    • GREAT laptop (i5-8250U, UMA version) for general purpose use and then some...
I bought this for my mother who will really only use this laptop (i5-8250U, UMA version) for general purposes , meaning doing finances, surfing the web, looking at pictures, Word and a few other programs, playing solitaire real basic stuff like that. In setting everything up for her I have noticed that the i5-8250U is a pretty awesome processor for it's class. Before purchasing I did some research and comparing the i5-8250U processor vs the other i7-8550U processor the i7 they are also selling with a graphics card that's a bit more expensive. Through researching the i5-8250U is just about as fast, the difference is negligible in my opinion, so I bought the cheapest version here which was the i5-8250U, UMA. Totally worth it! Now add the 256GB SSD and this little laptop hums, it's super fast. Some people may say that just the 256GB SSD is too small but in this case it's perfect because I have a network drive setup to store our files, this way the 256GB is strictly for programs and whatnot. This thing will last my mother for a few years (at least 5). Oh, it also has a back lit keyboard (that's a plus), I think it's always on and the color is white, it's a nice tough. I have the laptop set to sleep when the lid is closed, when you open the lid back up the laptop is virtually instantaneously on right where you left off. In terms of battery life, I have not used it much other than setup which took a few hours (4 hours roughly, I uninstall useless software, not to much installed on this laptop which is good and disable tons of stuff in windows 10, then install better software and security). The battery held up nicely through several restarts and a few install/uninstalls (pretty taxing stuff for not being plugged in), it went from 100% to 38% in roughly 4 hours of constant work, also I have had it sleeping for two days now and the battery went from 100% to 71%, not bad at all. I definitely like this computer. This would also be a great PLEX server (PLEX is a media organizer/player and much more, look it up its great). I have a feeling this laptop will suit my mother's needs and then some, I would absolutely recommend this laptop. MSI is a great brand for a computer. ... show more

    • Not a bad portable device.
If you liked how computers looked circa 2005, then this will work for you. Rather flashy silver with lots of blinking lights. Not my cup of tea, but the user I purchased for doesn't mind. The unit is very lightweight, but to get there it needed to be made of plastic. It feels flimsy with lots of flex. The keyboard is alright but not something I would enjoy to use very long. The person using this just wanted something more portable. If that is what you want then go for it. The nvme drive died within a month. I was able to RMA it to MSI and they replaced without a fuss. It was done in a week which was much faster than they originally quoted. When you receive it they partitioned the disk into separate OS and data partitions. Windows 10 would NOT let me delete the data partition so It remains separate (I have too many other things to do than fight Windows). The problem is that Windows 10 Pro will not let you encrypt the data partition along with the OS drive. You have to use a separate passphrase which is a real pain. Instead I encrypted the OS drive using secure boot and left the data drive un-encrypted. My user doesn't know how to use the data drive any way. ... show more

This laptop looks nice and clean but I have 2 major dislikes. The design is NOT as advertised. There are supposed to be 2 vents and 2 fans in the back. And 2 intake vents on the bottom. There is only 1 of each. The fans also make a super high pitched whining sound after they reach a certain speed. Very hurtful to my ears and indiscreet. ... show more
