  • Expensive but saves time and makes work easier.
Style: 15.6"|RTX 2070|4K|i9-9880H|32GB|1TB
I have much to say about this computer. I haven't owned it for very long so I'll be updating my review constantly. But for now I can only say it is a very good laptop. The Good: This thing has POWER. I used to own a Surface Book 2 (i5 with crappy graphics) and I hated it for not even being able to play Rainbow Siege Six at more than 30 fps that was if it even loaded the game. But this machine does it easy with low settings and in whisper mode (lowers performance but keeps it from heating up) it gets me up to 230 fps sometimes. I do however think I modified some things otherwise it only got me 35 fps. I also use handbrake to turn movies from mkv to mp4 and I love how fast it is now. With my Surface Book 2 an episode that would take 13 hours to change now only takes 2 hours or a little less. The keyboard is nice and firm, you can adjust the keyboard lighting easily and even turn off. Has plenty of ports for me. Good image quality, but nothing really spectacular. Can't really tell the difference between 4k and 1080 resolution. The screen henge is great. If I place it in one spot the screen will stay and not move. Touch pad is good. Has a nice and convenient thing at the top of the screen that makes it easier to open laptop. Very useful and is not to big. Starts up quick. About 7 seconds or less. It's light for the monster it is. The Bad: The fans are LOUD when it being pushed to its max. And it heats up. The left and particularly the right side of where the speakers are gets super hot. Now I'm not a laptop expert so I don't know if that's supposed to happen or if it is a design issue. Hopefully it can take it for a few years (5 at very least) before it stops working on me. The finger print scanner is a waste of space. It's just there to say, "I come included with the laptop" but it doesn't work. I think it worked 2 times the first time and now it doesn't work. Battery life is bad. Which is no surprise really. I did lower it from 4k to 1080 so that helped a little with the battery and performance issues. So just make sure you take your charger with you wherever you go. Speaking of, it's the size of a brick...almost. The light on the screen kept going to maximum whenever I'd open a program. Which was driving me crazy. I think I found the issue though, it a msi program that opens automatically which is used to adjust the screen levels. I just closed it and it seems to have solved that issue. The Ugly: The charger is a plug in. My old laptops all where magnetic based chargers. Which is definitely the way laptops should go. The charger port is located on the right hand side. Which is annoying, as I am right hand sided just like 90% of the human race. The issue here is that if you use a mouse and game you're likely to be bumping into it if you have a limited space. Also if you place the wire behind the screen there is an obvious problem. The round fat part of the charger cable is directly in the way of the main right side fan. So it doesn't allow the hot air to flow out effectively, which is terrible since that side is the one that heats up the most. So now I have to place the charger wire running through my lap. Which is very annoying since it is in my way now. The keys on the keyboard lack guides. Sure it has some but it can use more. Like what can I click on to switch songs or pause a video or song? My old smaller keyboard had these so I don't see why this one lacks them. Lacks protective armer. If they sold that along with a screen protector that would be great. It has no camera at the backside of the screen which I don't mind, just letting future buyers know. So that's all for now. The computer is very expensive but it does cut work by A LOT. So in the long run it is worth it. Hopefully it does last me at very least 5-10 years. One of the reasons I got a laptop with high specs was to future-proof, so it better not die on me. 2024: Well it lasted me 4 years, while it still works it's not the same as when it was new. It heats up and the fans start blasting just by using Microsoft Word. I'm suspecting the fans have dust but considering the specs on this laptop are outdated now I'm just going to buy a new laptop instead of fixing this one up. When I first got it, it was amazing how much faster it was compared to my older laptop. It was a decent laptop but considering how fast technology gets updated it's not worth the $2,800 I paid for it. ... show more

