Decent set of knives. Has a lot of features I like and that any knife I use should have such as comfortable grip, sloped bolster, full tang, and good balance. They look nice, but a fancy design in and of itself won't cut food. I don't really need or generally recommend a finger guard like they included as I think they're clunky and get in the way. You're far better off learning proper knife and cutting skills, curling your fingers out of the way in a claw-grip and keeping the side of the blade snug up against your fingers. The included honing rod is decent enough. I prefer a longer one so I can hone blades in longer strokes. It's perfectly fine to use, especially if you're honing perpendicular to the steel, but I tend to kind of do diagonal strokes down the length so a longer one gives me a bit more room. They're sharpened fairly well and good to go straight out of the box, but the box design is a bit lacking. There's a dense red foam with cutouts for the knives built in, but still too much space between the top of the knives and the underside of the lid. The chef's knife in my set was found out of it's little spot and freely sliding around. Would have been easy for it to become damaged as a result but I got lucky and nothing was damaged. I highly suggest the maker add a layer of that foam to the underside of the lid, or a sheet laid on top of the knives so that nothing can pop out and slide around. This is a design issue not a shipping issue. I do have concerns with these kinds of knives as so much of their longevity relies on how well they're made. This kind of modern Damascus has a central core with 33 layers added to each side and usually welded together and the pattern comes out as the billet is worked, sometimes folded or twisted. This kind of pattern welding can indeed produce well-fused layers and a strong blade that looks gorgeous and takes an edge. Given the layered nature and the edge angle on this, I do recommend using a whetstone to sharpen. I personally don't recommend any of the kind of sharpeners where you drag the knife through a V-shaped piece. They tend to remove too much metal and if you've even the slightest imperfection or ding on the blade edge, it can catch and the damage can get much, much worse. All in all though these look pretty decent. Would make a good gift I think. I'll keep using them and if any other issues pop up, I'll revise the review and rating accordingly.

Knives are nice. It claims to be VG-10 steel but probably not true Japanese VG-10 but a Chinese knockoff using the same formula. Usually I can spot etched (i.e. fake) damascus pattern but these are either a very good fake or actual damascus steel. Either way these would make a great gift set with presentation box and all.

They don’t stay sharp long and they aren’t real thick so sharpening will wear them down faster.
