  • Don’t buy a toy sewing machine.
$82. For a toy that doesn’t have the power to sew through the thinnest of corduroy. I pinned the cuff up and tried to shorten the inseam and it broke the teeny weany needle when it hit the needle (: don’t waste your money.

  • Good Beginner Machine For Small Sewing Projects
This compact sewing machine is easy to set up, simple to thread, and small enough to store without taking up much space. The 14 stitch settings and 2 speed options give it enough versatility for basic repairs, hemming, crafts, and other light sewing projects. The white design has a clean appearance, and the built in handle makes it easy to move or store. The foot pedal works well, and the included thread, bobbins, needles, scissors, measuring tape, and seam ripper provide everything needed to start sewing. Stitch quality is clean on lighter fabrics, but this is not a heavy duty machine and thicker material or too many layers can cause jamming. One drawback is that there is no separate power switch, so the machine needs to be unplugged when finished. The lightweight design and simple controls make it a good value for the money for beginners or occasional home use. ... show more

  • Not a beginner’s sewing machine.
This Verdanika sewing machine is a mini sewing machine and is not for beginners. The machine is very lightweight and is not strong enough to actually sew anything thicker than two ply cotton fabric. I have always loved sewing ever since I was a child and took sewing lessons. I wanted to like this machine, but I just don’t. This machine actually scares me frankly as there is no true off switch. I started this review by saying this is not a beginners machine because it doesn’t behave like any other machine I have ever encountered. I have never in the past encountered a sewing machine that didn’t have an off and on switch. Be very careful with this machine. When the power cord is connected, and you see a light, the machine is on. I had assumed that the “o” meant on, and I or II was on. Bad assumption. The switch must be in the “o” setting, the “I” and “II” will put the machine into continuous sewing mode, of 1 being slow, and II being fast. If you happen to turn the machine to “I”, it will run even when the foot pedal is connected. I own several sewing machines with the continuous sewing option, but they all become disabled if the foot pedal is connected. That is a very dangerous feature and one that I think should be fixed in any upgrade to this machine. For a machine that is geared to novice sewers, the continuous on sewing is dangerous and really isn’t necessary plus all of the fancy stitches would just frustrate a sewer as the machine is not capable of sewing through thick layers of fabric. I don’t think much of this machine and I would recommend you invest a little more money ... show more

  • A genuinely capable little machine that earns its place in the travel bag
My wife has been sewing costumes for our daughter's dance competitions for years, which means she's constantly dealing with delicate fabrics, last-minute repairs, and the very real challenge of being in a hotel room the night before a performance with a seam that needs fixing. Finding a portable machine that could actually handle that kind of pressure — not just light hemming, but real costume work — took a while. The Verdanika has been the answer. The stitch variety is the first thing that impressed her. Fourteen stitches sounds like a marketing number until you're actually switching between a blind hem on a costume skirt and a zigzag on stretch fabric in the same session. The dual-speed control is genuinely useful too — she drops to low speed for anything sheer or delicate and bumps it up when working through thicker layers or multiple panels. The metal internal frame makes a difference you can feel; there's no wobble or skipping even when pushing through heavier material. Setup is fast, the color-coded threading actually works, and the foot pedal gives her the control she's used to. At 4.4 pounds with a built-in handle, it goes in the bag without a second thought. What stands out most is that it doesn't feel like a compromise. A lot of portable machines are fine for simple mending but fall apart when you ask more of them. This one handles the full range — competition costumes, quick repairs on the road, craft projects at home. The included kit is comprehensive enough that she's not scrambling for accessories, and the 10-foot cord gives flexibility in whatever space she's working in. It's become the machine she reaches for whether she's home or away. ... show more

  • Good for beginners or brushing up on skills. Love the loaded bobbins and extra sewing supplies.
I ordered this Mini Sewing Machine, Dual Speed Double Needle, 14 Stitch Portable Sewing Machine for Beginners, Adults, Home Use because I wanted to get back to sewing; it’s been a few years, and I thought this mini sewing machine would be a great starting place for refreshing myself with basic skills and simple projects. This sewing machine came with a bunch of basic supplies that were great for a beginner or refresher, like 16 colors of thread, both spooled and pre wound on bobbins, a seam ripper, measuring tape, needles, and more. I love the convenience of the pre threaded bobbins; it makes it faster to get started. This sewing machine has a foot pedal; when the light is lit, it’s good to go, but there’s no way to turn it off without unplugging. It’s been a fair few years since I used a machine, and I had to keep reminding myself it’s always on when plugged in. There are two levels of speed, I and II; it took me a bit of time to work back up to the II or high speed, and absolute beginners may also want to take this slowly. I found this fairly decent in terms of noise; of course you can hear it, but it’s not outrageously clattery. The machine has 14 different stitches; I found it ideal for refreshing myself on basic sewing skills, and have had fun making some simple cotton pjs for summer. I haven’t tried any stretchy fabrics yet, but this works well on woven fabrics. At the current price ($99.98) this is in line with prices I’ve seen on basic machines, and it delivers good value for beginners and basic sewing needs. This is probably a bit basic for experienced sewers, but it’s ideal for beginners, and it wasn’t too complex for me when reviewing skills that had gotten a bit rusty with time. I like the smaller size a lot; I live in a tiny house in NYC without tons of storage space, so the “mini” size works great. ... show more
