Place wider section of Barrier towards water, as the smaller section (wedge) prevents it from rolling. DO NOT want water moving in this direction causing seepage in between the Barriers. Tips & TricksDuring first activation, we recommend checking on them to make sure they are directing water as desired. Adjustments may be necessary as landscaping can alter water flow.Barriers should be stacked higher than water level for stability and to prevent them from floating away.Barriers are flexible and can be curved or wrapped.Barriers have a dual chamber, place wider edge towards water & smaller wedge away from water to prevent rolling out of position.Pre-Soaking is recommended prior to stacking or if heavy rain or water flow is expected.Staining may occur in instances where the surface is porous or unfinished cement is present. Remove from area when no longer needed.Porous surfaces like unfinished cement cause excessive seepage, since they are both trying to absorb water. Plastic barrier film in between, may help.For use in the winter/snow months, make sure they are fully activated before freezing temperatures occur to assure maximum protection when the snow is melting. We do not recommend moving them while frozen to prevent any tearing of the outer material. Also, salt on the roads should not come in contact with Quick Dams. To help, pre-activate Quick Dams with water & then wrap plastic under & over the top to prevent the salt from making contact.Do NOT use around salt water, lime or calcium. These will cause the inner absorbent to release the water & deflate the product making it useless.Flood Barriers will not fully activate unless enough water is present.Once activated by water they can be used as a barrier against other oils & chemicals.Leave in place for 3-6 months of ongoing protection. Shrinking will occur as they dry out, but they will swell again once re-exposed to water.Length of time to dry out varies on climate. Average is about 3 months as higher humidity levels tend to take longer.Once completely dry, they will feel crunchy and ready for reactivation. Smooth the contents to evenly distribute the super absorbent polymers.Direct sunlight causes the product to degrade at a rapid pace, which will result in the product feeling slimy.Do NOT cut. I bought these because my lanai floods a bit during rainy season in Florida. I have to say I am surprised by how well these work. They absorb the water and somehow it just stays inside without the surface of the things becoming wet. They expand and puff up and then just stay put blocking more water. I am leaving them in place until the end of the season and will just step over the 3 inch height after they have absorbed water. For years we have had a problem with water coming through the back door of our garage during heavy rains causing the whole floor to be flooded and damaging the items in there. We tried many different solutions that never worked. Then we heard about Quick Dam. We keep two of these barriers inside the back door of the garage at all times so we are never caught off guard if it rains. They absorb quickly and they absorb a lot of water. No more floods. And our stored items are now protected. It's a huge plus that the dams are re-usable. We liked them so much we bought another pack of them so during the rainy season we can have one set drying out and one set ready to go at the back door. absorbs well, easy to lay out. they do take a long time to dry out. but i do love the fact they are reusable. good value for the piece of mind. they are easy to maneuver for placement. i would recommend wetting them when you are stacking multiples just so they stay in place and dont blow away so u can get a good placement when lining them up ... show more

