  • Do not buy this for 3rd Generation Nests
The only reason I rated it at 2 stars vs 1 is the fact that I got it over night and the replacement process was pretty simple. I'm pretty sure that is more Amazon than the company. Having said that I ordered the replacement battery on Monday and it isnt supposed to be here till Friday. I purchased this battery for a 3rd generation Nest thermostat. The thermostat display would blink red and said it needed charging. I Googled it and there were instructions for charging via USB cable. The site also said this would only be good for a couple days before the battery would stop working altogether. This ended up holding true as mine got to the point after 3 days where it wouldnt work after charging. It would blink green, but after placing it back on the base it would not work, give me a restarting indication then blink red. The first couple days it would charge and then at least cool my house down before it would need charging again. Every time I would charge it, it would work for less and less time. Until as stated by the third day it didn't work at all. 1. Customers arent supposed to change the battery per Google. 2. We did anyways, and the process is no where near as easy as their video shows. That one must have been previously torn apart or something because getting the screws out of the faceplate took me utilizing the small screwdriver provided with the kit and placing it into one of my screwdrivers with a socket in the end of it to hold the provider screwdriver. This was the only way to get enough torque to get the screws out. There is no way I could have gotten them out any other way. All of my bits were too big. The screwdriver is one sized like those that are used for a pair of glasses, very small. 3. After all of that work installing the battery and putting it all back together the battery would not take a charge. I charged it with the USB cable for 2 hours then on the base for an hour. It blinked red the whole time. I put the original battery in, and it was at least able to charge with the USB cable as it did before. Bottom line, the Nests manufacturer warranty if you install the nest yourself is 2 years. If you have a certified Nest installer do it I believe it is 3 years. I called Google and unfortunately 1. My manufacturer warranty had expired 4 months earlier. :/ 2. Even though I was wanting to just buy a display only from Google they do not provide that option. 3. So, I had to go buy a new Nest at Best Buy for $250 plus tax and warranty = $320. Why Best Buy? Their warranty was $32 and it is a no questions asked 4 year replacement warranty. Whereas, Lowes longest warranty was 2 years and cost $49. I will say that even though I was on the phone with the Google representative for almost 1.5 hours it was a pleasant experience. I was honest with them about trying to change the battery. I figured they cant help me fix the problem if they dont know what has been done. They appreciated my candor and he did everything in his power to get me a new display. Unfortunately the fact I was out of warranty prevented it from happening. ... show more

  • Not an Exact Replacement for the Nest Thermostat 3rd Gen Battery
My two year old Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen lost power completely recently. After I took it off the base and recharged it via its USB port, it was able to work a few hours, but then it started displaying "Start Delayed" message. It goes on a few minutes, the AC would go off and the Delay message will come on again. When this continues, eventually the battery will lose all its stored energy. This I believe is caused by the Nest battery not having enough capacity left. In my installation, where there is no Common Wire, the battery charges when the AC is in the off state. Every time the AC is turned on, the Nest is powered only by the battery. On hot days, the duty cycle of the AC is high, and each time it maybe on a long time. This is when battery stored energy is essential. I bought this replacement battery hoping to resolve my problem. Alas, it did not help. Take a look at the photo I have. The original battery is rated at 2.1 Wh and this battery is rated at 1.41 Wh. This is almost 1/3 less capacity than the original. I have a 3-wire (R-G-Y) thermostat cable now. There is no extra wire to bring the Common wire from the furnace to the thermostat. I plan bite the bullet and rerun a 5-wire (R-G-Y-B-W) cable to bring the Common wire to the thermostat. That's the only sure way to solve the problem. ... show more

  • Works with Nest gen 3 but difficult installation.
This appears to be doing the job on a nest gen 3. Make sure you charge the battery manually before reinstall on base. 4 stars instead of 5 because there was no color key for which way the wire plugs into the connector. Had to watch and stop YouTube video for color key. Once you know which way to plug it in it is very difficult to get the connectors to insert correctly. Must use flat mini screwdriver to help guide connector. It’s way harder than it shows on the video. Update: bought this in June, it’s September now and it won’t hold a charge. Worked great for 3 months. Company sent replacement battery promptly with no issues. Looking on the net, Nest 3 batteries die after 13 months, one month out of warranty, if no common wire because the battery runs the unit when A/C is on. We have the hottest summer in history this year and the battery dies. Will run a common wire or outboard transformer. Called Nest and they were no help. ... show more

  • Worked great in Nest Gen3
Have a pair of 5 year old (hard to believe it's been that long!) Nest Gen3s, and one of them began randomly disconnecting from WiFi. Figured it was worth seeing if a battery replacement was even possible.... and here we are! Ordered this battery up and it arrived in short order. Overall replacement was relatively easy (check YouTube for several how-to videos) and within 20 minutes or so, the Nest was re-assembled and plugged into USB for about an hour of charging prior to reattaching to the base. After the hour, I re-attached the Nest to the base and have had zero issues since. Will be buying another one just to keep on hand when my second one decides to give out! ... show more

  • Did not work in a 2nd generation Nest thermostat
I installed this battery in my 2nd generation Nest thermostat and it didn't work. I reinstalled the old/original battery and the thermostat worked. I reinstalled this battery and no luck. I must have wasted two hours on this and I have no idea how many times I took the thermostat apart. I may buy an Ecobee if the Nest low battery issues keep coming and going because this battery was not a solution. ... show more

  • Not a good replacement battery. Half the capacity of the original.
I was disappointed to find that this battery that is advertised as a replacement for the original internal battery in the generation 2 NEST thermostat is not a suitable replacement. The capacity of this battery is FAR LESS than half of the original. If it works at all its operational life will be short. The seller does not provide this specification in the listing. This information needs to be disclosed. It is intellectually dishonest at best to advertise this as a replacement. The original battery in the 2nd generation NEST thermostat is ratedd for 2.1 watt-hours. This replacement battery is only rated at 1.41 watt hours. BUYER BEWARE. ... show more
