We used a 19in pan, painted it with high heat paint, and then used 20lbs of lava rock to fill pan to this effect. The rocks were a variety of sizes, I definitely would not want to go smaller, and 2 bags filled the pan in nicely. Yes, there is some dust and small bits, but it is lava rock and will naturally break up somewhat in processing. After the fire is off, rocks still stayed warm for a bit afterwards. (Enough to still roast marshmallows haha!) Worked very well for us overall! ... show more

We put them sround the logs in our back up heat gas fireplace. They give the hot coals affect. Shame this clean heat source is being banned in some places. Our electric is not to reliabe, expensive and cold.
