This unit is very heavy duty and just works. I have had the smaller ones and you have to constantly adjust them. This one never needs adjusting. Also the smaller ones would not latch a lot of times. This one latches 98% of the time. Very happy with it.

We have struggled with our gate latches for years. Depending on the humidity, our gate tends to move or swell, which usually throws the alignment off. We switched to this Adjust-O-Matic, and it has been a huge help. It is solid, well-made, and handles those seasonal shifts perfectly. Unlike our old latches, this one doesn't require us to go out and constantly adjust it to get it to close. If you have a wood gate that "moves," get this. ... show more

Heavy duty and works well but you should add washers to the mounting bolts and a thin washer to where the latch is mounted so the bolt securing it doesn't wear through.

I bought the 6 and 8 inch versions. The 6 was very flimsy so I returned it. The 8 is very heavy duty. The quality difference between the 6 inch is huge. The latch opens very smoothly. I mounted it on heavy steel gate. The previous latch broke off in the wind. This one should last a long time. I replaced the wood screws with stainless steel M6 bolts which I tapped into the steel posts. The latch is a bit longer than I needed, but better than too short. The pivoting bar is also a nice touch in case the gate starts to sag a little. The black finish is good quality and resists scratching. I've very happy with the build quality and the smooth operation. Update: It's been over a year and the latch has held up well. The black coating has worn off where the bolt contacts the receiver and in a few other friction spots. This gate tends to get slammed frequently so I am pleased by the build quality. I ordered a second latch from a vendor called Cargo.co and was disappointed that they sent me a latch that was clearly used and in poor cosmetic condition. We have a gate that we had to reverse the way it opened, and had just rigged up the old latch to slide into a hole we drilled in the post. I guess it worked fairly well in the beginning, but over time, you'd have to lift the gate up like 3in to be able to get the post into the hole. And the kids couldn't do it themselves, which was super annoying. I needed something bigger than the standard 4-5in latches in this style, and this one costs way more than I wanted to pay, but I am so happy I got it. Very quick and easy to install, even though the directions were kinda sketchy, and it's very heavy and well made. I installed it into the flattest part of a round post, and it is small enough to sit flush and snug. And even though the wood is very dry and weathered, the screws are amazingly secure. Can't speak to the durability just yet, but I can't imagine anything could degrade besides the paint coating. Which is to be expected eventually. ... show more

I received my National Hardware V23A 8" gate latch in good condition, and found it to be well made and indeed Heavy Duty. The reason for the less than great review is that there was little instruction on exactly how to install the latch. Though it appears easy enough to do without instructions, instructions would have been helpful, particularly with alignment and placing the mechanics in the correct orientation. But the unexpected item which truly does warrant a less than great review is that two of the bolts which came with the device broke during installation. I truly expected more from what appeared at first glance to be a truly "Heavy Duty" installation kit. Bear in mind that I was installing this latch to a non-wood post (no rot dense plastic equivalent). I was also installing this in 25 degree (F) conditions. So the latch mechanism seemed well designed and heavy duty, but the screw quality was not great....requiring me to look for an alternate solution since the gate latch is now missing two of the matching bolts. ... show more
