  • Another great Motorola phone at a reasonable cost. Bigger phone but great for aging eyes
Review for Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G 2022 8G RAM/256G storage: This purchase puts me on my fifth Motorola phone. Moved up from a 2020 Moto G Power (one of the best Moto phones ever made, IMO.) Needed a larger screen for calls, reading, and texting. Retains SD card and headphone jack capability. Longer battery life if the screen refresh rate is set to 60 vs 120. Videos at the higher rate are stunning. Very fast navigating and performance, no screen lag. Also Bought a Google Fi version of this phone through Google Fi (a $99 promo!! for international travel. The Fi version comes with only 4G RAM but is seems to run just as fast as my 8G RAM primary phone. Self-storing Stylus is useful as a way to avoid dirtying the screen, not so good for writing or drawing unless you have very steady hands. Wish this phone had dual-sim capability. Otherwise a great Moto phone at a great price when purchased on sale or through Google Fi promotions. This model is slated to receive upgrade to at least Android 13 and periodic security updates through 2025. ... show more

  • Affordable and great quality
Was very easy to set up and get working. It's unlocked and I am using it with straight talk. the camera is way better than my old one the battery lasts a super long time even with constant use and charges back up quick when dead. It also has smart charging to avoid overcharge ruining your battery life later. Only negative so far is I've been using the phone for a few days now and I've had to restart like 8 times for software updates. If you get this phone I recommend turning off the smart updates feature. But I got this phone for both me and my husband and we both love it. Update: husband's speaker stopped working 😅 ... show more

  • Camera Not Impressive
I would give this a 3.5 star if I could, but I thought a solid 3 was too low. I was in the market for a new phone, and I was looking for one with a NFC reader. But I wasn't about to buy a 800+ Dollar moto edge for them to take away features like the headphone jack and Micro SD card slot. But as far as I could tell, non of their newer phones had an NFC chip without giving up those other features. I was about ready to give up and try searching other brands until they dropped this little gem a few months ago. It costs significantly less than the edge+, and it has all the features I was looking for in a phone without any tradeoffs! (At least on paper) Before I get into my main issue with this phone however, I will say every other aspect of this phone seemed great. Stylus is solid metal as well, nice quality. That said... The camera really was not impressive for me. Honestly speaking, it kinds sucked when put up against my expectations... I currently own a 2017 Moto g7 Power (12MP Single Camera), and before that a Droid Turbo 2 (21MP Single Camera). I used to love my Turbo 2, the camera was awesome! I was sad to give it up due to the failing battery, but the g7 while noticeable drop in camera quality, had an awesome battery! (Honestly, battery matters more to me than camera anyways.) When I found the Stylus 5G and noticed it had the same battery size as my current phone, plus all these features, I was super excited. But once I got the phone, the picture quality on the claimed 50MP camera was no better than the 12MP on my current one.... I have 2 simple tests for this, take pictures of clouds, and take pictures of my pants. This tests both long distance and short distance image quality, and I judge it by how many details I can spot in the clouds, and how clear/easy it is to see the cloth pattern on my pants. Verdict: Barely any noticeable difference... Normally I wouldn't be this critical of a phone, but for me to be able to notice a significant difference between 12MP Cam and a good 21MP Cam, but for a 12MP and a 50MP to be almost equal?..... Sorry, but the claims don't match the results in my eyes. (Also tried multiple settings like Ultra Resolution and Pro mode, and even post editing. Didn't Help) I do have a theory for why this might be happening though. This phone has a quad Pixel Feature. Quick Photography lesson: Photo sensors with larger Pixels sensors can absorb more light, allowing for better Night shots. That's why a lot of newer cameras couldn't take good night shots while a lot of older cameras did better. As the tech got smaller and more detailed, it gave up being able to absorb more light for night shots. That said: Quad Pixel Mode is a feature where the small pixels on a camera combine in groups of 4 to mix data and behave as if they're one bigger pixel. (ergo: Quad Pixel) This allows for better shots in low light conditions. Long story short, I think the camera might be stuck in Quad Pixel Mode. 50MP / 4 = 12.5MP When you look at that math, it makes sense why the phones camera's have hardly any difference in quality. Problem is, I returned it for a replacement phone, and ran into the same issue... (That's two phones that had bad cameras) I really want to love this phone, but I got my hopes to high for a ALL the features. And I didn't really want to compromise when paying this much for a phone. So I returned the replacement. Hopefully this is just something software side that will be fixed later for other buyers. I did find another moto phone from last year that looks like it might fit my needs better. Even if the camera (108MP) is a quarter as good as it claims it will be better than this phone. And to top it off it's 200$ cheaper and has a bigger battery. ... show more

