I ordered this thinking that the design looked Persian. Persian and Oriental rugs have always been my favorite. This rug does have the typical Heriz center medallion, but its resemblance to Heriz pretty much ends there. Aside from the atypical color, purples and lavenders instead of brick reds and blues, the designers tried to fool the eye by running wide black lines across the design. I suppose the intent was an attempt to introduce some detail to a rug which is supposed to imitate a rug with hundreds of knots per square inch. As it is, it's simply rather bewildering, neither creating a geometric design nor creating smaller medallions in keeping with the larger one, which would have been typically Heriz, not at all aesthetically pleasing. The edges are bound, not fringed. If you're a lover of all things purple and you need a relatively soft and allergen free carpet (although it did need to be aired out when it first arrived) perhaps this rug could serve your purpose. I'm putting it under my dining room table; only the edges will stick out and it will save my floors. I will admit that I'm partial to purple but wasn't sure if a rug in that color would work in my eclectic home. My first concern was whether it would clash with my other rugs and decor in my library/music room. But much to my surprise and delight, this rug knocks it out of the park with it's purplelicious presence. It is not overwhelming at all. Rather, it's soothing and unobtrusive yet still makes an artistic statement with it's lovely design and luscious hues and pattern. It's fun, functional and feels good under the feet. It's good quality carpeting with a decent pile that's easy to maintain. It also stays put. There's no sliding around as this is a rather substantial piece. We have a sun room with pale lavender walls and slate tile floor, and we thought this would look good in the center. Also, we have three dogs and a cat that always want to lie right in the sun's path, so we figured the rug would be a better option than the lineup of dog beds we had in front of the 8-foot sliders. The rug is well made. The stitching is solid and the pile is fairly thick. It feels soft on my feet. The backing has a nice grip, so the rug doesn't slide all over the floor. The purples are lighter than I expected. Much of it is more of a lilac, with a pink undertone. There are some deeper purples interspersed. There are horizontal black stripes that appear more of a solid black in the image than they actually are. Consequently, the pattern feels a little chaotic to me. The color of the rug is a very soft purple (maybe it should be described as lilac) with a black scroll design. I put this in my library that has a black desk and shelving and it looks wonderful. I used a rug pad underneath although one might not be necessary. The rug puckered a bit on one side. I am hoping that it will flatten over time. It is not that noticeable. Overall, this is a difficult-to-find color in a rug that's soft on bare feet, tolerant of pets, and impervious to moths.
