I picked up a Minisforum barebone PC to use as my home lab, and it’s been an absolute powerhouse. I loaded it with two 1TB NVMe drives and 64GB of non-ECC RAM, all paired with the Ryzen 9 CPU it came with. For its size, this thing is a beast, plenty of muscle for running multiple VMs, containers, and services without breaking a sweat. That said, it’s definitely a tight fit inside. There’s a PCIe slot for a GPU, but realistically, not many cards will fit in there unless you’re getting creative chopping the case or going external. It also only has a single NIC, which is a bit of a letdown for a home lab setup, dual NICs would’ve opened up more network flexibility. And no built-in Wi-Fi, though there’s an M.2 slot if you really need to add it. Pro tip: I run Proxmox on it and it's super smooth. With community templates available on GitHub, spinning up VMs is fast and easy. For a compact home lab, this little machine hits way above its weight.

Had it for about a month now and use it with my UMC1820 for audio recording and mixing as well as application development. This thing is a beast for workstation purposes. I loaded it up with 1tb nvme and 96gb RAM and I can record 8 tracks (2 guitars, bass, edrums as midi controller, 3 mics) along with main stereo out and 3 stereo headphone mixes through Reaper (DAW) with each track using multiple fx without any clicks or pops. Previously was using a laptop that is still great for mobility and mixing, but this beast with 16cores/32threads can handle so much more without random pops or clicks. I use wired networks at my desk so the lack of wifi isn't an issue for me but may be for some. Similarly I use wired headphones and speakers/monitors so lack of Bluetooth also doesn't impact me but may for some. I could see lack of BT being an issue for some people but USB dongles are fairly cheap - same for wifi if necessary. I have it off the floor but under my desk so I don't notice it being noisy. I can say that under load the fans would be noisy for me if it were on my desktop as I have checked on it. I imagine if it also had a discrete gpu it would be a lot warmer and louder. I have debated about adding one but I simply don't need it for my use case. This is small enough to be portable for me (fits into a backpack with all necessary cables but i don'tsee myself needingto do this) and powerful enough that it excels at the workloads I throw at it. I gave 4 vs 5 for the lack of wifi and Bluetooth as it's 2025 and it's just silly to not include these today. Otherwise, this is a great barebones PC in a small desktop format (I think it's the same size or smaller than my Xbox S). You COULD build a more performant normal ATX system for the same price which is something to consider. I liked the small(er) form factor which I can easily transition to an entry level gaming pc for my pre-teen if they take an interest in e-sports.

Hello, Since December (now March) I used this system as a NAS head. For a while I used the Yottamaster PS500C3 but found it was insufficient for my needs and consequently purchased a QNAP TL-D800C instead with immediate increase in throughput that the system was able to handle. I am running Linux, you may get a SMART error on reboot, but apparently this is very common. Still, I thought the worst initially, and the support team paid me to purchase another NVME. Wow. Seriously. I've never been so treated in over 25 years of buying computers. I did, eventually, find that the Kensington NVME on-board was doing fine and there is no need to worry. I run Linux and the 2.5 Gbps Ethernet controller mostly. Therefore I could purchase a PCI-E E-key to M-key adapter and put the second NVME in on the significantly faster PCIE bus - it also only cost about 20 dollars. I have some things to do but the second NVME is being used as an OpenZFS write cache with very good speeds. Next, this PC supports (apparently) up to 64 GB of RAM. OpenZFS loves caching files too, so the more RAM the better. Finally, though I need to contact support about it, there is an additional riser for an additional SATA drive if I wanted to do something like that. At the price, for a home server, this thing just can't be beat if you're going to be serious about it. I can get USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds on mechanical disks, I can repurpose the unnecessary "wifi" card slot for something I want, I can even add a 2.5" SATA drive to it. Overall 100% recommend purchase for this kind of task. And it's fast. And I also serve Plex and other things up from it. Doesn't bat an eyelash anymore. A+ Good Job Minisforum! -b
