Stiff - Yep. Straight Whiskey could learn a thing or two from this arm, but I don't need it to move much. Silent - Yep, no exposed springs. No sound really anywhere from it. Range of motion - Up/Down is limited to move freely, but it will move. Side to Side is good. Stability - Arm seems solid. Base is attached well to the desk. The connection between the arm and base - see next: Opportunity to break - the sleeve insert in the base. The rest of the base seems pretty good. The weight from the arm/mic looks like it could snap this little plastic insert at any minute. TL;DR version: I am upgrading from a similar mic boom arm of the same size, but with the springs external and exposed. I talk with my hands, so while doing some podcasts, I kept hitting the boom arm and the springs would give that springy noise, which was really loud on the recording. I tried the Blue Compass, but ultimately sent it back after a few days. It definitely kept my Blue Yeti upright, but it never got in the position that I liked. The pictures where it's really high up? Yeah, it never really moved from there. And if I did get it to move down a bit after loosening the tension, it catapulted the mic back up into the air. On top of that, I had switched mics from the Blue Yeti to a Samson Q2U to run the XLR, so I didn't need something that could catapult a 5 pound mic. Sent that one back within a couple days. Ordered the Neewer mic boom arm, delivered this afternoon. Set it up, and yes, HUGE difference. First - No exposed springs - Check. Holds the mic in a static position - Check. Moves up and down and all the hinge things - No - BUT, I don't need it to. All I need is to move left or right to speak into it or to set aside. Cable management - Check. Yeah, it's not hidden, but it's close enough. Black cable, black boom arm, black velcro cable ties (I think I put mine inside out with the fuzzies exposed), but the XLR cable is barely noticeable, and it's never really in view of my vids anyway with my mic angle. Definitely going to keep this one around. I'll update the rating if it breaks or something, but I'm not moving the parts much, just where it connects to the desk mount. The plastic sleeve that the arm is inserted into looks a little flimsy. The major problem - the plastic sleeve insert only goes down half the length of the receiver, while most of the weight is on the bottom half of the insert. Since there is nothing inside to counter or push up against, it looks like it leans out a bit, bending the top of the plastic insert, which will eventually fail (probably sooner than later). My old base receiver fits better without a plastic sleeve, so I'll use it for backup when this base breaks. Sturdy? Yeah, the actual arm seems solid. Range of motion? 2 stars because I can go side to side with ease, but may need to eat some Wheaties for some up/down lifting. Stability? Stays put, doesn't wander around. My biggest concern is the future of this plastic sleeve in the base.

I was worried about this not staying in place because it doesn't have screws like my old mic arm, but this is actually extremely strong. You might need two arms to adjust it. I love it. It holds my Rode NT1 without breaking a sweat.

First off, if you're upgrading to this from the $15-$20 basic version, don't. The upgraded hinges are mediocre and stiff, the arms are still flimsy, the cable management is just as bad... Only improvement is the base. I worry the base is going to outlive the rest of the arm purely because I feel like I'm going to snap the arm post off when extending or retracting the arm.

If you're looking for a reliable, inexpensive, sturdy mic arm...this checks those boxes. I'd say I won't hesitate to buy another but, I'm not sure I'll ever need another.

This stand is quite beefy in terms of the actual construction, but the hinges are super stiff and barely want to move at all. The base is good enough, but it does not have enough surface area and has caused my desk to start to collapse in on itself due to the torque from the extended arm. However, the flaw that completely kills this stand is that the grip for the threaded insert is made out of quite cheap plastic, which the knurling on the insert ends up tearing into bits instead of gripping it as it is designed. This makes the mic very susceptible to leaning or rotating even when the set screw is completely tightened. I have to over torque the set screw to even have a chance of it not rotating, which still happens quite frequently.
