  • Shallow but usablr
The box was easy to mount and had reeds of various diameters. Unfortunately, the house is shorter or I guess more shallow than the Mason bee tubes I ordered that contained bees. I didn't realize the reeds were permanent. But I was able to remove some and shove my bee containing tubes in the house. If the bees return to rest and winterize, I can remove the bee tubes for sleeping in the fridge. It's a nice house overall. I like it better than the houses with wooden holes, some are too narrow for bees. This house had a variety of sizes, so if you can attract bees, it is great ... show more

  • Well built
Hasn't attracted any bees yet. Better built than others that I've purchased.

  • Cute, but not practical.
I’ve been raising Mason bees for a few years now and this setup doesn’t work. It’s very cute and made nice, but the tubes are way too hard and are glued to the back, which was misleading from the description. You have to pull the bee cocoons out before winter to examine them for parasites, etc. and then hibernate them in your garage or refrigerator. I had to crack these open with tools and that would have damaged the eggs. You need tubes that can break open fairly easily and can be replaced every season. ... show more

  • Nice bee house
Got this for future use, unfortunately here mason bee nesting season is over for the year, so I can't report on usage. Can say this appears to be good build quality, very study, weather resistant with water tight joints (maybe an improvement inspired by previous reviews), should hold up very well. Did notice the tube interior walls are not worked smooth, there is some white bamboo tissue left, this is fine for single use, the bees will happily work around it. My plan is to clean the tubes out with a small wire brush drill bit or clean (oil free) gun cleaning brush, then insert tube liners made from white printer paper, which can be replaced every year. Then place the house in a sheltered location a week or two before Spring next year, in mid fall move the house to a more sheltered location but still outside, in late winter return the house to its original location. The year after, once the bees have left but before new nesting really gets started, replace the paper tubes. I think the joints will need resealing with polyurethane after a couple years. With that, this house could last a decade, well worth the price to help our local bees. Also worth the price compared to the DIY solution of drilling that many holes in log (I don't have a drill press, yet). Tip, do not place multiple houses in the same location, they need to be spread out to avoid becoming a buffet for predators or hot spot for disease. Tip, if pesticides have wiped out your local bee populations but pesticide usage has ended locally, then you can transplant bees from nearby areas with healthy populations. Just find a friend in a nearby rural area with plenty of mason bees (native to your area), and good flower forage, to host an extra bee house (or several), then relocate it after the bees go dormant in the fall. Make sure you keep it outside (too much warmth may wake them up). Make sure you have good forage seeded/planted around their new home. Do not poach from areas with struggling bee populations (most urban, suburban, agricultural areas). If pesticides are a problem, consider working with your local agricultural extension office to raise a honey bee hive, then you can complain endlessly to anyone using pesticides that they are killing your bees - mason bees are wildlife (no one's property), but honeybees are livestock (your property) that others maybe damaging. Tip, bees need enough food to survive all season, that may seem obvious but many people have forage gaps in their landscapes without realizing it. When planning, mark the expected flowering date ranges out on a calendar, and add enough plants to fill any gaps so that nectar is reliably available from early spring to mid fall, something somewhere always needs to be in bloom. If space is limited, plan on replacing plants after flowering. Keep in mind many decorative flowers are not bee forage, its best to stick to native wild flowers. Hope that helps, thanks for reading, and thank you to Amazon for the free item to review. ... show more

  • Great Bee Box to Support Native Bees
This is my third Mason Bee Box. I have a 2-acre orchard farm in the mountains of Virginia, and the mason bees have been troopers in pollinating my orchard and garden. Supporting local bees is also such a great idea because honeybees are not native to the US, and they can displace other important pollinators. This house is well constructed with a polyurethane coating on the wood. I’ve mounted my box under the eave of my garage for added protection, where it faces the orchard and gets some morning sun. It’s too late in the season to attract bees to nest but having two other boxes that successfully attracted mason bees, I have no doubt that this will work as well as the others. I mounted it now in autumn instead of the spring, so that the polyurethane and glue smell can dissipate before nesting season, as I don’t want noxious fumes to deter the bees from taking up residence in the box. At only sixteen dollars, this is an amazing price, as to construct a box myself similar to this one would likely cost me around the same price, if not more. One nice attribute is that the bamboo tubes are of different diameters, which is important as the mason bees are picky about the size of the tube they select and having an array of sizes seems to get them to colonize a box more quickly. It’s also great that the tubes are bamboo and not cardboard, which will help them last and keep unwanted moisture out. This is definitely a wonderful native bee house which is as a great price and highly recommended. ... show more

  • This is a beneficial addition to gardens that’s easy to feel good about.
Hi. I am very pleased with every aspect of this bee house and I look forward to hanging it in my garden this coming spring. For a long time now I have lived in a New England “farming and fishing” coastal community in a house with a treed yard and flower gardens and decorative plantings throughout. My wife and I have long been “on board“ with incorporating plants that are beneficial for butterflies so adding this habitat for bees (and ladybugs) is both a great fit and an excellent idea. The bee house offers two mounting options (hanging or backside bracket). It measures approximately 8”x 8” (Width, “eave to eave”, x Height) and the wood is sealed throughout with wax. The house is nicely put together and looks like it should last. The twine used to hang the house is easily replaceable and a package containing (8) additional bamboo tubes is included. So, all the bases are covered … The takeaway: This well made bee hive is a beneficial support for the pollinators we all need and depend on. It is a genuine bargain for its asking price and can, will, make a welcome gift. ... show more
