  • Keeps You Dry!!
Nothing like a week of 24/7 downpours and gale force winds to test a tent. This tent performed extremely well and would highly recommend it. Very roomy, lots of stowage pockets. The double doors and vestibules are great. The tent is a little stuffy and warm with the rainfly on the entire time, but most tents are. Some screened floor vents might have helped. ... show more

  • Durable
Have been using for years. Still sets up and works perfectly. Some of the rain proofing is flaking off- but we live in a warm, humid climate. It still keeps us dry.

  • I couldn't be happier!
Where do I start? So many other reviews have already spoken to how amazing this tent is! So I'll let you know how my first backcountry camping trip went with it. First, the hike in wasn't too long or difficult, 2.5 miles with a total elevation climb of 850 ft. Needless to say I had no problem with the weight or the room it took up in my 60L pack. First evening there it rained on us all night. I had picked what I thought was the best tent spot in the whole site. It was level, flat, smooth, almost devoid of rocks. So site prep was a snap. Tent was set up, with rain fly, in less than 10min. When I woke up the next morning, to relieve myself at 5:00am, my hand hit the bottom of the tent and I heard a splash sound and thought I felt my hand get wet. I was about to freak! NOPE! My hand was tricked by the coldness of the tent bottom. The inside of it, along with all our stuff was dry. When I got out I saw why the spot I picked was so nice..... Its where all the rain water puddles when it rains. We were sitting in a half inch deep puddle of water! The next, and last, night was beautiful. Cold but beautiful! Slept without the rain fly so that we could star gaze. Tent packed up easily and fast. And cleaned up nice a few days later at home. About myself: I'm 6'3" 190lb and my girlfriend is a bit shorter than me. We both fit very comfortably and still would have with another adult my size. Don't be food by ppl saying it's not a 3 person tent. They must be just trying to live in it or something. Because I don't know about y'all, but I only use my tent for sleeping or to escape the rain. ... show more

  • SOME ENGINEERING ISSUES
This tent is no better or worse than any other tent. However, it could be fixed. It has some engineering issues. We camped for three weeks. There were times that it was so hot in this tent, I just wanted to run out of it to get a breath of cool air. Most of the time, it was like a sauna in the tent. Even with the fly partially off, it was still hot inside with just two people. This tent is only fit for two, not three. Here is the problem. There are two doors in this tent. Each door has solid material from the bottom to half way up the door. The top part of the door is netting. As your bodies heat the tent, the body heat rises, but there is no place for the outside air to flow into the tent (except the top portion of the doors). Because the netting on the door is so high up, and close to the netting in the dome, little air exchange is taking place. No cool outside air is drawn across your bodies where you are laying down. As heat rises, there needs to be a low area of the tent where cooler outside air can come in and pass the people laying down in the tent. If MSR were to make a "double door" system.... one door that is entirely mess and the other door that they now have (and the user be able to decide which door to use given the outside temps), then you could change the flow of air as needed. Having an all mesh door, from top to bottom, allows the cooler air along the ground to be carried into the tent, across the occupants, and up to the dome of the tent as the hotter body heat rises. Right now, you have the mesh near the top of the tent, and it is doing nothing to circulate air. For this reason, I just could not give this tent a better rating, even though it does have some good qualities. It is extremely easy to set up and break down, cleans easily, and is very waterproof. The two door system is nice. I love that you can erect the fly in the rain and then put up a dry tent under it. We had some rain on our trip and this was a good feature. ... show more

  • MSR makes great tents. Very tight squeeze for 3 adults though
Very nice tent for the money. I used MSR tents both via an outfitter and traveling with friends and I knew MSR would be my next buy. They are super-quick and easy to set-up, are durable and have lots of nifty little surprise features that you find in products that are well designed. I got the 3 person Elixir to use with two people and a dog. I would not recommend it for three full sized adults. A camping buddy of mine says 25 inches in width is the minimum for a 3 person tent. This one is about 7 inches shy of that. I loaned it to three women on a Canadian wilderness paddle and they had to sleep 3 across the length of the tent and the taller of the three had to curl up to fit. We had a spare one-person tent along and the taller gal preferred that when we had the time and space to set it up. Has great vestibule space too. two doors are a must for 3 people. ... show more

  • Great buy
This tent is the real deal. Just got back from camping in awful weather and the MSR Elixir 3 stood tough. We had almost continuous rain, freezing temps at night, and we all stayed warm and dry. The setup is seriously a breeze. Very intuitive and fluid. If you watch the youtube set up video from MSR you are all ready. Just an FYI, this tent would be a VERY tight squeeze with 3 large adults. Granted I am 6'0 250, but there is no way that three adults would fit in here. You absolutely can fit three sleeping pads, but you will be flush against the others next to you. We had myself, my girlfriend and two large labs and were perfectly fine. and comfy. The rain fly is by far the best I've seen and functioned flawlessly. The vents are useful to keep condensation out. You do not receive any extra tent stakes, so be sure not to misplace them. For less than 300$ this tent is a no brainer. Ive slept in tents ranging from old school military, to top of the line expedition tents, and to be honest I liked this best. ... show more
