  • Easy to set up. Reliable.
Xfinity (Comcast) sent me a message saying my old modem was too old to receive the higher speed signal that my plan demands. So I needed to upgrade and choose this Motorola MG8702 because I wanted to buy something instead of renting to save money in the long run. It pays for itself in about 1.5 years or so. Installation was easy and so was setting up this device. Really easy actually. And I didn't need to call Comcast and sit on hold forever. After you plug it in and connect with an Ethernet cable, I was able to use the free Xfinity app to register my device with Comcast - just follow the steps and it only took a few minutes. Once Xfinity acknowledged my new device, it automatically registered this unit to my account and started to get the faster speed almost immediately. Then, in combination with the free Motosync app, I was able to adjust the settings of the modem with ease. You can also tap into these settings if hardwired to a PC but having the option to use the app from anywhere is very convenient and easy. I was able to rename and assign the username and password of my old unit to this new one using the app so I didn't need to re-sync all my connected devices which was very time saving. If you buy this device, go ahead and install this Motosync app to your phone now as you wait for it to arrive to save time later. You will need it. Also, between the Xfinity app and this Motosync app, the unit was smart enough to automatically install the latest firmware. Granted, my unit did get hung up once while installing the new firmware but everything went through after one restart. Other than this tiny hiccup, I have no complaints. Been using this for a couple months now and has been reliable. Have not needed to restart it since. This model also has a USB port which is mainly used for diagnostics but it can also be used to charge a USB powered device in a pinch; this is a nice, simple extra. I guess my only complain is a very minor one - the 4 Ethernet ports on the back are aligned in a 2x2 square configuration. I would have preferred a 4-in-a-row vertical stack as I think accessing the ports are little easier that way but this is very minor and doesn't really make a difference. Recommended. ... show more

  • Works with Optimum cable, good speeds, app is not so useful
I'm on Optimum cable in NJ. Bought this to replace my aging Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 modem/router. This new unit is DOCSIS 3.1, which is .1 better right? Fairly straightforward install, but I spent 25 minutes on the phone with Optimum for them to activate since it's not one of their Arris units. That's not Motorola's fault. I use 3 of the 4 ethernet ports on back. All good. Wireless is strong and was easy to get our laptops, phones, etc hooked up to. Using online speedtest and the slow speedtest on the app, it looks like I'm getting between 215mbps - 229mbps download and 36mbps upload. I'm happy with that. The motosync app is just okay. It's slow. I can get into configs easier from using my browser to the admin backpage. ... show more

  • Stops working after a few months
At first I was pretty pleased with this combo modem/router. My network is somewhat complicated having approximately 30 reserved addresses for DHCP and wifi. After getting the device online thru COX, I went thru the painful task of configuring the router side to match my old network. Everything was great until I decided to get a BACKUP of configuration. Wow, It took me a while to realize, YOU CAN'T BACKUP YOUR CONFIG SETTINGS. That was a big letdown. So I made snapshots of each config page that I made changes to and saved the document in my computer documentation folder. Things went great for a few months and then one day one of my devices couldn't connect to the internet. Tracking the problem down, I discovered, the router was no longer passing DNS addresses. I spent a few hours tracking this down and ended up resetting the device to factory defaults and hand entering all of my custom setting back into the device. Could have made it much easier if the software had a backup and restore config feature. I can't believe it doesn't support this simple function. Anyway, the device worked for another month or so then the same darn thing happened again. It would no longer pass DNS addresses properly. Another factory reset, another period of time where it worked and another failure. This time, even after a factory reset, it won't pass DNS. Its become a paper weight and its only 7 months old. What a piece of junk and Motorola support is worthless. I've hard coded DNS addresses in each of my individual devices in order to get them back on the internet. I'm going back to separate modem and router setup. This thing was a $250 disaster. I might try using it in Bridge mode but then again, it might be more of a hassle than it's worth. Anyone else having DNS issues with this thing? ... show more
