  • This tent literally saved my life.
Color: Gray/Red Size: 1 Person
I don't write many product reviews. I'm just too busy doing other things. But in this case, I'm going to take the time to review this tent that has literally saved my life on a few occasions. For background, I work as a backpacking guide for an educational organization in Montana. I'm often out for 3-12 weeks at a time in the summer and fall. The courses I teach take students out into a variety of rough landscapes - the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Glacier NP, the Great Burn WSA, Upper Missouri Breaks, and the GYE. I need a solo tent that can handle extreme temperatures during both seasons, is supremely waterproof, that's fairly lightweight and easy to set up. The Elixir 1 has ticked every single box. Pros: - the quality of the materials are the biggest pros for me. Everything feels extremely durable. The fly and floor of this tent are twice as thick as many other one-person ultralight tents, which of course means the tent as a whole is heavier but supremely waterproof. This saved me more than once when we were caught in extended periods of hard rain. On one occasion, we were caught in so much rain that the cirque started to slide. Several tents were pushed down slopes by mud and every single tent flooded...except mine. I was bordering on hypothermic having spent 3 hours counting between thunder and lightening strikes to determine whether or not to keep students in or out of tents. If my tent had flooded and my sleeping bag had been soaked through, I'm really not sure I could have re-warmed myself. - The pole system is elegant and very rigid. I spent several nights in winds exceeding 40mph and the tent barely shook. Especially when guyed out, this tent is rock solid. - The weight and packability are fairly good and more than worth it for the superior materials - This thing is roomy for a one-person. I'm over 6' and can stretch out completely without touching the tent walls. I can also sit up inside and change clothes/read without my head being cramped. It's also wide enough to where I was able to store most of my gear and clothing in the tent next to me, which was an advantage during those heavy rains and muddy camps - That being said, the vestibule is very roomy - plenty of space for my pack and extra gear - The gear loft pockets are very convenient for small items - The general aesthetics of the tent are excellent - classic MSR colors Cons: - I used the footprint on every occasion for extra protection. I do wish the footprint's rivets were designed to where the tent could be moved with the footprint attached (otherwise, when you pick up the tent to move it, the footprint just falls off and it's a pain to reattach) - The default stakes should be replaced with MSR Groundhogs. I do this with every tent. If I was MSR, I just wouldn't bother manufacturing any other stakes. The Groundhogs will save you some weight, they don't bend, and they're way stronger than the hook design. - While the colors look sharp, the white tent fabric does show every spec of dirt and mud. Some backpackers take pride in their gear looking filthy. I do not. They could replace the white with a grey that would hide more dirt. - Ventilation is fairly good, but it could be better with an additional fly vent or two. All things considered, this little tent is just perfect for the price. Serious kudos to MSR for designing a bombproof tent for all conditions. ... show more

  • Great tent for weight!
Color: Gray/Red Size: 2 Person
I've owned other tents before. For it's weight and size it's very nicely made. Only thing I've found so far bad is the weight of the flooring. Not so sure on it's durability at this point. Instead of the provided ground cover, I'm using an 6 x 8 foot 10mm thick tarp for a ground cloth. I'm in the middle of a bicycle tour using it when necessary. The provided tent stakes work well and take a pretty good beating as I had to use a rock in order to drive the stakes into some rather hard ground. I haven't used the stakes for tying down the rain fly at this point but when I looked, I was missing one stake from the content. I'll call MSR support if I need to get the missing stake. Their support is great as I've had to call them for filters for an MSR stove I have before. ... show more

  • Survived a Major Wind Storm
Color: Red Size: 3 Person
At first, like others, I didn’t like the setup of this tent. However, this was because I set it up the first time in the living room for practice. In the field, it’s very easy. Stake the footprint, stake the tent, put two poles in one side, and go grab the two poles on the other side and push up. Then, it’s as simple as clipping and setting up the easy rainfly. Anyone struggling with this must be inside their homes. Performance: It didn’t leak for rain. It handled a snow squall. Above all else, it didn’t budge in an epic night terror storm with 80-90 mph winds (speed confirmed the next morning at the ranger station). To be clear, it was fully staked and taught-lined that night. Plenty of room for two. Double vestibules for gear (although it doesn’t come with enough stakes for vestibules, but those are easy enough to carve up quick in the field). Pockets to hold stuff and many loops to hang stuff. Glowing zippers are great. For backpacking it’s light enough if one totes tent and one totes food. For car camping it is good too. Wonderful product! ... show more

  • Expecting good results
Color: Gray/Red Size: 1 Person
I’ve owned a 2 person MSR tent for many years and found it durable with easy set up. Decided to buy this one person tent for a long backpack trip I’m planning for this summer. Quality of materials seems good. Comes with a footprint which is a plus. The tent poles took some getting used to but, after 2 set up attempts, I think I got it. Nice rain fly that leaves room to shelter shoes or possibly the backpack. I’m expecting good results, but if I’m wrong, I’ll re- review. ... show more