  • Almost perfect, some issues
Style: 15.6"|RTX 2070|4K|i9-9880H|32GB|1TB
Let's get some mundane details out of the way first: Build quality is great, screen is very nice, touchpad is great, keyboard is decent (more details below), Thunderbolt 3 support is meh, cooling is meh, noise is meh, ethernet port is... odd. Before I jump into the nitty gritty, I will say this. The last laptop I purchased was in 2011, was also an MSI, and some of my expectations may be... off. - Build quality 9/10: Very good compared to cheaper plastic laptops. If you ever ask the Mac folks about why they waste so much $$$, one of their responses will be about the build quality of Macs. I don't blame 'em considering Macs do have superior build quality compared to their PC counterparts. Does that justify the cost? Hell no, but it is unfortunately true. A lot of PC laptops out there have cheap, chintzy plastic clamshells that feel cheap, flex, etc. Not this laptop though. While there are some plastic components, most of this laptop is aluminum and is pretty solid. A comparable Mac Book pro with the same specs is $1100 more than this, not that I would ever give Apple any $$$. Screw that! - Screen 7/10: Okay, I wanted the 4k, because 1080p is not enough screen real-estate, but I would have MUCH preferred a 1440p display. This introduces the problems with scaling in Windows. 1080p is not enough, but also 4k is too much. Why on Earth do laptop manufacturers not use 1440p in their displays?! They are exceptionally rare, and it blows my mind. It's just wasted pixels on a 15" screen. I don't get it, personally. I did mention Windows 10 scaling, and if you plan on running with multiple displays, you'll be messing with window scaling more than you want to, just a warning. As far as color reproduction, it's just as good as my desktop counterparts, also being calibrated IPS displays. - Touchpad: It's the best damn touchpad I've ever used, hands-down. I'm usually in front of a full keyboard/mouse setup, but when I have to use the touchpad, it's the least annoying I've ever used. It's nice and smooth, no rough spots, and gestures work out of the gate. - Keyboard: It's a nice keyboard. My only gripe is why the hell MSI thought it was a good idea to have two backslash keys, what?! I would have much preferred the R. Alt key be next to the space bar, with the next key being the context key, you know, like a standard keyboard? Other than that, the keys feel nice, and there's a satisfying tactical feedback on depress, not mushy at all. I would have also preferred at least some basic lighting besides white keys. Not asking for full RGB here, just a simple solid color other than white would've been nice. - Thunderbolt 3 support: I say meh due to two inconveniences. First, being not being able to charge the laptop with the Thunderbolt port. This is a fail, and now instead of just carrying just the laptop to and from work, also carrying the charger. For the record, I knew this going in, but it's still unfortunate and a warning. In addition to this and one i didn't know about is that you CANNOT drive more than one display with a thunderbolt dock. I found this out through the dock manufacturer, and also confirmed through MSI support to make sure there wasn't something wrong on my end. At home I just use the DisplayPort connector to drive my monitor, but at the office, have 2 displays. In addition to the dock, I also have to plug in the charger and a monitor cable. It's unfortunate and one of the reasons I took off star. - Cooling: Damn this was disappointing (there is a workaround). I know these high end laptops run hot, but DAMN. Running the Heaven benchmark kept the CPU between 85-95C even spiking to 100C in some cases. I decided to use throttlestop to lower CPU voltage and boost frequency a bit. This helped immensely. With Offset voltage to -85, highest boost to 4.1GHz, and EPP @ 64, temps are acceptable, rarely ever going over 85 under load, and 40-45 idle. - Noise; The fans can get noisy under load, but I suppose that's a given :) As an aside, but my CPU fan has a tendency to make a clicking noise when going from low to high speed. - Ethernet Port: I wasn't expecting this. After plugging in ethernet, I had a hell of a time getting the damn cable out. I thought it was a fluke at first, but the second and third time pretty much tells me something is wrong with the port. There might be some leftover burrs n the chassis from assembly. I literally had to use needlenose pliers to wriggle the cable out of the port. This happened with every cable I tried, so now I have just a dedicated cable for this with the clip broken off to make it easier to get out. Other notes: - Windows scaling can be a crap-shoot when dealing with multiple monitors. Apps that don't support scaling properly will look super tiny out of the box. These can be fixed on a per app basis though. - This thing is very light compared to other laptops I've dealt with, it's quite impressive how much power is crammed into this ting. - The webcam is garbage, disappointing. I have video meetings almost daily and this thing doesn't hold a candle to my Logitech C920 from 2012 LOL. - For some reason, the fan is always at high speed at the login screen, even after letting it sit there for a while. - The fingerprint reader works 90% of the time, but when it does, it's super fast. - If this thing is going to be in the same room as you sleep, keep an eye on your task manager to make sure nothing is set to run and wake the computer up when you're likely sleeping. When this thing wakes up, it will unleash the cooling kraken and not stop unless you login, or the computer goes back to sleep. Pretty much all of the tasks I found were set to re-run every hour indefintely, so I changed them to run once daily. Mostly 3rd party apps like Chrome and whatnot doing their auto-updates. - MSI Creator Center doesn't scale properly. I will look HUGE on a monitor with 100% scaling, same goes for Corsair iCUE. Bottom line. this is perfect for my use case, and perhaps a bit overkill. Even though I'm not gaming on this laptop, the beefy GPU does aid in some of my workflows. I am a web developer, so I am using a lot of different applications that also happen to be big memory hogs, so the 32GB comes in handy, as does the assistance from the GPU. In addition to the impressive specs, I also wanted something that didn't make me look weird to clients. Despite the aforementioned shortcomings, I am really happy with this purchase, and hope MSI takes some notes for future iterations. ... show more

  • Excellent performer, slick design
Style: 17.3"|RTX 2070|HDR|i9-9880H|32GB|1TB
You know what you buy with this unit. Uncompromised performance, to of the line CPU and GPU. This unit will play any game you throw at it without breaking a sweat. Plug it into a secondary monitor to truly make it works, and still it performs like a champ. Fans at high rpm are of course audible but not very heavy. The fingerprint reader is a nice touch to unlock the laptop. Screen is well calibrated, as I used it primarily for designing work and video editing. SSD is a samsung OEM which performs very good, there are 2 other m.2 slots for additional space. The unit is not bulky nor heavy, and seems pretty sturdy. Very pleased with purchase. ... show more

  • Great Laptop, Runs Hot.
Style: 17.3"|RTX 2070|HDR|i9-9880H|32GB|1TB
Experienced some throttling out of the box, but some minor undervolting seems to have alleviated those issues. I swapped out, and added two additional SSDs (for a total of three). It was much easier than on my old GS63. If you need to access the RAM, or want to re-paste the CPU, you'll be looking at having to remove the motherboard. It's definitely a pricey laptop, and not what I'd consider a value pick. But, if you want something big, light and powerful, there's a premium attached to that. All-in-all, I'm very happy with my purchase. ... show more

The product was faulty; the screen kept flickering. It’s quite disappointing to buy such an expensive product and still have basic issues with it. I had to return it within a week.
