I bought my first Midea U-shaped (a 12k BTU) around 3 years ago. It was whisper quiet, super cold air flow, and didn't cycle on an off constantly. I also noticed that it used a fraction of the power of my other, larger, heavier, traditional window units. The very next season, I bought another Midea (a 10k BTU) for the bedroom and have been super happy. When I decided to buy a third to replace the old noisy unit in my office, I discovered there had been a recall on these, and they became temporarily unavailable while Midea fixed the issue. There was an option to get a full refund on both of my existing units, or alternatively, get a drain kit fitted to solve the potential issue. I didn't hesitate in keeping the units and opting for the fix. There's no way I was heading into the summer without these things. The thought of lugging my older units up from the basement had my back aching, with visions of an increasing electricity bill too. Luckily, within a few weeks, the updated Midea units were back on the shelves and I had no hesitation in buying a third one. This slightly newer model has some extra features beyond the originals but all can be controlled via the app, a supplied RC or on the front panel of the unit itself. Once you've initially fitted a Midea unit, which requires a little bit of crafting to tailor the insulation pieces to your window frame, subsequent removal and reinstallation is quick and easy, especially as they are comparatively small and lightweight given their cooling capacity. For the price, they easily beat the competition and it would take a lot of convincing to get me to switch brands, hence why I stuck with them through the recall. On top of that, I can see the energy savings through my electricity monitoring setup.

"This Midea window AC is amazing! Super easy to install yourself—the modular design snaps together like building blocks, no drilling or messy setup. As a first-timer, I got it done solo in 15 minutes. It runs quieter than a library (just 23dB!), breezing cool air all night like natural wind. The smart features are genius: I love being able to turn it on remotely from my phone 10 minutes before leaving work, so my place is perfectly cool by the time I get home. The upgraded drainage system in the latest model works flawlessly with zero leaks. Customer service is top-notch too—quick replies and expert fixes. A must-have for renters and small spaces... it totally transforms daily comfort!"

Very noisy, when the compressor kicks in, the vibration makes your wall vibrate. 90% of the time, it only blows cool air, not cold. I have a house built in the 90s, and I had to spend hours stuffing foam in all the areas that were still open to the outside. I assume their window kit is for newer windows. Do not put it in a room where you want to hear your TV.

This is NOT the recalled item, or rather it kind of is but with a different plug. The problem with the original version was that they wanted you to use a plug that completely blocked water drainage. This is because it was designed for the fan to splash water on the condenser coils for improved efficiency. Of course what happened was that mold would build up inside the unit. So Midea issued a recall with a choice to either get your money back or just to have them send you a different plug with essentially a small hole in it. The units being sold now are basically the original units but with the new plug. I might note that I read all about the water/mold problem when I bought my first Midea u-shaped and the obvious solution is to use NO plug at all which is what I did and it doesn't affect performance at all and there is zero mold. I had a 8k BTU unit and a 12K BTU unit. They are the best thing since sliced bread and I love everything about them -- energy efficient, quiet, super cold, the fact that the inverter keeps the loud "on/off" sound thing from happening all night, the way they let the light in through the window, etc. That said, when I turned on the 12k BTU unit this summer, after one season of use, it displayed an error code indicating loss of refrigerant, meaning basically that somewhere a pinhole leak had allowed all the refrigerant to drain out. So it is a giant paperweight now. BUT, I submitted the serial number via the recall process and now they are going to refund all my money not because it doesn't work (it's past the warranty period) but because of the mold issues, notwithstanding it has no mold. :)

After the recall of the previous version, we looked at buying other units by Midea, but we're relieved when they released a new U shaped unit. They are SO quiet compared to all other units, we knew we needed to buy another one of these. They are really easy to set up and place in the window. I appreciate that they tell you how to install in different window types and it comes with foam. The wifi is really easy to set up and connect to the app and Alexa. We have 2 of these units in our house and they are essential. You can turn off the lights so it's perfect for the bedroom and you can turn off the beeping when pressing buttons. The remote is nice too. I really feel like I get my monies worth with these units. Before the recall of the older ones, ours was still in great working order 5 years later.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: We chose this air-conditioner for its quality and design for quietness. We installed it in a basement window, removing two horizontal-sliding window panes and built a frame to suit. The unit is working beautifully and the typically highly humid basement during rainy summers is now at a comfortable level - no more water dripping from the ceilings! On blazing hot days, my husband likes to cool the basement area, where he has his office and the only tv in the house. The unit has worked like a charm. The remote works. It is very quiet. We highly recommend Medea air-conditioners.