  • Great Phone Overall
I'm a fan of Motorola Phones. Had the Atrix 2 years ago, and Moto G7+ prior to this one. Really liked the Moto G7+ which I think had the perfect screen size at 6.2" but its camera was really bad indoors. So this review is mainly comparing it to the Moto G7+ which I'm using as the benchmark. The display on this phone is not as good overall as the Moto G7+ which had whiter whites, and much better viewing angles. This display is still very good, with super resolution, and good contrast, but it does have a slight red push, so the G7+ was tops IMO. Battery life is phenomenal on this phone, whereas the G7+ wasn't great and seemed to degrade over the span of 2 years, but the G7+ had a 27w charger and 3000ma battery and this one has only a 10w charger with a 5000ma battery so the speed to charge is night and day with the G7+ way better. That said, I can get easily 2 days of use on one charge to 80% with this phone, but I keep it in battery saving mode, and don't use it constantly. The included 10w charger is very slow. Takes about 3 hours from 1-100, and about 1.5 hours from 25% to 80%. This isn't as much of a big deal for me considering how frugal the phone is with battery consumption when in battery saver mode. To be honest, I keep the display at 60hz, and battery saver almost 100% of the time which helps with that. Battery saver does a number of things, but the main thing is it reduces the CPU mhz pretty dramatically. Even with battery saver on, the phone works about as well as the G7+ did with it off. So I have no really general purpose performance issues with battery saver on which is nice. Power button fingerprint sensor is better than I expected, prefer it over the one on the back of the G7+. I preferred Android 10 to Android 13 look and feel. Really dislike the fat brightness and volume sliders in Android 12/13's interface. Love the Motorola Gestures like twist to open camera, karate chop to open flashlight which carried over from the G7+. Wish the moto nav button on bottom from the android 10 was preserved from the G7+ which worked better for me than the Android 12/13 nav button which is similar enough. Stylus works pretty well, but its kind of a minor benefit IMO. Good for marking up images mostly. The audio quality is mediocre with only a single speaker. The sound was better on the G7+. Glad it has a 3.5mm headphone jack. Like the NFC and tap to google pay works well. Phone came with 256gb SD card which was a very nice bonus. After android updated from 12 to 13, I had to reinsert the card for it to be recognized again. Call quality is good, people hear me well and I hear them well. Wifi speeds are good. The cameras are an upgrade over the G7+ but that isn't saying much. Motorola really makes poor choices when it comes to camera image quality for some reason. I wish the camera took sharper, less compressed looking images and gave me more control over the image quality settings. Zooming into my landscape scenery images shows a lot of over-processing and general lack of detail. The compression and over-processing destroys fine detail in tree limbs and leaves. Overall, I really like this phone, but I do wish Moto updates the camera firmware/processing/features to improve overall image quality. I do like having the ultrawide camera lens for wide shots, though its color balance is different than the main 50mp camera. The cameras do a good job with HDR color though. My general takeaway is the G7+ was a higher end spec'd phone getting higher end components vs the Moto G Stylus 5G 2022, even despite the G Stylus 5G being a newer phone and costing me more, it seems to have slightly degraded display and audio quality and charger. Otherwise, its a better phone in mostly every other way except for battery charging speed and overall size. The phone is large and slippery and needs a case with a rubber feel IMO. I picked up an inexpensive gel tpu case on amazon and a tempered glass screen protector and its great now. Overall I'm happy with this phone. ... show more
