones in a row. So I tried to install again. This time all i did was disconnect the old nighthawk from the modem and I used the power supply and Ethernet cable that came with it to install it independently without disconnecting all the cables on the old one. Darn thing woke up like Rip Van Winkle. Moral of this story, do not use your old connectors. I have no clue why but they won't work. The power supply had the same values and markings and the old cable was a standard Cat6e cable. Doesn't make any sense to me. Never the less at that point everything worked great. I get some serous download speeds 3.5 times faster than my old one. My internal intranet between computers also saw a tremendous increase in speed. I didn't care for the bundled Armour security that comes with it. It is essential a bitdefender antivirus with modification to be used by the router. Darn thing blocks all kinds of websites out of the box and it is only a 30 day trial after which you need to pay for it. All my computers on my intranet are already protected by good anti-virus software so I simply turned it off. Never did care much for bundled products because at some point there is likely to be a disagreement between the bundled wares and then you are just SOL. Another issue I am having is updating the firmware. It tells me new firmware is available but it refuses to download it and install. I still don't know what that is all about. Netgear products are pretty pricey to be having these kind of quirks, and they really should include more installation details when you run into problems with the app installation like I did. Aside from those few issues which don't seem to impact performance I am pretty happen with this new router. EDIT: I should add that Netgear tech support leaves a lot to be desired. ... show more
