Easy to use and dependable

There are a lot of mixed reviews out there, but I thought this camera and monitor screen meet my needs. Super easy to set up, just plug it in to the power outlet and wait a sec for handheld monitor to find the camera. I used the monitor in hand while I found the perfect camera position for keeping an eye on baby. I have a 2 story home with a finished basement and was looking for a way to keep an eye on baby sleeping upstairs while I'm down on main floor in the kitchen or down the basement watching a movie. I have no problem with connection of the handheld monitor to the camera throughout my home. The monitor has an antenna that folds up from the back, I find that I need that up to get rid of interference or backfeed noise. The camera microphone is sensative enough for you to hear the baby breathing on the monitor and sometimes sounds from other rooms get picked up and echoed through. At night, I turn the volume off because it is hard to sleep listening to all the baby noises. The camera has night vision so you can see the baby just fine, but know that by definition - night vision is black and white. The only way you'd get color picture at night is if you shined a light on your baby. The monitor has a limited battery, which i usually just leave plugged in or know I've only got a few hours unplugged. All and all, I think this is a great set for single camera use, it has the option to expand to multiple cameras but the monitor only lets you see one camera at a time. Have to click into the menu to choose the camera you want to see so if you were watching two kids you'd have switch back and forth. ... show more

Poor in so many ways

Update: below is a review I wrote for the MPB33, Motorola contacted me and allowed me to return the 33, and replaced it with the 36S. I like the 36S, the pan & zoom control from the parent unit is nice, and there are no issues with hissing or hiccuping. The cons now: the battery dies pretty quickly. I leave the charging cord at my nightstand and the parent unit is plugged in all night long. I take it off the plug in the AM and it operates for about an hour off the plug. It loses at least 1, if not 2 bars of power in just an hour. When my daughter goes to bed at night and the unit is off the charger for a few hours, like right now, I am down to 1 bar. Why? I click on the image every so often, but I don't leave it on for more than a few seconds. Why does it have to turn on when you plug the parent unit into the charging cord? Kudos for Motorola for reaching out to me to replace my defective unit, but I am still convinced that companies that make baby equipment don't test their products on people with babies! It's 2016 and humans have landed a rocket on a comet, why are we still stuck with baby monitors that hiss, hiccup, and are all-around aggravating? Pros: The camera can be adjusted (by hand) up & down and side to side to achieve the right view is great. The image quality is very nice, especially in daylight, it's quite beautiful. That's about it! I like the zoom in function of the camera, too, but the baby's face has to be in juuuust the right spot in the crib, or else you get a close-up of a zipper or onesie logo. Cons: You have to either press the on button several times or hold it for 5-10 seconds to turn on, and that's when the buzzing and beeping starts. The buzz is constant, the beeping goes away once the screen is turned off. These sounds do not decrease in volume even if you turn the volume of the unit down. In fact, it often times will jump to a louder beep and buzz, then fall back down to the normal level. Once you get past the beeping and buzzing there is the matter of the screen being on and off. You don't have to have the image of the baby on the monitor screen all of the time, and you'll save battery power, of course, by leaving the screen dark except to check in on the sleeping kiddo. When you do want to check in, however, an annoying red image appears across the screen, to tell you that the image will continue for 5 minutes. This warning disappears eventually, but I don't want it there in the first place! I am just peeking in, and don't need a giant warning about the time. I don't want the talk function, it's scares the kid, in my opinion, and I have accidentally pressed the button once or twice, which could seriously disturb my sleeping bambina. I also don't see a need for a music function. Every other baby product makes music, I swear I've seen a wipe dispenser that played a tune!?!?! Really, does the manufacturer need to waste the space, and increase the cost of the unit, by including the music? Seems totally unnecessary, but I don't think you can buy a monitor without it. Maybe I'm the one Mom who feels this way... All in all the monitor does its job, but it is clumsy at best. If you normally sleep with a sound machine then pack away the canned rainforest and enjoy the white noise of this Motorola! ... show more

Amazing-worth every penny!

My friend recommended this video monitor and I was a bit reluctant to spend this much on one, but I am so glad I did! I just had my first child less than two weeks ago and was feeling a bit overwhelmed. I felt like I couldn't leave her in a different room because I feared something bad would happen to her. The quality of both the audio and video on this thing are AMAZING! Now she sleeps in a bassinet in our bedroom, and I can mount the camera to the bassinet and can get such a great closeup I can literally SEE her chest moving up and down, and of course can hear any disturbances. It really offers me peace of mind since I am a full-time student and have lots of things to get done around the house on a daily basis. I also love the fact that there are pre-programmed lullabies you can play as well as the option to speak to her through the monitor if I am out of the room. Great product! Totally worth every penny :) ***UPDATE*** While the quality of the audio and video are still just as good as the day I purchased this, I am finding the port for the charger cable for the monitor portion no longer holds the cable in the way it should. I am always very careful with this device and it hasn't been knocked over or dropped. Unfortunately it is difficult to get a decent, full charge with this issue and in the middle of the night it beeps at me telling me it is almost dead even though it is plugged in. :( Very disappointed as I am so careful with my electronics but it is past the return window now. ... show more

