I bought this chain hoist to lift my outboard motor on and off my small boat. It’s a 9.9hp, so not super heavy— around 130 pounds or so. I mounted the hoist to the ceiling of the garage into a stud, so very sturdy. The design of the hoist requires I go up on a ladder to use it, and it jams from time to time when flipping the lever to change directions. Other than that, it seems strong and has no trouble lifting the engine. Loses one star for the design and the occasional jamming.

So I got this to lift a 500# wood stove into place, and I nearly went with the 3/4T version but this one is more compact and comes with a 'handsome' carrying case, so the decision was easy. My only concern was the short length of the handle, and would it provide enough leverage? Immediately I took it to the garage and proceeded to lift the stove with no issues whatsoever. I suppose when I want to lift something closer to the capacity of the hoist it will be a little more difficult, but for the foreseeable future this should handle anything I need. It is a little unnerving looking at those small chain links under load, but it IS rated for 1100#

Others sell for hundreds of dollars more than this but I only need it for occasional use....if I had a commercial shop I would opt for a more expensive brand. It functions OK but seems a bit Jammy at times, the chain sometimes gets stuck and will not run smoothly through the mechanism but with some jostling and fiddling it comes lose.... It may be the nature of chain hoists to act this way, My main reason for getting this small 1/4 ton hoist was to use repairing frost free hydrants without having to dig them up....Frost free hydrants are likely to break at the fitting below ground if you use 2 pipe wrenches without this tool....it's very difficult with one or two people with wrenches not to rotate the down-pipe and break the fittings.....You can eliminate this problem by connecting the ends of the 2 pipe wrenches with this hoist and a clevis in the handle hanger opening.....for even more room put short breaker extension pipes on the wrench handles and put the hoist hooks in the ends of the pipes......this absolutely eliminates any rotation of the hydrant down-pipe.