These work great for blocking water from running under an outside basement door. Had them for a couple years and used them at lease a few weeks out of every year since having them and they're still working. Even if i lay them out without soaking them and just let the rain water do its thing they still form a tight barrier. They look like great and are made of tough material, heavy and stable once fully soaked. I have 2 of the 5ft pieces and i overlap them parallel for a solid seal. Made in the USA! Ok, so I got these RIGHT before Irma. I mean, literally at the 11th hour. I actually paid extra over regular Prime shipping to have them Overnighted and for some dastardly reason whomever shipped them put signature required on the low-value package and I MISSED the delivery and was not able to pick them up at my local UPS until the next day which was super-stressful, and only possible because the storm slowed down and changed course enough that it bought me the time to still deploy them. None of this is the fault of the product itself, of course, I only mention it here in case anyone else is in a similar situation and is ordering them last minute, be careful about that signature-required pitfall for overnight shipments. *Amazon did refund the extra I paid for overnight shipping.* As for the product itself, I waver between giving it four or five stars. I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and give it 5 for now, because the minor insufficiencies I detect in the product MAY be due to my user error. It did not swell up evenly along its entire length, despite the fact that the entire length was definitely heavily rained on. I used them for my two-car garage door, my back porch, and to protect a feed room in a barn. None of these 3 locations have experienced actual water intrusion in the past, however, I have had water inch frighteningly close in past storms, and with images of Harvey fresh on my mind, I knew if we had anything even approaching half of what Harvey was, I was in for some deep trouble. Turns out, other than just the typical puddling I get in these areas, there was no real flooding threat from Irma for my area. So, although I can't boast that these Quick Dams saved my property from a great flood, I can testify that they do work because everywhere that I put them, they did stop what water there was from passing through them. I am just slightly concerned/puzzled about the parts that did not swell. Would they have swelled if the flooding had been more substantial? Or is that part of the dam defective? I don't know. I did read in a review on another one of this manufacturer's products that you should wet the dam with a hose first before use. The manufacturer includes NO instructions in the box, so I don't know if this makes a difference or not. Water is water, right? I will add the following tip that if you are expecting a flash flood, weighting down the ends of these dams with sandbags or cement blocks is a must, because they are very light, and I could see them being swept/blown away before they absorb enough water to be heavy enough to stay put. So, in that context, I would believe that wetting them down first is a good idea. But, again, I don't know about the failure of some parts of my dams to swell as I would think they should. Another insider tip, I had posted the question to the manufacturer if these dams could be cut to fit. I got the short answer "No, they can't, that will ruin them." Well, I had an extra and could afford to risk one, so I did. I of course double stitched a channel at the cut point before cutting it in half. I can confirm that cutting them in half does not ruin them and they work as normal. It is possible that the manufacturer's representative assumed that I did not have the ability to sew the ends and thought I was going to just cut one in half which I guess would allow the hydrophilic powder to leak out. Hence the apparent misinformation. I am currently using the short piece I cut under a stall door at the end of my barn aisle that frequently gets water leaking in from horses being hosed off at the washrack adjacent to it. For that alone, it works great and is a better solution to anything else I have found in 20 years of dealing with that problem. So that was my second reason to tip my review in favor of 5 stars for this product. Final point I'll make: be aware these dams aren't that high. When fully expanded it looks like they would keep no more than 2 or 3 inches of water out. As we all know, that alone can be a lifesaver. But don't count on them handling any more than that. I don't know why, but I was expecting them to be taller based on the pictures. Guess that was just my misconception. I wouldn't so much call them "flood control dams" as I would "creeping water dams". If I ever use them in a subsequent water event, I will update my review accordingly. ... show more

Purchased 02/2019 Reviewed 03/2024. This is a durability & performance review. I bought some Quick Dam products back in 2019 because I was looking for water containment products due to either heavy rain or possible burst pipes or plumbing problems. I used two of the 6ft long tubes during a heavy rain storm. I then laid the tubes out on my backyard patio in full sun afterwards when they were fully expanded & after several days they were dried out. Instead of throwing them away, I just put them in the garage on the floor out of the way. What's the saying, Out of Sight = Out of Mind? Well, they were forgotten! Enter tropical storm Hilary = Our area was to receive a tropical storm, something that has never happened during my 60+ year residency in this area. News channels were telling us to prepare & showing people filling up sand bags -- A light bulb moment went off in my head, Would those tubes still work? I had one area of my house, an enclosed patio with a sliding door that always seem to collect water during downpours because my ground (soil) is so hard where I live that it takes a while for water to be absorbed into the ground. In previous rains, I'd been ok - water would build up & then absorb into ground - but those were rains where the downpour would be on & off during the day - this projected storm would be extremely heavy rain. It was heavy, water came down in sheets non-stop for hours & hours! I had taken the tubes out of the garage & put one of the tubes in front of the slider - as you can see in the picture taken after the storm - it swelled up & still worked after 5 years -- it says on the product bag the item can be reused for months - but this sat in a garage where the temperature during the summer is over 100 degrees, and it still worked & did not completely degrade & dry out. I have recently purchased some more of these so I will be prepared again; if I had any doubts about this product working, after performing during Hilary, they are gone. ... show more

    • Great idea as a replacement for heavy sandbags

The rectangular bags contain an absorbent sub stance that turns to gel, which makes them easy to carry, stack and move around to keep water away from your home. But they contain only a small amount of the absorbent crystals. After drying out, the gel hardened and crystalized and would not absorb during the next rain. They are pricey for single use and didn't puff up like the 5ft long version because of the small amount of absorbent material inside.