Highly Recommend

Bought this to use when my baby grandson came to stay over. Package arrived before the due date and was packaged extremely well (I guess being electronic equipment you don't want it to get wrecked in transit). Set it up in the guest bedroom where his crib is. Put the camera on a bookshelf aimed at the crib. Held the video monitor in my hand and manipulated the camera until I could see the crib perfectly. Went down the hall and into my kitchen and I could see the crib perfectly. Tested it with my daughter and the sound worked perfectly. The video picture does go black & white if there is any light in the room but that's not a problem. We tried it also on our back patio and the picture and sound were just the same as if we were in the house - very impressed. My daughter is a new Mom who is very concerned about her baby and the fact that we (the parents) have a very large house. Now with this baby monitor she is very comfortable coming here and putting him down and not worrying that she can't hear him crying or fussing anymore. That means the world to me. I'm not that mechanical or technical a person, but I had no trouble setting this up. I would highly recommend this unit. Oh, and about the lullabies, one reviewer thought they were 'creepy', but they are just old lullabies that I grew up with and I thought they were very gentle. The baby (7 months old) wasn't used to them as his Mom always sings to him, but, maybe, one day - he's still young yet). Trust me, listen to the bad reviews (which I unfortunately did not).

UPDATE: Eleni from Motorola Customer Service commented on the below review. I have read reviews where dealing with Customer Service via phone has been a huge pain, but I felt the process via email was pretty standard, and Eleni always responded to me within the day (sometimes within the hour). They asked a number of questions verifying the issue, I had to send the receipt and serial #, etc. I was happy with the Customer Service experience. If you do need to contact CS, I would recommend email over phone from what other reviews have said. They sent me a replacement unit quickly (I have the 2.8, it sounds like sometimes there is stock status issues with the 3.5?), and sent the replacement unit prior to me sending back the defective unit. However, they said the warranty on the replacement unit is only 90 days, vs 1 year for the original purchase. BEFORE there were power issues, I would rate this monitor 5 stars. So I'm just praying that the new units they ship out, knowing there is such an issue with the power port, has fixed the issue vs just sending out more of the same units with an obvious defect. Time will tell... I will update accordingly... Changing my review from 1 start to 3 star, but would still caution on this monitor in hopes there aren't power problems. I wish I would have listened to the poor reviews. Like any product on Amazon, you always have your 5 stars and then your miscellaneous "omg it's the worst product ever" 1 star reviews, even with items I like. There were... unfortunately... a lot more poor reviews than I normally would ignore. I knew someone else who got this monitor so let that trump the Amazon reviews (ironically, their monitor has since gone out as well). The battery life even when it was "working" is terrible. The screen would glitch out all the time. Now, 10 months in, the last 2 months the power port is broken as a million other reviews have stated. We tried to work around it and have to get the cord "just right" and pulled at an angle, and put something heavy on the cord in order to get it to charge. Now that hardly works. Also, when the blue light is on that it's "charging," half the time it's not even charging any longer, and holds zero charge. I've had the monitor die on me multiple times in the middle of the night recently as it continues to deteriorate. I've been sleeping terrible (my kid is not a good sleeper, still has acid reflux) waking in a panic to look at monitor only to find yes, it is indeed dead. There is a serious quality issue with the charging port, and I hope that Motorola listens to some of these reviews and takes it into account on future products. I'm not having to buy a whole new monitor, and these things aren't cheap.... Good times. ... show more

Good but too much ambient noise, low battery

Goodnfor the price, simple low tech. However, the monitor does not last long at all on battery and the mic picks up a lot of ambient noise.

A disappointment

I previously used (and still have) the model up from this one (remote pan and tilt, clearer picture, more sensitive audio). We had it for almost 4 years when the speaker went out, so purchased this one to still have audio. The first model we received the speaker was unreliable at best. It would cut in and out, and within a week got to where it would only work if the unit was placed facedown on the table. I'm guessing a wire short or something of the sort. So we did a product exchange hoping it was specific to that unit. The next one we got was slightly better, but still cuts in and out. The unit also emits a static sound that is incredibly annoying. We did not experience this with the more expensive motorola unit we had for so long. This isn't a range or connectivity issue (at least it's displaying a good connection and within strong range). Now, a month later, it will not hold a charge at all. The unit dies within 5 minutes of being off the cord and that is with the screen turned off. So that limits the mobility of the unit. Overall: less than great picture, very poor audio capability, unreliable speaker, poor battery life. I couldn't be more disappointed with this product. Spend a few more bucks and go with a better model or a different brand entirely. This one isn't worth even a small portion of what it costs. ... show more
