  • A winner!
I replaced my microbeast with the Ikon 2 and couldn't be happier. The flight characteristics were much more precise across the board. I will definitely be adding the Ikon to my other helis. Programming was pretty simple and having stability mode is certainly useful for those OH NO moments!

  • Terrible part/ destroyed my helicopter
The unit I got was junk. Not only was it missing connection wires it had some kind of electrical defect. Sometimes when you power it up and do not move the helicopter the servos would move very slow and jittery. Shut it down and restart and it works ok. Checked all the setting and they were according to the book. Sometimes it would start to cycle through different flight modes by it self without touching any of the controls. After everything seemed ok I took a chance and do a run up with no intention of even lifting off. When the motor spooled up for about 30 seconds everything was going good until the unit went crazy. Without moving the controls the helicopter went to full collective and I had no control of the unit, the servos would not respond. The only thing that worked was the throttle hold but with no controls it was pointless. Destroyed my Trex 600 that I haves cherish for many years, thanks Ikon you suck. ... show more

  • Ikon2 flybarless unit
This is my third one and all have been great! Only adjustment needed after initial programming was slight tail gain adjustment. Cyclic is always solid from the start. I have them on a Raw 420, Trex 700 and Kraken 580 nitro. Solid, locked-in feel even without self-leveling on. Great unit!

  • Great tune ability. Setup is easy. Great value
Easy to setup if you have used a flybarless gyro before required more tuning than my beastx unit, but yielded a better result. Rescue is good, though even level on ground motor off it has slight forward pitch. Wish it had an upside down rescue like other units for faster recovery at low altitudes. Beast gyro for the money no software upgrades needed. Though you loose advanced rescue. ... show more

  • Good Unit - Could Use Better Documentation
I’ve bought 2 of these, one for a Trex 450, another for a Trex 250. The 450 dropped right in, set up easily and flies really good. The 250 had a bit of a problem with tail blowouts until I found the mistake I made during setup. If something doesn’t work, you are pretty much on your own. Customer service offered some advice on the advanced settings menu, but their explanation of how that control worked contradicted the explanation given in the setup software. In the end Heli-directs advice didn’t work and was a waste of time. They should have asked for a copy of the setup file to look over the settings. The software should have included a troubleshooting guide. And online blogs don’t seem to help much. But in the end, if you figure it out, you get a FBL controller that actually works pretty good. The only thing the Ikon needs is a USB cable with the correct plug, I had one from an old Nokia phone. Competitor FBL units (like spartan or BeastX) nickel and dime you with additional modules to update firmware or program them - they get quite expensive. Once you set up your Heli, you will probably keep those settings and do the rest with your transmitter. While a Bluetooth module may initially be more convenient than constantly plugging it into you computer, once you are done, the Bluetooth module is just extra weight and space - so I’d skip that option. As for the other reviewer, we have no idea what they did, or didn’t, do before destroying their helicopter. With any FBL unit it takes a lot of testing to make sure the Heli is flightworthy long before reconnecting the motor lead. You have to make sure the Swash responds correctly to both transmitter inputs AND tilting of Heli itself. The tail also needs similar testing, which can get confusing when rotating the Heli around. You simply cannot plug it together, run through the setup wizard, and go fly - that is how you destroy a helicopter. Update - the trex 250 flew 4 times with a slight tail wag in forward flight. When I returned from the field, I lowered the tail gain by 5 points to tune it better and raised the head speed (to reduce torque) and that’s where it fell apart. The tail started to blow out in hover, without any collective inputs beyond what was needed to hover. First, I restored the head speed to the slower rate - no difference. Then I incrementally raised the tail gain towards the original setting with no difference. One time it didn’t save the change I made. I ended up everything back to the original setting where it would at least hover without wagging. On that hover flight it blew out 180 deg again, 10 sec later it lost all tail hold and the Heli started spinning. I tested the servo extensively later on, and found nothing wrong. I went back to the Ikon setup software to verify servo settings and couldn’t get in - Ikon is bricked. This one is a POS! I reduced rating from 4 star to 2. My other Ikon unit continues to work well in my trex 450, but I don’t dare connect it to my computer. ... show more

  • Put my flawless goblin 420C into the ground…
The media could not be loaded. This Ikon2 was perfect for about 50 flights. No issues what so ever then mid flight my tail started to flutter uncontrollably. I was able to get it lower and minimize damage but it got banged up. At this time I figured I lost a tail servo (high end brushless servo). But after carful diagnostics using known good parts I found that when anything is plugged into the Ikon2 tail servo port after being on for a minute or so all the servos flutter but the tail is most obvious. I crash from time to time and I’m good with mistakes and repairs doing this hobby but when a 30 day old “high quality” FBL fails causing damage to a $1400 aircraft it’s very frustrating. ... show more

  • I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
This fbl controller is a joke!!.its advertised as "simple and easy" to setup...THATS A LIE!.you cant do diddley with it unless you hook it up to a p.c.... but first you have to go through the headache of downloading and installing software.. you computer wants to install drivers in order to do that.. the directions are vague and do not elaborate well..youll end up spending hours goin through forums and researching yo figure out why your having one of the 2 dozen issues your having..and you can forget customer support!..ive tried calling helidirect for 3 weeks ..and no matter when you call..youll get the same message saying. " Were sorry..you have reached us outside of our normal business hours..leave a message"... 3 weeks since i bought this pc of junk...and still havent got my bird in the air!! JUNK JUNK JUNK!! • Terrible instructions. Zero customer service.
Instructions are absolutely terrible. I have 3 of this units and every time you need to change something, you would spend hundreds of hours reading YouTube comments, because there are no official manual. Version 2 finally got bailout somewhat working. Version 1 bail out would flat out chop your head off. If it would be up to me, I would make them recall version 1 and refund customers all the money. ... show more
